SGU: A poor imitation of Voyager?

Depending on who you listen to, they're between one and fifty million years out from Earth. Even assuming the ship was taking the scenic route while it was unmanned and it could plot a more direct course back to Earth, it's still going to be a long damn time before they're anywhere near Earth. And that's not even counting the fact that the Destiny gates aren't galactic-range like the modern ones, so they'd have to practically be on top of Earth to make a connection (without a power boost, of course).
Actually, they are billions of light years from Earth. And I suspect the Destiny gates range limitation might have to do with the fact that they don't have DHDs, meaning that the addresses aren't being adjusted for stellar drift. That's probably why the gates can't dial intergalactic addresses, along with power issues.

You don't have to get in RANGE of Earth to use the Stargate but you can get closer so that Zed-PM can connect the gates...because clearly they didn't have that tech back then.
