Section 31: I hope it still happens.

Non-Trek moment...

The Nazi Next Door: How Hitler's Men Found Safe Haven in America by Eric Lichtblau is a really sobering read.

Netflix did a mini-series on one of the men in the book: John Demjanjuk.

The shame is that people like Wernher von Braun didn't hang with rest of them.

Yeah. And arguably her status upon arriving in the Prime Universe is akin to that of von Braun's -- put to use by a democratic state because of special skills they need which they cannot yet easily replicate. Which of course does not justify their treatment, but there we have it.

As @Sci pointed out, with real world precedent, she can be tried in the Federation.

Nobody said she needed to be executed. But she does need to pay for her crimes in some manner.

For whatever it's worth, I do think that she was essentially put on trial by the Guardian of Forever. I suspect Star Trek: Untitled Michelle Yeoh Vehicle will basically feature Mirror Georgiou in a situation where whatever job she ends up in, doing that job is going to be her "sentence" for her crimes. Something akin to how the title character on Angel spent his eternal life trying to save people to make up for his crimes as Angelus.

I wonder why no one got upset with the Guardian of Forever judging her, but are up in arms about the Federation doing it? The Guardian would have no more jurisdiction than the Federation.

And unless the punishment is cleaning up port-o-pots after Taste of Cincinnati for all eternity, then it isn't a proper punishment.

In all seriousness, I doubt there will be any real recognition of her crimes by the shows writers once she's off on her own.

Random thought... if mutiny got Michael Burnham a life sentence, what the hell kind of sentence does the leave for Georgiou? It is just another shortcoming in the writing where they have to take everything to the extreme leaving no wiggle room for future stories.

If the Guardian exists across all timelines simultaneously...

Unless someone in the Terran Empire gave it that power, then it has no more legal jurisdiction than the Mirror Halkans would have over crimes committed.

Unless one subscribes to the 'might makes right' mindset? :shifty:

*shrugs* All I can say is that I'm fine with the Guardian judging her. Arguably it would be better able to perceive the truth of her inner character than a humanoid court.

Honestly if I were the head writer, I would retcon things a bit and reveal that her claims of mass murder and genocide were propaganda and lies used to scare dissidents. She would still have been guilty of some pretty horrible things and still need to redeem herself through her new job, but she wouldn't actually be a genocider. Lighten things up a little bit to make it easier to root for her, and to allow the audience to enjoy Michelle Yeoh's endless charisma.

For me, and I’m only speaking for me, I find this disappointing because the writers didn’t do any real work reforming Georgiou, they just hand waved it away with technology that no one understands.

And it was an awkward use of the Guardian.

She would probably get sentenced to a penal colony and receive special treatment.

I don't agree. I think that Georgiou began to reform as a direct result of being exposed to the Federation's political culture of democracy, restorative justice, pluralism, and equal rights. And as a result of the ersatz family love of Michael -- probably the first time she ever really felt what genuine familial love feels like.

I suppose you could make the same argument that the Prime Directive is morally repugnant. They stand back, literally willing to let entire civilizations perish because it's "the natural order of things." Are the Federation not depriving millions, or perhaps billions of people the chance at life and self-determination simply because they feel they aren't advanced enough?
Actually it's even worse in that often the Federation will give medical supplies & medical technology to both sides in a war. What does that action do? It prolongs the war.

Maybe if you're in a Taste of Armageddon or Battle Lines scenario, but I wouldn't think that was true in general.

A lot of times what I get to do is go up to a troubled teen and explore choices, options and possibilities, rather than just reliving what was modeled to them by parents who decided to model poor choices and behaviors.
I honestly wish someone like you had been available to me when I was a teen.

Ever wonder why so many white conservatives are Star Trek fans?
Yes. Yes, I do. It completely boggles me.

Agreed. Or at least I hope so. I certainly think Michelle is up to the job.

Well, that's my goal is to facilitate more youth and teens to have that available. The biggest thing I have learned about human behavior is that people live out what they are modeled and it takes deliberate work and choice to do things differently. I see the posts of people going "Oh, of course Georgiou knew it was wrong?" and I'm going "How?" Because that behavior was not reinforced to her as being the correct one. Being kind, compassionate, or helpful was not reinforced as a positive. It was seen as weakness. And in a society as hers violence indicated strength. So, you either repeated the behavior or you died.

I suppose at this point it becomes apparent that it is preferable that Georgiou died.

Yep. I turned 54 recently and have just started being able (with medication and therapy) to recognize the terrible behaviors I've fallen back on when stressed/hurt/scared *and* learn to choose differently.

I'd rather see Georgiou, as the (assumed) main character of this show, struggle and work and choose. Maybe that's just me and you. :)

If the writers decide to go that direction, I would definitely give it a shot. But nothing in Discovery to date has given me any hope that they want or are capable of going in that direction.
