Should Star Trek just give up?

Never give up, never surrender !
A line from the greatest Star Trek fim ever made.....
That's what I like to hear....

* Let's have more of that kinda thinking around here *

I see many of the problems with Enterprise could plague this movie.

ENT's problems were Berman and UPN. Neither will have anything to do with Trek XI (thank GOD!)

not one person I know in real life supports this movie.

Few people I know in real life are aware of this movie or will be aware of it till the advertising, reviews and word of mouth hit a couple months in advance (at the most). At that time they will decide whether it's a movie worth seeing. Star Trek or no Star Trek, it has to appeal to people as an entertainment experience. That, and not the Trek name or the characters, will make or break it.

...the one person I mentioned it to, hardly a Trek fan, thought the idea of recasting Kirk and Spock was "cool." I haven't mentioned it since. I don't know anyone in RL who would be interested in this topic so far in advance of the final product. If Trek XI turns out good, I'll probably drag him to see it. :D

Are you sure, as I was thinking it came from some stupid SCI-FI space movie. It had some woman with her boobs almost going to pop out of her shirt. It had some other stupid characters. It was strange, made from a cheap TV space show and some aliens was thinking it was true and made the ship. Funny to watch, but you have to be really drunk or really stoned to watch it more then once :)

I think...you're referring to "Galaxy Quest" with ALIEN veteren Sigourney Weaver, Tim Allen, & Hogwarts' own Professor Snape a.k.a. Actor Alan Rickman.

I think this would be about the best time to try Trek again. I mean we're in about the same place as we were in the 1960's.

We're afraid of nukes, mostly terrorists getting nukes.
Iraq seems like Vietnam but with a heck of a lot more sand.
people think the world's going to end

Absolutely nothing like the effing 1960's is it? So we listen to Green Day instead of the Beatles, and we have cell phones and iPods. Honestly, the 2000's so far seem like 1960's part two. So if you're going to revive something from the 1960's, I think now is probably about the right time.

Besides I'd like something optimistic, I'm kinda tired of the whole "we're doomed" thing.

Star Trek shouldn't just give up, no.

But the way it's being brought back to us shouldn't happen either. Nemesis' ending left me hanging. I want more TNG, and I feel like, after having put so much of myself into it for the good majority of my life, I deserve it. And so does everyone else. I like Kirk, as do most of us here, but what we're going to get in Trek XI isn't going to be Captain Kirk in any way at all except by name.

Okay so you guys will be staying home on opening day. Great! That way maybe I'll have a better shot at getting a seat in the theater.

Instead of thinking what you deserve you should be thinking about what is best to revive a dead franchise. And another TNG centered film is not going to do it. Krk and Spock are iconic characters and that will interest people more than another film with that bald captain and that robot dude.

the tng crew is split up and it was getting harder and harder to even get worf involved.
so i am fine with no tng movie though some day i could see a movie set about 10 years in the future to see how things are evolving.

i am fine with this movie being made.
as a fan of sherlock holmes i am used to different people playing an iconic character.

i dont see someone else playing kirk diminishing what shatner did either.

and most of the people i know in real life who would care about a trek film enough to see it are more curious then anything.

only a few are of the i wont see it because i dont want the characters recast.

I agree with you brandnewfan.

Which is the truth - not all these conflated arguments that only have a veneer of logic to them. You're just mad this isn't 24th Century Trek and are stomping your foot about.

Did America give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor???

HELL NO!!

Seriously, I have talked to some friends who are casual Trek fans, and they are excited about it, using the original characters. One guy I knew who used to be a huge fan, but had become disheartened, I told him "It's just called 'Star Trek'. He pumped his fists and said "YES!"

I think this project has the possibility of drawing in new folks, drawing back old folks, and getting some excitement around Star Trek again. I just don't get the stench of lame from this project. I could be wrong, but I rarely am.

At least not in the last five minutes.

Of course we didn't give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. They never did. That was the Japanese(/history).

Anyway, I don't see why there's any reason to give up. It needs a bit of work, but it's still sound enough. What needs to happen is for the writers to take it seriously. They need to get into the mindset of selling it and making it good, rather than playing it safe.

Safe Trek is like the Cubs -- they're not going anywhere, so if you aren't already a Cubs fan, there's nothing to convert you. Most people who aren't fans of a team already would rather watch a team going to the playoffs or the series. Of course if you are already a Cubs fan, nothing will change your mind. So if the cubs want to be the most popular team, they need to play better baseball.

Trek will win fans by being a good show. And if that doesn't work, maybe they can run around paramount with a goat like the cubs did a few years back.

That's an Animal House reference, John Belushi's character is trying to rally his friends, and the line after that is "Germans?" "Forget about it he's rolling..."

Anyway, i guess I shouldn't assume everyone has seen the same movies as I have.

My girlfriend is actually slightly interested in the new Trek film. :D

Girls love old Trek... There's a point with women where "Shore Leave" Shatner is damn sexy... Spock was always the sexy one. Maybe it's the cheekbones, I don't know.

People still love the "old" Trek... they can go to that movie and feel comfortable in what they will get... it's Americana, the movie will just have new actors. I'm sure the gf will be happy if they look pretty, like Shatner with a torn shirt.

^ TOS is like Comfort Food ^
Like Mac & Cheese
Like Sketti & Meatballs

Right, that too. I assure you, that quote was funny and in person everyone would have laughed and laughed at my hilarious delivery.

Not so much with the typing.
