Shift in Pop Music?

I'm a bit confused with the Darkness references - they were a cheesy 80s parody band for the pop market place? I don't see the relationship to the other band you mention. It's not like people took them seriously at any stage.

Yeah, they were garbage. I hate when a band like that comes out and people are like, "Yay, rock and roll is back!" Whenever a band has come along and REALLY rejuvenated rock, it's because they were innovative, not completely derivative of something that's already been done.

They are the only ones on the list that I can actually listen to without wanting to gouge my eyes out, so seeing this makes me happy. Now, to just find a way to dispose of Nickelback and Im happy

Don't Get me started on Nickleback there 'Rock Star' is the dictionary definition of irony since it is one of the least 'rock' songs ever written. It's music for people who have no real understanding of what music is.

I really hate Nickelback. It boggles my mind that people like them. I want to run them over with my car. I guess one good thing about them is that they make money for roadrunner records so that better bands on the label can get more exposure.

I know you arent canadian, but if you want, im in a facebook group called "Canadians against Nickelback"

Oh dear, Nickelback, Celine Dion AND Bryan Adams.

Seriously, what is the matter with you people?! :p

I dont know what you are talking bout. Ive never heard of these people, and they surely dont belong to us...

...;)

I don't pay as much attention to this as I used to but it seems to me on the radio in the US at least...the shift is from straight rap/hip hop and what used to be called alternative rock, to more legitimate dance music..where people actually sing. It also sounds more electronic than it used to, like dance music has shifted almost totally to producers who use "electronica" as a template. "Rock" stations seem to be playing older stuff, like the newer music is in limbo till the next big thing.

You'll see more and more metal on the billboard charts in the years to come. This is because metal has a devoted fanbase that tends to buy albums, whereas pop "fans" don't have any loyalty to their music whatsoever and are just on the lookout for the next flavor of the month to use as a ringtone and toss away after a couple months. Metal is more profitable than ever now. Just look at all the festivals and tours out there now, and the shitloads of merchandise and albums they're selling online and at shows.
And the independent metal labels(metal blade, relapse, earache, nuclear blast, century media, etc)know how to use the internet. They figured it out a long time ago while all those major label clowns were crying about Napster. And now, as the major labels go the way of the dinosaur, independent labels are thriving. :rommie:

How is Neil Young in the samegroup as Rush?

Anyways, Ill put my own list in then :p

The Tragically Hip, Matthew Good (band), Rush, and The Spades.

Ta for reminding me to check the date on the new Tragically Hip album, being meaning to do so for ages... 7/4, right in time for mid-semester, how annoying...

How is D.O.A. in the same group as any of them? I was going for famous and influential Canadian artists many Americans have heard of, not a list of my favourite Canadian artists. For that I raise you Sloan, who make Matt Good look like he's trying too hard.

IMO, it's their best album in a while, a real rock album, very energetic. Note I don't think they've ever released a "bad" album.

Who said those were my favourites? I just dont understand how Neil Young and DOA qualifies as 'good'

That, my friend, is the only decent thing those clowns Nickelback have ever done. I hate them, and would rather gouge out my own spleen than listen to their (cough) music. But they do bring in money for Roadrunner Records to sign and promote far better bands, true.

I agree. Metal fans are some of the most loyal music fans out there. They're a niche, true, (much like the Trekkies of music) but who cares what the mainstream press like, anyway? Most of the pop stuff these days is pure ephemeral throwaway garbage. Bring on the metal, I say! :)

Personally, I don't think it's much of a shift in musical tastes as it is a reflection of buying habits. Album charts let you see generally who is still buying entire albums, while the real dollars are being made in the downloading of single songs, IMO.

There was once a time when acts went out on tour to support their latest album--these days, acts drop an album to support their latest tour or simply dispense with releasing an album at all and just drop a single out there instead...

Sticking one or two singles on an album and filling the rest with shit has always been a staple of pop music. Whereas Hard Rock and Metal has always focused on an entire album.

Mainly the reason you'll see the current pop stars with a new single every summer but only get a new rock album every 3-4 years.

^Yeah, I agree. At least most metal or rock bands release an album every 3 years or so. I'd prefer that than have them knock something out every two months to satisfy some marketing suits.
