Section 31: I hope it still happens.

Shazad Latif Talks Section 31 Series And Why Tyler Was Left Behind In ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 2

https://trekmovie.com/2022/01/11/sh...-left-behind-in-star-trek-discovery-season-2/

When pressed on more details about the spin-off, Latif said he had “no idea” what was going on but acknowledged that Michelle Yeoh is a “very busy woman,” pointing out one of his best friends co-starred with her on the upcoming Netflix mini-series Witcher: Blood Origin.

There's a lot of speaking about the show in the past tense from Latif. Seems he's moved on from the project somewhat, even if Kurtzman hasn't.

Well given Kurtzman is the one running the Production office for the current slate of Star Trek shows; if he hasn't moved on; it will probably still happen at some point as long as Michelle Yeoh is still interested and available.

They have 3 live action shows in production (Two in Canada, one in L.A.) and they've stated they wouldn't be doing another one until one of those 3 end - and that will mostly likely be Picard, as Patrick Stewart signed for 3 seasons, and yes, they could do another contract for a 4th if he's still interested after Season 3 -but there's other stuff he still wants to do (like King Lear); and I'm sure he's aware of his age, so even though he's enjoying it from all reports - he may decide to move on after Season 3.

But like anything in Hollywood (via Canada) - nothing's set in stone until the contracts are signed and the cameras roll.

I'd like it to happen. I just can't help feeling Section 31 will end up as one of the many, many untaken paths in Star Trek history at this point. I think we know Michelle Yeoh likes her part and I'd love to see her back but... Well. Fingers crossed I guess.

As to Picard S4, who knows? I have a feeling they will wind Discovery up first after S5. Time will tell.

I think they want to try and get all their series to the 'magic' 100 episode mark (or close to it).

Terrestrial TV isn't a dead as many would like to think and studios always like to keep their options open to sell content. I mean hell, CBS spent money on making TOS HD (and redoing the optical effects via CGI) because it was still being sold in syndication and they felt they could make money off it for decades to come still - and in fact are.

They've said its happening so I believe that. I wonder if it is simply on the back burner because...

Other things are taking precedent...

When
it gets made isn't that important, like if it takes place in one of the time gaps between series/films. Nothing there is likely to change much...

Simply stalling for time because making the show later is actually better some how... Foreshadowing from other series is required first.... ? 2 cents.

I don't think they are trying to do that with these shows. Streaming is their future so having a solid catalogue of Trek available to stream for new subscribers and new Trek for all subscribers is their goal. TOS was redone over 10 years ago. Bluray sales were still looking like a long term source of revenue like DVDs were. It was released the year Netflix first started streaming. A lot has changed since then, and a lot changed when they were actively remastering the shows. They stopped after TNG for a reason. Also these shows are serial except for SNW, so they don't work randomized on TV.

Agreed. The magic 100 episode thing is supposedly the point where a syndicated show becomes profitable. The newer shows are all about attracting new users to a streaming platform. Success is measured by how many people sign up to watch a particular show. Obviously Star Trek will always pull a fair few subscribers, which I guess makes it valuable.

Paramount says S31 news is "soon"

edit: very interesting line at the end of this one too:

It’s worth mentioning that the portion you quoted isn’t new, it’s from this article/interview conducted a year ago, that they refer to at the beginning of the previous paragraph with “Back in February,” and linked to in the new article, and the statement about new “Trek a quarter” was referring to this last year, and I believe the future as well.

And starting in the next fiscal quarter they debuted the second season of Lower Decks, and there hasn’t been a more than a week with no new Trek since, and with 10 episode seasons (or half season cycles for Prodigy) have a new season of Trek debuting each quarter.

And this is why we don't skim things, kids! Thanks.

@Tuskin38 shared an article in the Strange New World's thread but there is a snip about Section 31:
Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 spin-off — first announced in January 2019 — still has some kind of life to it, at least, as Paramount+’s head of scripted programming Nicole Clemens said earlier today that development continues and some news on that show should be coming “soon,” but still nothing concrete past the it’s-still-alive standpoint.

With nine full seasons of Star Trek still ahead of us, already announced, any Section 31 news will be an interesting surprise — perhaps it’s in line to follow Picard after it departs in 2023, or will end up being some other kind of project separate from the ongoing shows.

We’ll just have to wait and see.

I'm really curious what they're planning for the show. I'm still assuming Strange New Worlds-adjacent Section 31 adventures in tight black leather in black stealth ships. With occasional crossovers and the like.

And presumably Ash Tyler.

I've always hated the idea of an ongoing Section 31 series. S31 are villains; a criminal conspiracy within Starfleet that operates without accountability to the Federation government and regularly creates more problems than they solve. Section 31 is to Starfleet as Hydra is to SHIELD.

If they want to do an espionage show, it should be Star Trek: Starfleet Intelligence and Section 31 should be the recurring bad guys.

To be fair to S31 we've had very limited and onesided exposure to them. We've seen far more rogue Starfleet Admirals than rogue S31 agents, but I don't think anyone would suggest the admiralty is villainous. With a little work they could create a sense of noble purpose for S31 akin to the SCP foundation: We die in the dark so that you may live in the light. Those other guys from before? They were just another example of the few bad apples that the Federation produces.
