Series 9 - Coming September 19! (And a trailer!)

Flatline was great. Kill the Moon's ending annoyed the living hell out of a me and I have no interest in seeing Forest again.

"Kill the Moon's" ending is my favorite part of the whole episode! And I love how it was followed up in "Forest."
Yeah, I liked the ending too. I totally understood it from Clara's POV. And I would've reacted in the same fashion.

I am pretty sure it is not Clara's reaction people have a problem with, but the magic moon egg laying space dragon hatching from a magic moon egg.

Ah. Yeah, I was fine with the creature hatching, but it was pretty silly for it to immediately lay another moon egg.

Lots and lots of S9 news here of varying levels of Spolierocity.

The most interesting? The only person appearing in Episode 11 is Peter Capaldi. Which explains this photo...

Also, Episode 9 looks like it will be "Found Footage" style rather than the previously rumoured POV (though they're close enough to see where the confusion came from) and may drop the Opening Titles.

I'm not really a big fan of "found footage" movies, so this doesn't really excite me that much.

As for episode 11 being solely Capaldi and no one else? I'll admit, it's an intriguing concept. Indeed, the similarly done episode of Family Guy about Brian and Stewie locked in a bank vault for a weekend is one of the highlights of that series, and not even for its comedic moments. But episode 11, the penultimate episode of the season is sure to be really relevant to the season arc, and therefore I question if it's the most appropriate time to try a gimmick out like this.

If ep 11 is a one-hander, I wonder if this is when Capaldi goes back to Day of the Doctor? It'd be excellent setup for the finale.

I don't know why but I have found with modern-Who from series 2 on that the episodes come across better when you watch them the second time. Often I will watch the series live and be unsure about whether or not I liked the episode. But once I know how the series end, and I rewatch on DVD, I can then decide if I like a particular episode or not.

Maybe I am just weird...

No, I think you're right. I've found this to be the case with nearly every single episode. The only times this phenomenon doesn't work are when I really, really loved the episode the first time around and there's really no room in my opinion for improvement. (I.e. "The Girl in the Fireplace," "The Impossible Planet," "The Satan Pit," "Human Nature," "The Family of Blood," "Blink," "The Lodger," "The Impossible Astronaut," "The Doctor's Wife," "The Power of Three," "Nightmare in Silver," "The Day of the Doctor," "Flatline.")

I am incredulous after reading the list. It has been my experience, when something is described as being a fan favorite or an instant classic before release, that when that something is released, it has been anything but a fan favorite or instant classic. There are exceptions - however, they are rare.

Mark Gatiss has a mixed record. He had some successes - "The Unquiet Dead" and the "Crimson Horror"; yet, many of the other episodes were of far lower quality. So, while I don't discount the possibility of him writing a classic, I think it more probable that he will write a good or average script.

Agreed. I just checked the list of Gatiss' episodes and none of them are what I would call "classics." Even his best episodes, like "The Unquiet Dead" & "Robot of Sherwood," are only slightly above average.

Well, Kill the Moon being "better than I remembered" still isn't the same as being good, but at least marginal improvement is still more than Forest of the Night has going for it. I think Forest might actually be worse than Fear Her.

Ouch. I can't agree with that. "Fear Her" is the 2nd worst episode that the new series has ever produced. (The absolute worst is and probably always will be "Love & Monsters.")

Comparatively, "In the Forest of the Night" at least has a solid performance from Capaldi. And I really enjoy the deliberately obnoxious kids.

While "Kill the Moon" is so scientifically ridiculous, it also has some great performances behind it. And I love the big fight between the Doctor & Clara at the end. It gives me chills, even though I hate watching it. (I'm not even quite sure which side I'm on. I think Clara was too harsh towards the Doctor but I also think the Doctor was being unfair by not helping Clara. While I agree that it was not the Doctor's decision to make, he still, as a friend, should have stayed to help Clara and give her as much information, or at least educated speculation, as he could.)

Gwen/Gweneth is just a descendant that look alike.

Kinda like how practically every single member of Marty McFly's family looks like him in the Back to the Future sequels. :p

Gatiss seems to deliver better episodes when it's an idea he's brought to the show, rather than when he's given a shopping list by Moffat (Victory of the Daleks, Robot of Sherwood) I think he needs free reign to deliver good quality, hopefully what we'll end up with is more Crimson Horror than Night Terrors...

Ahh, so Capaldi is the one person in Episode 11 but The Doctor isn't the only character he's playing in it.

So not only are they unnecessarily dealing with the whole, "Why does an actor look like himself?" question that's apparently soooo confusing but they're devoting a whole episode to it.

Hooray!

They're finally answering the question that ZERO fans have been asking!

I really don't get why Moffat (and even RTD) felt it necessary to even give this notion the time of day.

The Doctor meets a whole lot of people, he remembers what a whole lot of them look like and when he regenerates the process sometimes uses those remembrances as a template. Job done!

Considering how idiotic RTD's explanation for why Caecillius and Frobisher resemble each other, I'm half wondering if he was just joking. Especially since this contrived and convoluted tale comes only a year after the resemblance between Gwen and Gwyneth was waved away as "space-time multiplicity." Then Moffat went and took the joke too seriously.

Actually, Moffat seems to be taking the piss out of not just actor recycling, but also location recycling too, as a recent interview with Michelle Gomez indicates there is a story reason for why Missy's garden resembles the garden in The Girl Who Waited. I wonder if this explanation is also going to take into account all the other times that location has been used, other DW episodes (most notably the Library story) and several episodes of SJA and Torchwood.

Who knows? Maybe he just had a really good story idea.

This is what I'm hoping for. That it's not a question that needs answering, but that he had such a good story idea that he just had to write it. Here's hoping!

Well RTD made Cardiff the center of a time rift :D

Maybe in the future a new producer will explain the significance of the rock quarry :)

I've always thought it could be neat if Torchwood's Frobisher could be Companion Frobisher, and one day The Doctor could go back and travel with Frobisher for episode or two in Penguin Guise

^Looks like a crossover with Vikings. :)

Australian start date for series 9 is 20 September. Saw an ad on ABC. It didn't give a time slot. Hopefully they simulcast again.

I wish. Just seeing Ragnar's non-verbal reaction to the TARDIS alone would make it worth it.
