Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings: The Rising and Advancing of the Spirit

It seems like her driving skills save them from what little we see in the trailer--meant to subvert this stereotype mentioned--a stereotype I never heard about until this thread BTW.

What? You've never heard of this stereotype?

“Fresh Off the Boat” just took on one of the most annoying stereotypes nearly every Asian-American has had to deal with in their lifetime.

Friday’s episode addressed a common belief that Asians are bad drivers. The stereotype prompts dad Louis to teach his son Eddie how to become the best driver he can be in an effort to shield him from such assumptions. But, in the process, he ends up being overly protective of Eddie.

The driver stereotype doesn’t just lead to unfair assumptions, it’s also untrue. Research shows that Asians are actually the best drivers. The National Center for Statistics and Analysis looked at race and ethnicity in 2006 traffic safety data. The figures revealed that Asians have the lowest fatality rates. Asians also had the highest rate of safety belt use.

I think it's fair to say Marvel doing their first movie with an Asian lead is at least as big a deal (and overdue) as when they had their first black and female lead with 'Black Panther' & 'Captain Marvel' respective. Yeah, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage beat them to it on TV, but the movies is what grabs the most eyeballs.
That said, since Marvel TV dropped the ball and didn't make a 'Daughters of the Dragon' show, I'm pretty sure this is the first MCU project with an Asian lead, movie or otherwise. AoS & Runaways were ensemble shows, and all the other major Asian characters thus far (Woo, Wong, Mantis etc.) have been in supporting roles.

Uh huh. And if CNN etc said that I wouldn't have posted. But they didn't say that. They keep saying he is Marvel's first Asian super hero. There have been a half dozen others listed in this thread off the top of people's heads.

I'd say Chloe Bennett [Wong] was the first Asian superhero lead.

Marvel has revealed their movie merch, including 2 Funko Pop!s, a LEGO set, Legends figures of pretty much all of he major characters, some other figures, a toy bo staff, and the "Legend of the Ten Rings Blaster", a gauntlet that shoots either foam or plastic rings based on a collection of rings the Wenmu wears on his forearms. It looks like he's wearing 5 on each arm, so I'm wonder if those are the ten rings, instead of rings that he wears on his fingers.

Pretty sure CNN was only thinking about the movies; either assuming most of the viewer/readership only care about the movies (fair) or just didn't think the TV shows counted.
And if we want to get super anal about it, this is Marvel STUDIOS' first time. All the pre-Wandavision shows were under the auspices of Marvel ENTERTAINMENT. Different company.

They said Marvel super hero. And Wong has been in 3 MCU FILMS so even going all pedantic doesn't work. They screwed up.

Awkwafina just played a dragon in the Disney animated movie Raya and the last Dragon.

Is she playing a dragon in this?

Is she playing thew same dragon?

Not really fair to say Marvel TV dropped the ball on that since Netflix canceled all of those shows before they could get there.

I'm still hoping now that the rights from Netflix have expired that those characters will be revived for such a show.

He wasn't the star. The movie wasn't about him. But fine, whatever. This is not a hill I care enough about to die on. Call me lackadaisical, but the precise wording of a CNN entertainment fluff piece does not seem worth getting one colon in a knot over.

I meant they dropped the ball in the sense that they should have done 'Daughters of the Dragon' *instead* of those two seasons of 'Iron Fist'. Also, they made two seasons of 'Iron Fist'. Ball firmly dropped.

The way I see it, being able to claim that in a fluff piece is probably the reason for getting the exposure in the first place. They're talking about Shang Chi and not Black Widow if I'm not mistaken. Asian Americans have had a rough patch of late so I think they're starved for positive things like this to promote.

That must be it. The 10 rings are on his arms now and they seem to give some power to the wearer. Also 10 rings is the organization that was in the first Iron Man.

In the comics, Mandarin has ten rings that he wears on his fingers which give him various powers, so these do seem to be based on those. I wonder if the MCU versions will have the same powers as the comics ones, or if they'll change them up. But Shang-Chi, IIRC, doesn't have any powers of his own, so it makes sense to give him these to give him a bit of a "boost," so to speak.

I'm curious to find out how he ends up with the rings. I wonder if there's going to be some kind of quest element where he has to gather them all.
