Is a cameo from the old Kirk and Spock still possible now Justin Lim is directing?
Apparantly the studio wasn't happy with the script, and the story Orci had is out the window. That is the rumour.
What do people think?
I agree. Ever since news broke that Orci would no longer be director, there has been a great deal of speculation.
If Paramount has found a new director, then there is a script.
Shatner confirmed that Orci had an idea about how he could appear in ST3.
As Shatner said he would only do the role if it's a meaningful part, I believe that he is important part of the plot and if he is out of this sequel, it's the same thing Nimoy out of Star Trek.
Shatner / Nimoy still a possibility?
I don't know a good way to make it work, other than a tag scene after the adventure is over. Like a 50 year jump into the future, a reunion dinner with the remaining original cast members.
There's already a great line for Kirk to toast the occasion: "To absent friends."
I'm a proponent and believe that Shatner and Nimoy SHOULD appear.
It's the 50th anniversary and...let's face the painful truth...these guys are in their 80s.
The time for this is NOW.
We're lucky they're still with us. We should take advantage and use them while we can.
There's plenty of chances for Pine and Quinto to stand on their own, but the 50th anniversary is something special.
If there was an appropriate time for a Shatner/Nimoy cameo, it would be now or never.
Now...we just have to make sure the writers can do a good job with it. But I'd be so friggin excited to see them both together on the screen again (which i never thought we'd see again) that you could have them both reading Insurance pamphlets for all I care.

Let's hope not; both men have done their bit, and need to let the new incarnations of the characters they played stand on their own merits. I don't see Takei, Nichols, or Koenig coming back-why Shatner and Nimoy?

Gotta disagree. Shatner and Nimoy are great, but they've both had a couple of curtain calls already. Heck, The Undiscovered Country was supposed to be their last hurrah and that was nearly a quarter of a century ago!
How many extra bows do they need?
Sure, there's an anniversary and all, but that doesn't mean you turn back the clock just to celebrate. I mean, you didn't see Sean Connery showing up in Skyfall.
And he's not getting any younger either.![]()
The difference with Doctor Who is that they found an in-universe way to have an 80+-year-old Tom Baker appear as an enigmatic character who may or may not be some future incarnation of the Doctor. As much as I loathe the general messiness of nuWho storylines - especially in the Matt Smith era - the character of the Curator worked. And it's been such a long time since Tom Baker played the Doctor, that it was a really special treat for him to come back.I'm a proponent and believe that Shatner and Nimoy SHOULD appear.

You know it amuses me for the 09 movie we got the whole 'will Shatner be in it' then for Doctor Who there was 'will the surviving classic Doctors be there [Tom Baker did a cameo however the other 4 instead did a spoof (which may I add was utterly fantastic) and a minisode (which to me is and was the jewel in the crown of the whole event - Paul McGann back on screen and in costume as the Doctor at last!)]?'
Do I want him there? Well let's just say if this is the worst Trek movie ever watching his performance as Kirk again would make the experience worth every penny of the cinema ticket/blu ray disc. I think it would have to be older time travelling Pine as Bill does look significantly older than 21 years ago, that showed during his Oscars sketch
But Simon Pegg seems to know his Trek so hopefully he will respect the history.
