Serialized storytelling versus episodic

I like that larger stories can be told in a serialized fashion but I do sometimes miss the episodic nature TV used to have. It was nice to have a story be over in 30 or 60 minutes.

I really like serialized shows. The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, The Killing, are some of my all time favorite shows. Building the story, the characters, and their relationships over several hours makes for a much more compelling journey and satisfactory payoff in the end.

I just assumed DSC would be serialized, though I suppose there was no guarantee. And contrary to some, I believe all of the DSC episodes so far, have had discernible beginnings, middles, and endings. It might be that some are unable to perceive this because they know the overall arc won't be completed until the 15th episode.

That's because Burnham unfortunately has the charisma of a wet fart. I haven't seen the actress in other things, but as written and portrayed Burnham not main character material. The real main character should be Tilly. What a journey that would be.

It's the same in everything else the actress has been in.

I think the best description I have seen of her acting skill was "She's wooden".

We've had so much episodic Trek, I'm happy for the change. Unlike DS9 and ENT, they have a 15 episode plan going in so it's not made up as they go along.

So far I'm into it and am eager to see where it goes.

I enjoy both, the serialized and episodic. They're just each best used for different circumstances. I do agree though we all kinda do have to wait to see the shape of this thing to accurately judge it. For instance, couldn't stand Burnham when she mutinied, but her being the only one to give a sh*t about that creature gives her a lot of Star Trek points with me. So, like I said, we have to wait and see where this goes before judging.

Episodic or serialized, it makes no real difference as long as it's enjoyable. A good mix of the two is always preferable to me.

I agree. While the episodes are not stand-alone, each one has been organized like a separate chapter that is structured in a way to differentiate it from the other chapter/episodes.

That is to say, I think it will be a story made of 15 dramatically separated parts instead of it being structured like a continuous 15-hour long movie.

Having said that, while I do enjoy serialized TV, I also enjoy episodic TV in which I can devote 60 minutes of my time and get a full story. And TV shows don't need to be one or the other; it is possible to combine the two styles. Many TV shows have stand-alone stories that are told within the confines of one episode while that episode also taking a little time to advance the over-arching season-long story.
