She-Ra and the Princesses of Power

The videos I posted were, as I said before, people making an honest critique of the show, not excuses to slam it; I happen to agree with them. The critiques aren't any different from what professional critics would do, and to be frank, people like yourself are just angry that somebody did said honest critique, and isn't jumping on a popular bandwagon, so you all won't look at them because.... excuses.
A video being two hours long isn't an excuse, it's a perfectly valid reason. I'm also not watching these videos because if Imkeep them running it will make them money and I'm not going to support people I obviously disagree with financially. I also have zero interest in "X sucks and here's why" clogging up my recommendations.

Yes, that happened and a part of the fandom is toxic and sucks (and not just for that reason, there are other examples) but how does that reflect badly on the show?

Ian Jones-Quartey, the afro-american male on staff has been Rebecca Sugar's boyfriend (now fiance) since before development of the show started, so your implication that Sugar is a secret (or not so secret?) racist is a bit weird considering they both had to deal with actual racists because of their relationship. He'd have no problem bringing problems up with her, they never had just a boss/employee relationship.
The drawing also wasn't made by her, she still took responsibility for it though. It was made during a period when the entire staff just spat out designs and ideas to see of something useable came out of it. And sure, the drawing is problematic but I again fail to see how this is evidence the show sucks or that the staff isn't progressive. They're not perfect, a mistake was made, an apology issued and the drawing removed from subsequent prints of the book.

For those who complained about how long the Lily Orchard critique video was:

"Rose Quartz Is A Fucking Cunt"? Didn't you just say it was an honest critique that isn't different from what a professional critic would do? Somehow I think it's quite far prom a professional critique.

Most of the reasons you gave why the show sucks are subjective (the characters not being likable), ridiculous (feet and weight), outright lies (the show trying to garner sympathy for homeworld's facism), fan behavior that has nothing to do with the show whatsoever and a drawing from yesteryear of a character who never made it into the show.

Your claim that the show somehow defends facism is especially bad. Let's look at the things homeworld has done:

  • Colonization of other worlds, killing all native life in the process - condemned by the show/main characters
  • A strict caste system and suppression of individual freedom - condemned
  • Experimentation with shattered/deceased gems and creating what amounts to tortured creatures - condemned and shown as horrific as it is.
  • Corrupting countless gems on earth, takimg away their sanity and conscousness, reducimg them to a state resembling confused animals - condemned

About the staff not being as progressive as they claim ... I don't think they have ever claimed a specific level of progressiveness but let's look at some things:

  • Steven has a dark skinned indian-american girlfriend (which worth mentioning, that's still an issue for many people)
  • A stable, lesbian relationship, eventually a wedding with an on screen kiss on the lips.
  • A male main character who defies stereotypes, who is in tune with his emotions and who has primarily defensive powers (a shield and healing)
  • A wide range of strong, female characters
  • Realistically portraying emotional issues and long term consequences
It is pretty progressive, so is your problem that it doesn't reach some ideal level of progressiveness?

As usual, Takeru, you and others here are missing the main points and and just being dismissive of the critiques because they go against popular opinion and the massive hype this show's gotten, but what else is new?:vulcan: So Lily Orchard used the 'dreaded 'C' word-so what? As I said, it's an honest (and well-reasoned) critique, one that neither you or JD wanted to watch because it's 'too long' (are you both kids with ADD or something?) and it says things about the show you can't deal with, because 'how dare they say that?'

Also, did I not just indicate that I wasn't going to talk about the show anymore at the end of my previous post? If you have anything else to argue with me defending this show, PM me.

I don't have to have ADD not want to spend 2 hours watching a video, I really, really, really don't want to watch. I just really, really, really, don't want to waste 2 hours of my life on pointless bullshit when all I really wanted was a simple, as in something I could read in at most 5-10 minutes, explanation of the issues you have with the show.
All I was really looking for was something along the lines of, "I don't like the way it's written, or the character designs, or the politics of the show".
I'm honestly not that concerned about the issues you have with the show. I was just curious because I've seen you rip on the show several times, and you're one of the only people I've come across who hates the show with the absolute passion you seem to.

Happy holidays! ;)

More of the same anti-She-Ra bullshit, this time from a woman.

ETA: Also, about the character of Concrete in SU...
https://hornet.com/stories/steven-universe-concrete-racist/
A black man drew her.
I love Steven Universe and cosplayed as Rose Quartz. I love Garnet and see her as the cool aunt. I see Pearl as the overprotective mom figure and Amethyst as the cool big sister. Greg is a great dad who is, as of "Drop Beat Dad," rich but doesn't allow the materialistic to change him. He took on being a single parent after Rose gave up her physical form to bring Steven into the world and keeps Steven grounded to his human half. Is Greg perfect? No. Is he still a good dad? Yes!

Sorry I derailed the thread so bad. I guess we should probably get back to talking about She-Ra.

I wouldn't want to see He-Man, Skeletor and the rest of the characters in this style of artwork anyway. Hordak looks terrible so I can only imagine what kind of abomination the likes of Trap Jaw and Beastman would be.

Here's Noelle drawing and talking a bit about the show in a SyFy feature.

Some tidbits on season 2:
"I am very excited for the next season," said Stevenson. "I think we set up a lot of things in the first season. So much about the show is the characters just becoming who they are, and who they think they're going to be. It's Adora figuring out how to be a hero, it's Catra becoming more of a villain. Also power structures change in the first season. Shadow Weaver is overthrown and the Princess Alliance comes together. We're going to expand on that. And we’re going to see the characters in more situations."

"We're going to push them to their limits, in some ways," added Stevenson. "[We will] figure out what makes them who they are and what makes them the hero or the villain...Characters [are] coming, some cool new mythology coming, it's going to be fun."

There's more in the video about the show, how the character designs came about and stuff, but it seems to be region locked to the US though.

I'm loving the show, but I seriously hope that they give the Horde a big power boost next season. They were so badly outmatched in the finale that I felt terrible for the beatdown the princesses gave them. Poor Catra went into a fight barehanded against an 8 foot superwoman with a magic sword.

I've noticed that Netflix "seasons" of animated shows often tend to be half-seasons -- they order something like 26 episodes at a time and release them in two 13-episode "seasons" some 6 months apart, or order 13 episodes and release a 6-part "season" and a 7-part "season." I guess it makes sense for their release model, with a whole block of episodes dropping all at once, to break a season in half like that so there's less time between new episodes.

That is a good question. I believe they are calling season 2 but it is similar to what happened with Voltron.

^ It's a full second season of 13 episodes.

What happened with Voltron is that the shorter seasons were produced in 13-episode blocks but then released in smaller chunks as a creative and marketing decision in order to avoid long waits between releases.

Because She-Ra was basically given a four-season pickup off the bat, they can release the full seasons as they're produced.
