should oral sex be depicted in star trek: discovery? hear me out

Does everything have to spin down to the lowest common denominator around here? I don't like having all topics reduced to 'everything is just ok because it's intellectually justified... because - progress'. I get it, there are no sacred cows any longer, but in the process I think we lose something special. I still want Star Trek to be special on some level. Jizzing on someone's face isn't where I want the series to go.

WTF

I would say that portraying sex or oral sex doesn't have to be "jizzing on someone's face"

I can think of examples of tv or film where the sexual relationship was the story, and of course it's depictions were very germane to what's going on.

There is a film called "The War Zone". It was a film about a boy who winds up stumbling upon and learning of his sister's sexual relationship with their father. The depictions of sex in the film albeit incredibly difficult to watch was effective and important as to the impact it was having on her. I don't recommend watching it if you have sensitive sensibilities, I do and I wasn't prepared and it was difficult not only to watch but impossible to forget in all the wrong ways.

There are other films where a more positive sexual relationship is the story and depictions of it are tasteful and part of the story and wind up being fairly straightforward in their depiction of sex.

So I for one am not against the idea of sex in film or tv and don't view that in and of itself as a bad thing. However I am at a complete loss to imagine where sexual relationship would make a decent story for a trek episode in any way, let alone in a fashion where it's depiction would be part of or add to the story.

See, this is where you and I differ. You are pigeonholed on what you think Trek really is. I see that Gene's vision was to be intellectually curious and keep on progressing.

I was specifically replying to @RobertCardassian with the Jizz remark - which was his to begin with. All in all we're in agreement - my objection is not to all film / tv avoiding sex (or sex acts) as part or all of the story. My objection is in the context of this discussion - specifically sexually explicit acts like "oral" depicted in Star Trek.

I know, I was just trying to switch gears from jizz to something more discussable

;)

Simulated semen shots seem all the rage on cable TV shows nowadays... how do we feel about Burnham or Stamets getting jizzed up on the face?
We get it, you don't like that this topic is still open. But deliberately using crass, lowest common denominator language, and in two other cases images and crude PMs to try and provoke a thread closure is the wrong way to express your disagreement. You were already warned not to do this three times now. Is this thread really the hill you want to die on?

Infraction for posting crude comments in order to provoke a thread closure (your second warning for that). Comments to PM.

I suggest you either take a break from visiting this thread if its very existence offends your sensibilities so much, or you can try and discuss it like a mature adult. Heck, you can even make jokes about it, so long as you know your limitations and don't cross the line like this again. But your antics are having the opposite effect from what you intended, in terms of trying to get this thread closed down.

Star Trek likes pushing boundaries like women in authority, minorities in authority, homosexuality. But what boundary is being pushed by allowing oral sex in the series? People are already ok with oral sex but just don't need to see it on TV since its a private thing. Is it pushing for less TV censorship boundary or what? X-Rated shows and shows with nudity already exist

Yeah, asking for oral sex in particular is oddly specific. I'm giving the OP the benefit of the doubt and assume it's because it's a bit easier to depict with one character moving out of frame and the camera just showing the reveiving partner. Technically all you need is one actor making *oooohh* and you have a sex scene with not really showing anything.

What you’re describing here fits exactly the 1933 film Ecstasy starring Hedy Lamarr. Ecstasy was highly controversial in its time (I repeat that’s 1933!) because it is the first non-pornographic movie to portray female orgasm, although never showing more than the actress’ face. The particular clip (so tame by today’s standards) is available in YouTube.

I'm not sure if this was the OP's intent but maybe "oral sex" is just a methpor for non-traditional sex or romantic type of situations. Ever romance in Trek has been very vanilla and just because we now will get to see the first gay couple you suspect it will also be treated in a very safe and vanilla kind of way. The only sex is the plain old missionary style. What is wrong in showing that people are sometimes into kinky stuff or even into stuff like domantrix style stuff or just casual sex. Every romance doesn't have to be about people falling deeply in love or wanting to become the 24th century version of the "Leave it to Beaver" family.

Because it's Star Trek. You want kinky or dom stuff, there's other avenues.
