Shatner / Nimoy still a possibility?

Is a cameo from the old Kirk and Spock still possible now Justin Lim is directing?

Apparantly the studio wasn't happy with the script, and the story Orci had is out the window. That is the rumour.

What do people think?

Anything is possible. Right now, script details are still under wraps, and the ball is yet to really start rolling. My own two bits would be that neither Nimoy or Shatner will be in the third installment.

Yea, we don't even actually know for a fact that the studio was unhappy with the script, that was never actually confirmed, and could be just a crap rumor like so much else has been

I agree. Ever since news broke that Orci would no longer be director, there has been a great deal of speculation.
If Paramount has found a new director, then there is a script.
Shatner confirmed that Orci had an idea about how he could appear in ST3.
As Shatner said he would only do the role if it's a meaningful part, I believe that he is important part of the plot and if he is out of this sequel, it's the same thing Nimoy out of Star Trek.

Orci is still producing; no one really knows what's happening behind the scenes, that's the problem with rumours!

Let's hope not; both men have done their bit, and need to let the new incarnations of the characters they played stand on their own merits. I don't see Takei, Nichols, or Koenig coming back-why Shatner and Nimoy?

Yes I believe they will be in the new film as much as I believe Spiderman will show up in the MCU.

This may be the last trek reboot and somehow someway, Shatner will make face.

I don't know a good way to make it work, other than a tag scene after the adventure is over. Like a 50 year jump into the future, a reunion dinner with the remaining original cast members.

There's already a great line for Kirk to toast the occasion: "To absent friends."

When news broke that Shatner would be in Orci's version of ST the response from the general public was very positive. Combine that with the fact that it's the series 50th Anniversary, I would be very surprised if they weren't involved somehow.

I was thinking the exact same thing. One of the only few ways for Kirk to appear was if he gives a future speech. maybe a toast as you call it.

the writers however have to be careful with the nostalgia this time. one of the reasons why Into Darkness failed for me was the nostalgia with the re acting of the spock death scene only this time it was spock who dies.

I'm a proponent and believe that Shatner and Nimoy SHOULD appear.

It's the 50th anniversary and...let's face the painful truth...these guys are in their 80s.

The time for this is NOW.

We're lucky they're still with us. We should take advantage and use them while we can.

There's plenty of chances for Pine and Quinto to stand on their own, but the 50th anniversary is something special.

If there was an appropriate time for a Shatner/Nimoy cameo, it would be now or never.

Now...we just have to make sure the writers can do a good job with it. But I'd be so friggin excited to see them both together on the screen again (which i never thought we'd see again) that you could have them both reading Insurance pamphlets for all I care.

In TOTAL agreement.

You know it amuses me for the 09 movie we got the whole 'will Shatner be in it' then for Doctor Who there was 'will the surviving classic Doctors be there [Tom Baker did a cameo however the other 4 instead did a spoof (which may I add was utterly fantastic) and a minisode (which to me is and was the jewel in the crown of the whole event - Paul McGann back on screen and in costume as the Doctor at last!)]?'

Do I want him there? Well let's just say if this is the worst Trek movie ever watching his performance as Kirk again would make the experience worth every penny of the cinema ticket/blu ray disc. I think it would have to be older time travelling Pine as Bill does look significantly older than 21 years ago, that showed during his Oscars sketch

But Simon Pegg seems to know his Trek so hopefully he will respect the history.

Because Shatner and Nimoy *are* Star Trek.

Gotta disagree. Shatner and Nimoy are great, but they've both had a couple of curtain calls already. Heck, The Undiscovered Country was supposed to be their last hurrah and that was nearly a quarter of a century ago!

How many extra bows do they need?

Sure, there's an anniversary and all, but that doesn't mean you turn back the clock just to celebrate. I mean, you didn't see Sean Connery showing up in Skyfall.

And he's not getting any younger either. :)

exactly, this whole idea of bring the old cast back by any means necessary is getting ridiculous to me. When spock prime showed up in Into darkness it was kind of out of place and just did not fit. he was need for star trek 2009 but not for the sequel. it will be overkill to bring shatner and nimoy back. kirk prime is dead as well, let him rest in peace.

The difference with Doctor Who is that they found an in-universe way to have an 80+-year-old Tom Baker appear as an enigmatic character who may or may not be some future incarnation of the Doctor. As much as I loathe the general messiness of nuWho storylines - especially in the Matt Smith era - the character of the Curator worked. And it's been such a long time since Tom Baker played the Doctor, that it was a really special treat for him to come back.

I can't say the same about Shatner/Nimoy. Kirk died at the end of "Generations." Spock has been nuSpock's Phone-a-Friend-from-another-universe crutch for a couple of movies now. As much as it would be nice to see them together one last time, it couldn't possibly make sense in the story unless Spock was reminiscing back to a time before Kirk died.

I say bring them back, bring back as many as possible. Not because I have some loyalty to TOS actors but because I think the time travel set up was awesome and should be continued. I like overcomplicated time travel plots (BTTF2 is my favorite & I like future Janeway thing in Endgame) and this is a unique opportunity to have old version of characters meeting young versions of characters.

I know a lot think it should just be its own thing but nah, it would be a missed opportunity with this good of a setup. )

A 50th anniversary appearance would be a nice gift, if it's written well.

Actually, it's my understanding that Albert Finney's character in Skyfall was MEANT for Connery, but because Connery would be playing a different character, it was deemed too distracting. Which was the RIGHT CALL in this instance.

However, Star Trek is always playing around with other dimensions, alternate timelines, mirror universes, and time travel.

We already got a Nimoy-Spock in the Abramsverse. How hard would it be to have Shatner and Nimoy in the 50th Anniversary...IF WRITTEN WELL, which admittedly may not be all that easy.

Still, I reiterate that I think it would be an nice gift to have them both one last time. If for no other reason than I *HATE* that Generations was Kirk's last appearance in Star Trek.

I think bringing Shatner and Nimoy back is risky, but it can work in the same way Rocky Balboa worked.

So it's kinda like a Rocky V thing. Rocky V was meant to be the last, but it didn't work out just like Generations didn't work out. So Stallone made Rocky Balboa, which ended up being a nice coda for the character and a more fitting end than Rocky V.

Same thing I'd like to see with prime Kirk. I'd like to see a better end for this iconic character than Generations. Though, unlike Stallone, he won't be the star.
