If anyone's interested, I'm reposting JuanBolio's prediction...

My prediction for next week - the sun is going to recharge the ship, but they won't know that until the last possible second, and in the meantime will be at each other's throats as to who survives and who doesn't. Everyone will be exposed for who they truly are in a life-or-death scenario, as well as who would off who if it came down to it.

You have my word.
(And you have my bow)
(and MY axe)

Not to steal his thunder, but wasn't that all bleeding obvious? Of course that was what was going to happen!

Mr Awe
Jealous?

You're jealous. :shifty:

^ And I thought BSG was a monumental success on just about every level. The casting, the acting, the story, the production design, the mythology, the cinematography, the special effects... It had its problems here and there, but it excelled.

Oh well. :p
Oh, well indeed. :rommie: We probably shouldn't go any further with the nuBSG dissection in the Stargate Thread, though.

Back to Stargate... There were a few minor changes made when the movie went to series, but basically, SG-1 is a continuation of the movie with O'Neil and Daniel Jackson recast. Kurt Russell's O'Neil is quite different from Richard Dean Anderson's, but Michael Shanks does a pretty good imitation of James Spader's Dr. Jackson. When the series was in the planning stages, RDA insisted on playing O'Neill (now with two "L"s) with a bit more humor. As for Carter and Teal'c, they aren't in the movie.
Yeah, I can imagine that Russell is quite different from RDA. Should be interesting to compare, though.

You've never seen the film? Holy shit. I've never meet anybody who's watched SG-1 or Atlantis and never seen the film.
Well, I more or less got into Stargate rather late, through re-runs.

Managed to watch it last night.

Very good episode. Nicely put together, and the action/mystery element was VERY welcome after the complete snoozefest that was Darkness.

Col. Young is a great character. Very well cast.

More action next week though please.

Enjoyable hour, surprisingly. This show is actually surprising me--didn't think I'd like it due to the supposed nuBSG "ripoff".

But the difference here is that there is no Cylon diversion and screwing up of that storyline, just plain old survival.

A bit hokey in parts, but that contrasts favorably in my mind with how godawfully seriously nuBSG took itself in later years.

I'll tune in next week. Hope this storyline doesn't get old, which it will if it is all about survival, period.

You're jealous. :shifty:

Oh please.

It was obvious to ALL what would happen. Check message boards all over the internet, most people guessed that the ship would be recharged using the sun. Mostly because it was completely obvious and predictable!

So no, don't feel so proud of yourself because you were just stating what most others were thinking. No sh*t Sherlock srpings to mind, as does 'stop being so full of yourself and egotistical'

Uh...I think he was just kidding there...

I really enjoyed this episode.

Although I assumed early on that ultimately they'd end up slingshotting around the star or something of that nature, I really really got to a moment where I said out loud to my TV "how the frak are they getting out of this one?". Very suspenseful stuff.

Then, of course, in an uber-ironic turnaround, I assumed the shuttle was going to bite it. Further gut-wrenching as they made it back.

This is not your daddy's Stargate. No plot devices or last minute Carteresque solutions here. It really feels like the crew of the Destiny is at the mercy of the ship, the universe, and just about everything else - they're just along for the ride at the moment.

I was glad we didn't see any more bodyswapping this week. Hopefully they'll tone that down now, although I was surprised it wasn't used for those who didn't get a place on the shuttle, but I almost preferred it this way, I don't want it to become a "scene-of-the-week" device and have everyone pop home for a good cry.

Yawn yawn yawn yawn yawn.

FAIL: at the end of the last epsiode, I commented that the Destiny must be heading to the sun for fuel. Throughout this episode it was clear it was doing so. Yet these intelligent people can't work it out? They lose any credibility.
FAIL: they won't die, so no tension. At least shows like SG1 kept you busy as the cast worked their way out of the problem. This lot? They sit and mope until something fixes itself. Pathetic.
FAIL: getting very bored of non-descript gray sets, interspersed with fancy (although admittedly nice) effects out the window.
FAIL: more moody dialog on to those infernal video cameras.
FAIL: I don't care about them. Burn in the sun. I really don't care and apart from Rush being interesting, not one of these is likeable.

I can't believe this is a Stargate show. Sure update it, but don't gut it. That humour, that warmth, that connection with the cast of the old shows is just gone. Completely gone. They don't even use the Stargate, they're so ashamed of their heritage.

Do those ratings make the Gate a success?
Looks marginal to me. I don't know how they compare to SG-1 or Atlantis, but they're not much better than Sanctuary, which is a lot less expensive. I'm thinking it's probably a disappointment, but doing well enough to continue for a while.

Well, they increased for week two, but have decreased for week three and then again for week four. Two weeks of decrease isn't enough to point to a trend yet, but it's enough to prevent anyone from shouting about the great success of Stargate Universe.

What a suspenseful episode!! They're going to fly everyone into a sun at the beginning of the series!!

Just kidding. Terrible writing... I give it a 3.

Stargate Atlantis: season one
Rising (week one) had a rating of 3.2.
Suspicion (week four) had a rating of 2.2.

Stargate Atlantis: season five
Search and Rescue (week one) had a rating of 1.3.
The Daedalus Variations (week four) had a rating of 1.3.

Stargate Universe: season one
Air (week one) had a rating of 1.7.
Light (week four) had a rating of ?*.

*I'm not sure what the conversion between millions of viewers and ratings points is. But you can see that it's not as high as Atlantis in its first season, but higher than Atlantis in its final season. Also, keep in mind that this is the most expensive Gate show SyFy has produced, by a significant margin according to the producers.

The DVR ratings made this the highest rated ep. in years.

SYFY’s STARGATE UNIVERSE REACHES NEW SERIES HIGH WITH LIVE +7 DATA
Episode Two Audience Grows To Three Million Total Viewers and Continues as Most Watched Stargate In More Than Four Years

New York, NY – October 26, 2009 – The second episode of Syfy’s Stargate Universe on Friday, October 9, reflecting full Live +7 DVR data, became the most watched Stargate since March 2005 when its reached three million total viewers (2.99 million), along with a 2.1 HH Rating, 1.7 million Adults 18-49 and 1.85 million Adults 25-54.
Among Adults 25-54, it is the best performance for the franchise since July 2005 and is the best performance for a Stargate telecast in Adults 18-49 since July 2004. The episode also drew the most total viewers for any Stargate since March 2005.

MGM's spin machine will cling to those DVR numbers until it explodes, but whether they matter at all is another question.

Second point, that article refers to Air, Part III (week two). Not this episode, which is Light (week four).

Personally I thought Rush hadn't a clue about what was going to happen.

Thoughout the whole episode (until the end), Rush has seemed to have come to terms with his fate. As such, whatever was his problem that was causing him to act the way he did suddenly went away, leaving us with what I suspect Rush is really like (a shockingly nice guy).

There are two big hints to the characters motivations.
1) He prefers to die rather then be forced to spend his time with people.
2) The look of shock on his face when Young clasps his shoudler in a friendly manner.

The last scene seems to be him attempting him to distance himself again. It may be cliched(more a trope), but I wonder if the death of his wife has anything to do with it.
