SF Academy and the Dominion War

Crewman47

Commodore
Newbie
Not sure if this has ever been discussed before but during the two or three years of the War what do you suppose was happening at the Academy, would more Cadets be enrolled during these years, what about the ones alreay there? Also what about the moments just after the Breen attack, can we assume that the Academy may have been in the attack zone and can also assume that some Cadets may have been killed or injured?

Basically what happens at the Academy during War time?

life goes on. Cadets already in the Academy would continue their courses, fourth years probably being accelerated into field placements. new recruits would come in as well. security and tactical classes probably gained more prominence. i'd say probably quite a few cadets were killed or injured in the Breen attack, but the brunt of the attack was probably on SFC

I don't get why there's one Academy - surely that wouldn't provide enough graduates for one planet, let alone a union of hundreds of planets... Not unless the academy covers the whole of San Francisco, or something ridiculous like that. Plus one academy = a really easy but critical target for the UFP.

This is covered in quite a few of the books - the Academy is the main one but it has campuses all over federation - because you are right, it would not make sense otherwise.

For a quick historical based possibility. During WWII graduation time was only three years for the Midshipman at the Naval Academy to facilitate getting more of them commisioned and out fighting.

Nog, a cadet at the academy, was graduated early as an Ensign and sent back to DS9.

O'Brien commented, "I didn't realize things were going that badly." :D

Why would a citywide Academy be ridiculous?

Surely there's nothing impossible or impracticable about processing all the officer hopefuls (and possibly also the enlisteds) through San Francisco. The United States Navy today has some 330,000 personnel, and its primary institute of education processes 4,400 students per batch. If Starfleet maintained a similar ratio of one officer student per every 75 active servicemen, a force ten million creatures strong (say, some 10,000 ships with 500 crew apiece on the average, plus the same number of support personnel) would need to process some 135,000 students. Several universities today claim this sort of attendeeship, even if partially via remote studying. Logistically, cramming 135,000 people (or four times that many, assuming all these folks stay for four years) in a single city for unity-building ceremonies and joint courses wouldn't be a problem, either.

In a military as diverse as Starfleet appears to be, unity would be of essence. Having a single location for graduation would enforce that unity quite nicely. Not to mention that it would be an important pilgrimage to the capital world, the first one for many.

Tackling this from the other end, there's no onscreen evidence that people could graduate from other locations, even though people may attend the entry exams elsewhere, and probably can take courses outside San Francisco as well.

Can't believe it took the posters in this thread this long to mention this.

I mean, Nog is a very clear example of what happened at the academy - they basically got 'em out the door and into the field as quickly as possible.

And by the way, I LOVE that O'Brien line. Classic Miles!
