Shards and Shadows review thread (SPOILERS)

As I meant to mention when you first brought it up, given the ending of Fearful Symmetry I'd be surprised if Mirror Vaughn didn't at least get referenced in The Soul Key.

^Hmm interesting idea. Maybe that's why he hasn't popped up in any of the MU only books, the authors and editors wanted to save him for the DS9 MU arc.

My thought was that maybe we haven't seen MU Vaughn because

...maybe our Vaughn is going to stay over there.

In For Want of a Nail, Nechayev mentions the destruction of Memory Omega at Regula, after a single agent was compromised. This seems like a small sliver of a much larger story, is this foreshadowing for a future tale or was this implication that Nechayev's actions themselves was the cause necessitating MO's destruction?

Maybe he just dosn't exsist in that reality.

finished this a few minutes ago. for the people asking about Ill Winds, Lorna Simon is a character from Best Destiny by Diane Carey. I'm not familiar with Stone, Thorpe or Copowycz.

Overall, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. It was nice seeing more of the 'normal' characters counterparts. I wasn't in love with Nobunaga, because it was too hard to tell what was real and what was fake.

I liked Ill Winds, The Greater Good and The Black Flag. In particular, it was nice to see in IW and TBF that not all Terrans in the Empire are ruthless, heartless evil bastards. Even if they do 'play along'.

The Traitor was rather 'meh'.

The Sacred Chalice, Bitter Fruit, Family Matters, Homecoming, Empathy and For Want of a Nail were all good, although Empathy was too short.

A Terrible Beauty was alright, but it wasn't as good as the rest.

8/10

Want. More. Mirror. Universe.

^^Well, maybe I could've gotten away with making it longer, but I was told to aim for 10K. Maybe you were able to get away with 14K because some of the others ran short?

I wouldn't know, really. I was contracted to do 10k as well, and the story ended up needing to be longer. I suspected this in the outline stage and Marco didn't seem to have a problem with it. It worked out in the end.

Bill, I don't remember hearing about a story getting pulled, but then again, this book was in development for a good long while. :)

I don't even know. Part of me is thinking there was an author who had to drop out, and the other part is thinking that that was a previous anthology.
That's what I've been trying to remember too. Looking back at old announcements on different anthologies, I see Fred Bronson's planned story "Now You See Her..." was dropped from The Sky's the Limit; maybe that's what we're thinking of? The earliest Shards and Shadows announcement I've seen says twelve stories, the same number as in the finished book.

Yes, yes, that has to be it. I'm sure that somehow got linked with the rescheduling of S&S in my brain.

Hmmm... I'm wondering something. I'd be interested to know what's going on with L'Haan, because she's had some interesting things to do for such a tiny bit-player.

In The Sorrows of Empire, she was shown as a member of Spock's Vulcan underground - albeit a rather violent one. In Warpath, she's helping Iliana Ghemor take over from Intendant Kira.

We're left to assume that Iliana has been working with L'Haan for some time to help set-up the transition, such as leading the Intendant to believe that she's the one who's controlling Taran'atar. But how did L'Haan get from one to the other? Is she still with Spock's underground? Did she help get rid of the Intendant on his orders? Or is she a rogue agent? Either way, why does she think Iliana would be any better?

Things to ponder.

Over the past couple of days I've read both Bitter Fruit and Family Matters, and I really enjoyed both stories. I especially like the way that KRAD did FM, it definitely helped to make the story even more interesting than it already would have been.
Bitter Fruit:8
Family Matters: 8.5
Almost all of the stories so far have ended with a some sort of an opening for a sequel, so I just really hope we get follow ups to all of these.

Wasn't it "The Greater Good" that had Kirk's bit about "DELETE! DELETE! DELETE!" when he got that one subspace message? Gee, I wonder where they got THAT line. ;)

Well, not sure which word you use to erase something off a HHD or other computer based system, but delete would be the word used in these parts :bolian:
