Should Kurtzman move on after the Khan series?

This isn't a knock on him or his job. Some people love him and some don't. I was thinking of this just as much from the perspective of people who love what he has done in Trek. They way I see it is when it's all over he will have had a hand in starting Discovery,Picard show,Section 31,cartoon,Khan and also writing some of the Kelvin Universe movies. Isn't that enough?

I was thinking about how Berman stayed to long as did Braga to a lesser degree. At some point doesn't make sense to think is more than enough of a contribution from him and you don't want him ov er staying his welcome like Berman did. I which point you think you would want someone new to come in with a fresh perspective. If you count "Star Trek" that means he has been apart of this new Trek for 10 years and it will be even longer by the time these shows and these future shows end. That is along time. I think it's safe to say that he has done his bit for King and Country and it would be fine to let someone take over this enterprise.

As long as he hands some shows over to other people and trusts them to do their thing, I don't see the problem.
And I say that as someone who is biased against him.

I am not even sure if he needs to hand the show over to the new people. I think if your CBS you might want to bring in your own people. The idea of grooming someone makes since if you talking about taking over the current shows or shows in production but starting over with a fresh start I think you would want someone not connected to what has already been done.

Jason

Why are you showing him the door when he hasn't made any other series so far? Discovery is just into season 2, and the Picard series is about to start production. Give the guy a chance to make his mark, then cast judgement.

Even if all the new spin-offs are great I am kind of saying he should still maybe leave. That is why I made the Berman comparison. The idea of staying to long in a place can be bad I think at some point. It's good to shake things up and bring in new voices after someone has been around for awhile to make sure things always stay fresh.

There's a world of difference between Kurtzman and Berman. I have no idea why you'd feel like he should leave.

I agree. But that doesn't mean things can go bad. Berman himself wasn't all that bad at first. He did help make TNG a hit. He just stayed to long.

I guess I just don't understand your penchant for thinking so negative about Kurtzman, when he's barely even done anything DSC-related yet.

I like Kurtzman. I jut don't know if I want him running Trek for 20 years. I don't want anyone to last that long. I like the idea of Ron Moore eventually getting a chance to run Trek for example but even then I think if he stays to long then you could could see a decline in quality.

20 years?!! He's been running Trek for barely 1 year. Who in Trek history has ever run something for a decade, let alone two? Even Roddenberry didn't have that kind of staying power. This is ridiculous.

Well I am taking in future projections with the current show and the ones that are about to be created. Also including his impact with the Kelvin Universe that goes back to 2009. I'm not saying he should go now or even in a couple of years. Maybe though once all these current show finally run their course then that is when you move on with someone else instead of going back to him, regardless of the quality because to have your impact into 5 shows and 2 movies is quite alot of Trek.

Jason

Eventually Kurtzman will wear out his welcome. We're nowhere near that point yet. We probably won't be after five years on the TV end either. After I think 10 years, he should go.

I thought Rick Berman should've left after 12 years. He didn't get promoted to Executive Producer of TNG until the beginning of the third season in 1989. So I'm only going to count from 1989 on. 1999, after 10 years, is when I started getting sick of Rick Berman. DS9 was ending, which he was hands-off with, Insurrection wasn't that great, and then there was the Ron Moore fiasco where he left VOY after only a couple months. But I say he should've left after 12 years instead of 10, despite my opinion, because it was too late to switch gears on VOY when it was already more than five seasons in. I think he should've finished out that series and left after the seventh season.

The fifth series probably still would've been cancelled "early" but Rick Berman wouldn't have been there to take the fall in 2005. So he wouldn't have gotten any of the blame. People would've said, "Remember when Rick Berman was still in charge? He kept the franchise running! And this new guy (whoever it would've been) totally ruined it! This new person killed the franchise!!!" Rick Berman would've looked a whole lot better if he didn't stick around until the end.

But back to Kurtzman. I think 10 years would probably be a good run for him. Like with the first two seasons of TNG with Berman, I don't count the Abrams films with Kurtzman because technically he was still an underling. He wasn't the one in charge.

The Khan series hasn’t even been confirmed to actually be going forward yet
I'm pretty sure it died when Nick Meyer left. He wouldn't have talked about it on Midnight's Dredge of all places if it was still a thing. It was 2 DiscoTrek regimes ago now.

I see that pretty much nobody talks about that Starfleet academy series anymore either (unless it was converted into second cartoon).

The only comment that's been given on it was a no comment in this interview here:

According to Variety's original report about the spin-offs, we were getting:
  • A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo currently serve as co-showrunners on the Hulu-Marvel series “Runaways” and are best known for creating shows like “Gossip Girl” and the CW’s reboot of Dynasty.
  • A limited series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
  • A limited series based around the “Wrath of Khan” story. Khan’s full name is Khan Noonien Singh. He was famously portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the original series episode “Space Seed” and again in the film “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.” Benedict Cumberbatch then played the character in the 2013 film “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
  • An animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
Along with those there was the possibility of a Picard series. That ended up being the first one announced, followed by a Section 31 series and two animated series. At this point, I think it's unlikely that we will see the Academy series or the Khan miniseries.

Well, never say never, but it looks I´ll be disappointed in this regard.
