Should season 2 have a new title sequence?

The series is an exercise in what is, at its most successful, mediocrity: the visual design is drab and derivative, many of the effects are poorly designed (the space stuff), and the quality of the writing is generally directionless, arbitrary, superficial and often amateurish. It's neither sophisticated nor smart storytelling. Given the resources and time put into the show, you'd reasonably expect something about it to be really remarkable and first-rate as compared to other similarly ambitious productions on television.

So, it really is difficult to imagine how letting some new creative people or taking a new creative direction couldn't improve it. It's not like CBS can't afford the very best, for what they're spending.
Y'know, I'd really like to read a thread about DSC without you spewing your hate. WE KNOW YOU HATE THE SHOW. WE GET IT.

To be critical of something doesn't mean you hate it. As long as the criticism is even-handed, it means you expect better. And @Serveaux's criticisms have been, on the whole, even-handed. DISCO's writing is a slipshod mess that smacks of story elements being randomly plucked from a fanboi grab bag. The external ship effects were murky, poorly executed, and at times exhibited a total lack of understanding even the most basic principles of physics. Character development ran the gamut from nearly nonexistent to utterly schizophrenic, sometimes in the space of a single episode. Storytelling relied far too heavily on twists that were too clever by half and often completely preposterous. These are the reasons I quit watching altogether at the mid-season break.

I expected more from Discovery. It didn't deliver. Simple as that. If that makes me a "hater", I'll make a note to lose some sleep over it one day real soon, pinky swear. If this means I'm exiled from the DISCO glee club, I'm good with it.

Now I don’t hate the current DISCO title sequence, but then I came across this fan made trailer and I genuinely prefer it.

Would DISCO benefit from a more traditional title sequence?

What kind of title sequence would you like to see?

Do we even need a title sequence?

Yes, the show needs a new title sequence, including more memorable music.

I think eschaton, lawman, Refuge, ITDUDE, Jadeb, and yourself -- to name some of several here (I can only list so many names!) -- do a much more effective job of showing even-handed criticism. I don't see anyone complaining about them, or you. On a related note, BillJ and I couldn't possibly have opinions that are further apart about Discovery, but I don't have a problem with him either.

And the Hell with the show, I think all of you are great. The forum wouldn't be the same without you.

While @Serveaux's opinions have been blunt at times, I have yet to find them unfair.

DISCO is a show that stands to benefit after having its heads chopped off. We'll see what happens. Getting back to the topic, junk the first season opening and come up with something that isn't a televised sleeping pill.

I agree about getting back on topic.

I like that they went for a symphony for the intro. The mycelial network itself is probably a symphony if you navigate it right.

I don't hate the show. Generally speaking, I don't hate entertainment. It's trivial. For example, I hate the way the people who are running my country are running my country.

I just think it's a really, really bad show.

Just once I'd like to come in to a STD topic and not find people praising it excessively and uncritically - always the same people, no matter how bad it gets.

I don't expect to get what I want. Why do you?

This is a thread asking whether the title sequence should be redone, which by its very nature is asking for praise or criticism.

If someone's frequent or outspoken criticism of the show rubs anyone the wrong way, then there is an immediate solution to that problem: putting the poster on ignore.

Yelling at them, making personal remarks about them, or derailing the thread for two pages (this is directed at everyone, not just you, Grumpy) is not the right way to handle it, however.

I get that certain people can be frustrating at times, but maybe we also shouldn't take this so seriously that we get this upset over someone criticizing a show we like.

His criticisms have been leveled strictly at the quality of the show itself and have mostly been comprehensive. It might be annoying to some, but it is not against the rules. You all are just going to have to learn to accept it or ignore it, whether by yourselves or by more technical means.

I really enjoyed Season 1's title sequence. I think the Da Vinci schematics nod in the visual design is cool. But I do agree that the reverse colours would make it pop even more. Especially giving it a blueprint feel and showing the star fields more. Changing up the images to fit the season sounds good.

I love the music, though. I can't explain why. It's just very epic and memorable to me. My whole household would sing/hum along with the most melodramatic parts, almost as if we were in a Casselian or Klingon opera. :P

So, no thanks on that new title sequence above. It's too old school and boring with all the extended ship porn (in my opinion, but I have never watched Trek for the ships, whereas I understand that for others, it's a big part of the appeal). The music is much less distinct and interesting to me, too.

I'm genuinely sorry that you feel you're in the minority, but your OPINION of the show is yours, and is not shared by most people. Reviews, results, and even the weekly polls here show that there are a great number of people who don't believe it is a "really really bad show". Continuing to behave like everyone else is blind and you are the only one who sees the real, unfiltered truth is not only counter-productive, it comes off (unintentionally I'm sure) as arrogant and as a purposeful attempt to irritate.

If you are acting out of some misguided belief that you have some sort of responsibility to counterbalance the positivity with your own comments, as the hero bringing truth to the drooling masses, hoping that readers will suddenly look at what you are writing and be swayed to the correct way of thinking, I find that odd.

It begs the age-old, admittedly frowned-upon question: why would you feel it necessary or even desirable to frequent a message board discussing what you consider to be "a really really bad show," filled with people who annoy you because of their "excessive and uncritical praise?" Why would you even watch such a show, let alone show up to discuss it (from a frustrating minority opinion standpoint no less)?

This doesn't strike me as a productive or enjoyable use of anyone's free time.

Just trying to seek understanding...not trying to incite a war or encourage you to stop.

I apologize if my comments were off base. You're right, I can be overly sensitive.
Not really meant as anything more than a primal scream.
@Serveaux, I apologize for taking it out on you.
I'll play nicer from now on :)

Where's the fun in that?
Personally, I'd rather you live up to your avatar name.
Anybody whose been around here long enough, has probably developed a thick enough skin to brush off any snark and move on with their daily lives.

If not, then they soon will either implode in a messy fit of acrimony and indignation with an immediate Mod Warning/Ban and/or politely throw down back at ya.

Either way, at the very least, it keeps things interesting around here.

(I just realized that I've been hanging around these forums for almost 20 years !!!)

But I'm Capt Grumpy, dammit! not Capt Rude

Hmmm, on reflection, that was kind of a Grumpy response.
You're right. To quote another of my favorite characters, I yam what I yam!

this was posted last year somewhere. I just think it looks really good.
Gotta say, as much as I like the opening credits as they were done, I really like the inverted version. It makes everything pop and the drawings look more like blueprints.
