SGU CANCELLED!

Call me a nut, but, I really enjoyed the characters and liked the show alot. It's a bit startling that we have no space travel sci-fi show on TV for the first time since 1987. At least I don't have to subsist on just the original 79 Trek shows and Buck Rogers. There's LOTS of good sci-fi to rewatch from the last 23 years.
Personally, I have doubts that Blood and Chrome will ever see the light of day, despite what they say. It'll cost AT LEAST twice as much as SGU to produce and I just don't see a willingness to fork over that kind of outlay right now on new sci-fi.

I think they should have given the franchise a little more respect and atleast given it just one more season to finish the story off.

Nothing would make my day more but at $2million production cost per episode, I doubt they're in a charitable mood!

RIP SGU; it was a great run while it lasted :(

The pilot will certainly "see the light of day." Blood and Chrome was originally going to be a webseries, so its promotion to a telemovie / backdoor pilot is telling that Syfy wants a "prestige" show, even if ratings for Caprica and SGU didn't warrant renewal for either. Whether Blood and Chrome receives a series order after the telemovie airs will, of course, depend entirely on the ratings that the telemovie achieves.

It'll cost AT LEAST twice as much as SGU [...]
What makes you so certain of this? SGU used actual sets and required location shooting; Blood and Chrome will be using virtual sets and greenscreen backgrounds.

The cancellation was well deserved. Poor ratings and poor writing, acting and premise equals cancellation. I won't miss it.

And before I am being labelled as a basher, I own all seasons of SG-1 and Atlantis on DVD and I enjoyed them greatly. SGU blatantly tried to copy the infinitely superior BSG and failed completely.

You're not a basher for that reason.
I'm likely a basher because I just hated what they did the franchise I was starting to appreciate...such a shame.

Could have saved a hell of a lot of money and canned it sooner.

Exactly...but more than that it shows that someone in the business aspects isn't working objectively. How can they pretend to put this show out knowing what it was like. Do not preview the first few episodes to see if it has a possibility of tanking?

I know movies are done that way.

Where the Stargate writers went wrong is in presuming that just because the BSG writers were good at "dark, grown-up" drama, that they could imitate them successfully.
I wouldn't praise BSG too much. That show also had a phase where it wasn't much more than a third-rate soap opera.

It was a logical decision. They're ratings dipped below 1 million viewers for a few weeks.[/QUOTE]

It dropped bellow 1 million once...but it never really got above 1.1 million after than even the mid season finale was under 1.1 million... That's Flat Line....

Stargate Universe was my first Stargate series and I really liked the characters and how they dealt with their problems. Too bad I was among the few who did...

In hindsight, maybe the show did spend too long on the crew dealing with being stuck on a spaceship and it probably did drive away some longtime Stargate fans and didn't pull in enough new ones. It did seem, though, that the show had just found its "mission", but now it's too late...

Well, man, enjoy the dead air.

If nothing else, you can rewatch SG-1 and Atlantis. Watch a different episode each night and it will get you through the next year.

I'm not all that sad. At least I still have Bones and DOOL left to watch, And plenty of Books to read. I was just looking at how the daytime soaps were doing ratings wise(DOOL is getting 2.6 million viewers and Y&R gets 5 mil.) and its sad that SGU couldn't even get higher ratings than the soaps.

[Tangent Alert]

I used to really enjoy DOOL--if I had to be in class I'd record it on my VCR and couldn't wait to get home to watch it(the buried alive Carly storyline, Marlena's possession, Hope/Gina saga etc) but after about 2000 the show just was never the same anymore. Like I was mentioning with a shows from this past decade- DOOL just recycles way too many storylines done before and done better as well as ruining characters(i.e. Sami/Stefano) I once enjoyed watching while at the same time getting rid of actors/characters and bringing in younger characters I can't stand(Chloe, Nathan, Gabi, Chad, Phillip). Plus their budget has taken such a hit that the production values like the sets are awful.

I really wanted to like SGU, but it sucks worse than a bowling alley birthday party.

Maybe they'll just toss everyone out an airlock slowly in the finale.

the show was getting better. i'll add my voice to that group of people. i guess to me its like if they canceled TNG after its second season.

This post reminds me of back in Enterprise's first two seasons, whenever anyone would criticize it someone would defend the show by saying "you can't diss the show yet. It hasn't reached its third season, and that's when TNG got good."

Just because it took TNG three years to get good does not mean we're supposed to hold off criticism of a show in its first two seasons. If you feel a show is crap, you have a right to express that opinion regardless of what season it's in. And a good show usually grabs you in some way right from the start. I can tell you both SG-1 and Atlantis had me a lot more interested by the end of their first seasons than SGU did when its first season ended.

How do you figure? Blood and Chrome will be filmed on virtual sets and is rumoured to feature a smaller cast than SGU. If you think featuring space battles is going to raise the budget substantially, it won't. While they certainly aren't cheap, space battles these days are more affordable than most people realize. Caprica actually cost more to produce than BSG.

I wonder if they would be able to film a two (or four) hour wrap up episode in the time between now and the airing of the 40th episode.

I wouldn't mind seeing a conclusion with stop motion animation of lego men and women broadcast through Youtube... i mean they may have to recast a few parts if a few of the actors arn't willing to volunteer a lunch time or two between paying gigs, but fuck it. We need resolutions.

It didn't have a week where the writing was as superficial and rote as the best the Stargate franchise has ever offered.

Being an Admin of a fairly large Stargate site...It went down hill when this SGU came out.
I kept telling people it was going to get canceled, but no one listened to me. Being an Admin for almost 5 years I guess ya kinda see where things were heading. Up grading show stats and the like, I really had to pay attention to the episodes plots etc. And personally they sucked. So many things wrong with the show...too many too mention.
It's like they canceled a top rated show (SGA) for this? No wonder MGM is having financial troubles. They cancel a perfectly good show that was making them a ton of money and they lose it all and more, with SGU. Talk about stupid financial choices.
