Series 9 - Coming September 19! (And a trailer!)

I have been catching up with the franchise this summer. I am finding the episodes from Series 8 more enjoyable without the annoying commercials breaking them up. I am more receptive to the relationship between Clara and the Doctor, and I am more interested in seeing how the relationship will evolve in the next series.

I agree with this. Season 8 has been a lot more enjoyable the second time around. I still have issues with the concept of Danny Pink, but I really enjoy the development of the relationship between Clara and the Doctor.

I rewatched Flatline and liked it more than I did originally (although I didn't hate it originally). But, it only has about 30 seconds of Danny Pink. I'm sure if I watched the one where the trees grow, or where The Doctor is a school janitor, I'd probably hate those as much the second time around. Still, I will probably rewatch the other episodes I thought were good the first time around (like Time Heist or Mummy on the Orient Express).

My general rule for Moffat's run on Doctor Who has been, "Watch it again." Almost every episode that I don't like the first time is infinitely better the second time. I think he has a very deliberate style of storytelling that you don't always pick up on right away.

Commercial breaks are not to the benefit of Moffat's Who. On the one hand, that's not the way his Who was designed to be watched, so it shouldn't be judged because of the commercials. On the other hand, the commercial breaks point out his pacing and structural problems.

Mark Gatiss has a mixed record. He had some successes - "The Unquiet Dead" and the "Crimson Horror"; yet, many of the other episodes were of far lower quality. So, while I don't discount the possibility of him writing a classic, I think it more probable that he will write a good or average script.

Mark Gatiss is actually a pretty decent writer. His only real clunker, IMO was Night Terrors, though Robot of Sherwood certainly has room for improvement. The much maligned Victory of the Daleks gets a pass from me just for its camp value.

I'll admit, when I did my season re-watch last month I did end up being a bit more lenient on episodes I didn't much care for when they aired. Kill the Moon, for example didn't seem nearly as bad as I remembered it. Although, I got to say, Forest of the Night still remains an unbearable way to spend 45 minutes. Seriously this episode actually gets worse on re-watch, and it was pretty damn horrible to begin with!

Well, Kill the Moon being "better than I remembered" still isn't the same as being good, but at least marginal improvement is still more than Forest of the Night has going for it. I think Forest might actually be worse than Fear Her.

Yeah, you might be right. At least Fear Her didn't have Danny Pink it it

For myself, Danny Pink has been the largest blotch on Series 8. I don't know, yet, why the character is so blah!. It might be how the character is written or how the character is portrayed. It could be both.

The second time around, I had the same problems with Danny as I did the first time. Endearing introduction, yet ultimately underdeveloped, so it's hard to care about him when his fate comes around. And his personality conflict with the Doctor STILL makes no sense (and that's both of their faults...Danny and his "Sir! Right away SIR!" and how come the Doctor never said "I was a soldier too."?).

Also never wanting to take an interest in Clara's TARDIS life...that's basic support of your girlfriend. Fail.

Clara lying to him. Fail. Danny giving her relationship ultimatums. Fail.

His only positives were his introductory episode, how he cared about the students, and "Last Christmas."

Flatline was great. Kill the Moon's ending annoyed the living hell out of a me and I have no interest in seeing Forest again.

I don't know why but I have found with modern-Who from series 2 on that the episodes come across better when you watch them the second time. Often I will watch the series live and be unsure about whether or not I liked the episode. But once I know how the series end, and I rewatch on DVD, I can then decide if I like a particular episode or not.

Maybe I am just weird...

"Kill the Moon's" ending is my favorite part of the whole episode! And I love how it was followed up in "Forest."

I watched The Runaway Bride the other day, and I was stunned at how much I liked it. I wish I felt like that when I watching the show on Saturdays.

That said, maybe season 8 will fare better too if I see it again? Who knows...

"The Runaway Bride" is also one of my all-time favorites! I've always been surprised on this board when I find that people didn't like it that much.

I love The Runaway Bride. One of my favourite Christmas episodes, and favourite episodes overall.

it was also the first episode that made heavy use of the theme that the Doctor needs someone to keep him grounded sometimes... *cough*timelordvictorious*cough*
