Coming from the other side of the fence, I've always found it bizarre when Trek fans look down on Stargate. I've always found Star Trek to be a bit bland, sterile and lifeless by comparison. Everything seems to formal for me, that's not to say I don't enjoy it, but not as much as Stargate.

I got the whole 10 seasons for chrimbo and have been working through it (my first viewing aside from about 6 random episodes). I have to say that without Richard Dean Anderson the show wouldn't have lasted long, much as I like Michael Shanks and Christopher Judge. He carries the whole show as far as I can see.

I enjoyed both SG-1 and Trek. They don't have a lot in common besides being sci-fi shows that travel to alien planets, so it seems a bit silly to compare them.

Here's a question that is slightly on topic: Since the show is cancelled, will they release the season 2 dvd as a whole season or split it up? I really hate it when they split seasons. Also, when do you think a season 2 dvd will come out? Sometime in 2012?

I think it's a safe bet that they're not splitting the seasons up this time, as if they were 2.0 would probably have been out by now, or at the very least it would have been announced already. As for the full season sets, I doubt we'll have to wait until 2012. Last season the region 1 set was out in October, and the region 2 set was out as early as July.

Since season 2.0 hasn't been announced yet, at least not as far as I know, it stands to reason that they'll just release the entire season when it finishes airing on SyFy.

Seriously, if you wait one entire season and six episodes until you actually reveal what the fuck the story is probably about, you deserved cancellation.

I'm late to the party,but Ifollowed SGU on Hulu before I went to basic training in the military.Having seen the later episodes,i ve concluded that the reason SGU didn't take was that it didn't have a core purpose.BSG had a direction and purpose,even with the previous Stargate series' you could watch any episode and get a general idea of what the charachters are seeking to accomplish.SG-U left you wondering what the blue crap were the charachters trying to accomplish,because they obviously can't go home-but that's the titular goal.So instead of showing a constructive series of events of the haphazard crew trying toget home as fast as they can manage by hook or crook,we get bickering and pointless drama

I hate that too. At least I'm glad that 20th Century Fox is starting to realize that and is releasing its shows in both formats (as evidenced by the 1st seasons of SGU & Glee).

As for Stargate SG-1, I'd largely agree with the sentiment of Seasons 4-6 being the best, although Season 6 sees the beginning of the trend of writing episodes to feature Jack O'Neill as little as possible while still making him a vital component of the show.

Season 7 has a lot of good episodes but also some real crap ("Space Race," "Avenger 2.0," "Inauguration"). Plus, that was when I realized that the show wasn't really going anywhere or building up to anything pre-planned. They just wanted to milk it for as long as possible. Fair enough. I might like it more on another re-watching now that I've adjusted my expectations accordingly.

Season 8 is mostly forgettable except for the last 5 episodes and a couple other Daniel-centric eps ("Icon," "Prometheus Unbound"). Most of the episodes really feel like they're scraping the bottom of the barrell for ideas (especially "Avatar," "Affinity," & "Covenant").

But honestly, I suppose I really need to go back and rewatch a lot of the show. It's been ages since I've watched anything from before Season 9.

They dropped a hint here and there, but I have to admit (even though I like season seven) that there isn't a whole lot of build up towards Atlantis over the year. We know it's coming, but we just sort of get there in the end (well, almost) because, hey, it's the season finale!

I'd never hold the relative lack of build-up against season seven because I found most of the earlier seasons all the more lacking in that regard. I thought seven did a novel job.

Really? You call that a build up? There are two reasons I don't like season 7, Daniel came back and that was lame. The other was there were hardly any episodes that actually dealt with them looking for the Lost City, there should have been a lot more episodes in which they go searching and there was next to nothing.

Exactly. Every episode save the season opener and season finale from the seventh year could be excised without eliminating one essential detail in the "Search for Atlantis" story arc.

And to quibble, what's this obsession with "pre-planning?" Isn't it simply "planning" people wish the writers were after?

Yeah, I have to say, when I watched all the way through the series I was disappointed the Atlantis storyline didn't get more of a build-up. They paid a bit of lip service to it throughout the season but that was it.

I don't mind if writers don't plan out every detail in advance, however they should have some general idea where they're going, and just build the story toward that, leaving themselves enough wiggle room to change course if they have a better idea. Going into it with no plan at all is gonna fuck you, though.
