Shenzhou = flashback??

Mage

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Something I've been wondering about today....

What if all the scenes we'll see onboard the Shenzhou are flashbacks? The show starts on Discovery, with Burnham becoming part of the crew there, and in some flashbacks, we get the story about what happened on the Shenzhou?

They said that what we've seen in the trailers sofar is from the first three episodes. It would also explain why they said we'd be seeing two ships at the same time, but could also explain why we keep getting the feeling Shenzhou will be destroyed in the battle we've seen.

One of the better theories I have heard.

This bit from one of the showrunners in EW makes it sound like the contrary:

"When we meet her, she’s the first officer on the starship Shenzhou. Burnham’s choice that we’re alluding to is the most difficult choice you can make – it affects her, affects Starfleet, affects the Federation; it affects the entire universe.

That choice leads her to a different ship, the USS Discovery, and there we begin what Gretchen and I call our second pilot.”

I got the impression from the second and third trailers that the Europa ramming manoevre is witnessed by the Shenzhou bridge crew (probably without Burnham among them).

There is one shot of lifeboats leaving the Shenzhou, but I'm not sure the ship really gets destroyed (in those early episodes). Lifeboats have been used on Star Trek before without the ship being lost, eventually (First Contact is a famous example).

My feelings is we start on the Shenzhou, jump to Burnam on Discovery, then get flashbacks of the Shenzhou.

It seems likely now that Yeoh's character recurs throughout much of the season. Either there are ongoing flashbacks to the Shenzhou - which would justify the cost of those sets - or Georgiou survives whatever happens to the ship. Perhaps one of the points of beginning by telling the story of how the Shenzhou is lost is to set up Georgiou as an adversary to Burnham going forward.

After watching the latest preview I'm thinking this is exactly it. But I think Sarek is included as a 3rd period in time as well. So 3 time periods, young Burnham, Shenzhou's Burnham and Lorca's Burnham. Similar to All Good things, all events in each time period have an effect on eachother. Shenzhou's is the beginning of the war,
Yeow: "If they attack, we are the only line of defence"
Burnham: "Not if, when"

Lorca is in the middle of it of the war, this would be the actual setting which is 10 years pre TOS.

Young Burnham would be flashbacks and give you insight into her character. Each time they show Sarek, it seems to be very character driven.

It seems impossible for a TV show or movie to to tell a story in a linear fashion now so this is a very viable theory.

It makes sense since they've talked about how they switch the transporter and bridge sets back and forth from the Shenzhou to the Discovery

I can't help but notice we haven't seen any scenes in the Shenzhou which don't include cast members we know are Discovery crew. This leans me toward believing the Shenzhou stuff is potentially in the past, and we will revisit it regularly, a la OITNB or How To Get Away With Murder.

I don't know that Danby Connor has been confirmed as a Discovery crewmember, or if he has, I missed it. What about Dr. Nambue?

I have no idea who those people are.
I was referring to Burnham and Saru.
The cast was announced in dribs and drabs. Well before we got a trailer we got an announcement that two actors were cast as "Dr. Nambue" and "Ensign Connor" who were both Shenzhou crewmembers. Thanks to the trailers we know that Kayla Detmer (played by Emily Coutts) will be helmsman on both, as well.

If everything regarding the Shenzhou is only shown via flashbacks, it's interesting that yesterday's trailer seems to show it and the Discovery side by side fighting the Klingons. At least it looked that way when I scrutinized the clip in slow-motion.

That isn't the Shenzhou.

Unless she got a refit or something.

Are you sure? To me it looks like this Klingon green glowy thing is zapping past what could be the Discovery and ending up hitting what looks like the Shenzhou:
