SGU CANCELLED!

Exactly. As soon as five episodes into the show warning bells should've been going off left and right that there'd be trouble if they continued like that. The first half season is for making the basics known to enough viewers to continue, not to put the audience to sleep so they won't tune in again next week.

Remember when TLC used to be known as "The Learning Channel"? It aired wall to wall documentaries dealing with science and history. Now it's home to Kate PLus 8. :wtf:

Ya gotta love basic cable...or not....

Sean

I wouldn't mind if the scavenging shows were on, maybe, Discovery? I would like some actual history every so often.

I'm very amused that this thread has seen far more action than the episode discussion threads have. Hell, the cancellation seem to have made the forum more active overall.
SG:U was uninteresting but bemoaning the fate of genre TV is fascinating. :D

Eeeyuck. Which reminds me, one of History Channel's best shows is The Universe, which really belongs on TLC or Discovery, because isn't history supposed to be about human beings? And if it happened before human civilization, then it's "prehistoric." So the Big Bang isn't exactly history, is it?

That's why I loved TLC in its original form, about fifteen years ago. Back then it covered both science and history equally. But you're right, The Universe should really be on Discovery, or Discovery Science.

And the Sci-Fi Channel should be running SF shows. Ugh. This is why I'm reading more than ever before.

Well, it's called growing the brand. The fact is that speciality and niche cable channels hit a ceiling in terms of their viewerships, and the corporations which own them require that revenues continue to grow at a greater pace than these relatively limited audiences can sustain.

So, once established for a while content on these channels "broadens" - it's not accidental that you can cite additional examples; it's the way the business works.

Science fiction TV seems to have a pretty low ceiling in terms of dedicated audience, unfortunately - and unless it's called Star Trek that audience doesn't get anywhere near ten million.

Yeah, it's a trend you can see happening all over TV, not just with Sy-Fy. Instead of just depending on specialty channels to deliver what you want, we now have to concentrate on what's playing everywhere, now.

[QUOTE

Just look at the crap on the History Channel. Apparently history is truckers, loggers, pawn shops and Adolph Hitler.[/QUOTE]

Why, there's a gripping ep of Hitler's Bodyguards on right now! :)

At least Hitler has something to do with history. When was the last time on WWE someone whipped up a thermonuclear reactor to time travel back to avoid the chair to the head?

Seriously however, I am sad to see SGU go. It had it's problems with bad actors (Louis Ferreira, Alaina Huffman, Elyse Levesque) and bad writing (Scott/Chloe continuing even against fan backlash), but it also had it's good points. No show can be perfect, but SGU was weighed down by it's dead weight.

As for the previously mentioned possibility of a reboot of SG-1, do you really need that? Do we really need to reboot a series that is fourteen years old. I see Stargate at a crossroads. Star Trek got too burdened under it's own continuity and needed a reboot to be competitive fiscally. Stargate has many more stories to tell (the Furlings just to name one) and is certainly not in need of a reboot.

I don't believe there is a network in the U.S. called the Sci-Fi Channel any longer.

It'll always be skiffy to me. :p

No, it's called destroying the brand. :rommie: I know it's a common idea that "branding" is just meaningless corporate babble but there are actually right and wrong ways to expand the meaning of your brand without throwing a hodgepodge out there that confuses everyone and renders your brand nonsensical.

Example of the right way to do it: P&E is expanding their Mister Clean brand into car washes and dry cleaners. See, that makes sense. The way cable TV does it, they're opening a Mister Clean pizza franchise. :ack:

Cable TV is just desperate and confused. There's no strategy to loggers on a history channel.

Instead of just depending on specialty channels to deliver what you want, we now have to concentrate on what's playing everywhere, now.
I wouldn't mind getting history shows on skiffy and sci fi on the History Channel, but the problem is, I'm getting loggers and pro wrestlers on both, and I don't want that crap at all!!!

The trick to growing any brand is to produce quality {whatever} that your target consumer will want.

SyFy has not, by and large, done that for a very long time. They could have done great with reruns of old classic SF shows as well as even lower budget original product as well as a few higher-profile products, but they show crap instead, and when they do "low budget" instead of giving creative, cost-conscious films, they give us "Mansquito" and "Mega Shark".

That's just embarrassing.

if we're lucky Stargate will come back as...SHARKTOPUS GATE. if we're lucky. :p

the Ori come back as octopus type aliens. young school girls run in terror! things explode! Vala says funny things! it will be magical!
