Should Picard have had a bit more of a "French personality"?

Picard doesn't have to be "more French".

Maybe he should have been a bit less British though. This was clearly the case of the actor's nationality overshadowing the character's nationality. Maybe they should have acknowledged this by giving Picard a half-French/half-British background. ;)
I think they should have done either that or made him completely British after casting Stewart.

Did Napoleon surrender? He nearly conquered the world and had the Brits pissing themselves

Might want to change some words...He failed and the Brits kicked his ass, so if your Idol for French standards is a guy who wanted to rule the world you need help.

As for the op question I say no because lets face it and this threads shows it, the French are not the most popular people and you want to add viewers not put them off. It was a American show so USA/Brits are the best way to go for MAIN characters if you want people that the audience can relate too. However I would of liked to seen a Earth arc because the one episode with his family was great.

It's probably just as well the Captain wasn't "Frenched up".
It would have just led to more of this...

Which, don't get me wrong...IS quite funny:)

He certainly should have been drunk more often. On screen and off screen.
Yeah, because French are notorious binge drinkers.

For the record, my comment was not designed to cause insult to the French people. It was an attempt at non sequitur humor. You'll find the bulk of my posts are like this. That may make them less relevant than other people's posts... but it's basically a crap shoot. But it certainly was not intended to cause unrest and I apologize if it did so.

Anyhoo, atle's image produces a fine example of stereotypes-gone-gaga. Plus, think about how difficult it would be to endure Picard as a character if Patrick Stewart had chosen to adopt a French accent in his portrayal/performance. It might have been too distracting... heck, I wonder if they didn't try some lines like that for Encounter at Farpoint?

Commenting on this very topic yesterday at a Trek Con in Sydney, Stewart said that he was originally asked to and did perform Picard with a French accent and that the result was "not entirely successful." He said that "I actually sounded like Peter Sellers" (as Inspecter Clouseau).

He then gave us a French accented "Make it So" which pretty much proved his point.

Stewart said that his stock answer to the question why Picard speaks sans French accent is "because he's clever. Picard speaks seven or eight languages after all and he does so accentless. Some people do."
According to Stewart, the film still exists somehwere in Paramount's vault, along with a few scenes of him as Picard with toupee.

If this thread wasn't dead or dying before...
it is now.

...a mime is a terrible thing to waste.

It would be interesting if he cursed in French when something went wrong or a ship shoots at the Enterprise. He accidently gives orders in French to Data.

As pointed out earlier in the thread, Picard does use the French curse 'merde' in two episodes, The Last Outpost and Elementary, Dear Data. :)

Warmest Wishes,
Whoa Nellie

It's the same joke, every time. The French surrendered. That's news. Did Napoleon surrender? He nearly conquered the world and had the Brits pissing themselves and the Americans I doubt he ever needed consider beyond to sell them land he would have conquered later. France has had its day NEUMANN COMMENT: (EHM yes the 18th century not the 19th)...
as Britain had its and we Americans are having ours. Wonderful. Lets pat ourselves on the back and fall like they did.

Aha! Yes but Napoleon Bonaparte was really named Buonaparte and he was a corsican whose parents were more italian than anythin else and besides he never dominated the french language as expected. So yes the FRENCH conquered a lot with their ITALIAN general. Not to surprise us as the romans when fighting the gaul made the same jokes as americans regarding the french willingness to fight.

Greetings from comunist venezuela btw

Hola papi, Napoleon spoke horrible french with a thick heavy coriscan accent. Its Coriscan not Italian, you wouldn't want to insult the Italians nor the Coriscans.
