It's not just the poster's word, Trekmovie DID claim there could be more as recently as a few weeks ago: https://trekmovie.com/2024/12/31/di...-can-lead-to-more-streaming-star-trek-movies/ .

That being said, this is obvious marketing hype/lies and I agree there won't be anymore S31.
Okay, that is something at least. Thank you for posting that.

However, here is the actual quote from Osunsanmi:
“Hopefully the fans love Section 31 and love this format, and we’re able to continue this format with other stories and be able to expand the universe so much faster, because it doesn’t have to all be television series. It can just be one pop, one pop, one pop. If the audience – the fans – they love it, the sky’s the limit with what we can do… I think I might get into a bit of trouble if I expand upon that. But I think as long as there’s love from the audience, there’s incredible fertile ground that was laid with Section 31 to continue to grow the franchise and grow the world. The door’s open.”

This sounds a lot less like "This is a pilot to a full S31 series" and more like, "We're testing this format to see if we can tell other stories [exact words used] in a single, one-off, tele-movie format that have nothing to do with S31".

Context is for Kings, folks...

They clearly set up the end of the Section 31 movie to allow for more adventures, but that's not surprising. Basically nothing Hollywood does any longer has proper narrative closure, because they always want to hold out the possibility of more if it was a smash hit.

I think the ending would have been way, way more poignant if Georgiou died - hell, if everyone died but Rachel Garrett.
Yes. It's ready made. They can tweak some scripts. Could be another tv movie too though. Should get lots of viewers even if some complain. P+only cares that it was viewed.

I'm really interested in knowing how Kurtzman is going to react to all the negative reviews. Because the concept of TV movies isn't necessarily bad; it's just that the first one they tried was such a dud that it might mar them from making more.

So basically he's just saying what Matalas said about Legacy. That he hopes it will be popular enough to make more, despite absolutely no green-light from CBS/Paramount.
Yes, accurate. Except much more likely than the Matalas Legacy idea, which is all that was, an idea. Completely in line with what I've said.

This is the first time in the Kurtzman era that apparently (haven't looked any up yet) the reviews are not good. All series seasons have had good reviews.

But as I said, reviews won't matter if people stream...and the haters are streaming too. :)

They're not going to continue making something that people are vocal about their disdain for. And people stream stuff all the time that gets cancelled, whether good or bad. So just saying 'people stream' is no indication of success.

And you better believe Kurtman will be reading reviews, and making decisions based on those reviews.

Y'know what this all feels like? This:

Good Lord- that was terrible. I feared it would be a sci-fi action film with Star Trek taped on it, but having little to do with anything Trek. I was hoping to be surprised. I wasn't.

All you've said is that this movie is a 'backdoor pilot' which you are incorrect about.
Everything I said is correct. The only contention is that Osunsanmi isn't going to say the one sentence that this was a planned pilot. He's come partway and said yes we can do more if it does well. He hints at there being more info than that (cant say, wink), and that it can be in the form of movies, but the fact remains it fulfills the function I'm describing of a backdoor pilot.

At some point studio semantics come into play and maybe legalities but...its a backdoor pilot.

Why would they stop producing movies if S31 does badly?

They might not produce any more S31 films, but that shouldn't preclude them from producing streaming movies PERIOD.

I can buy that they hoped there would be enough interest for more Section 31 films, but there's zero chance this was made to pilot a series. After all, this was explicitly changed from a series to a feature because Michelle Yeoh's schedule had become too busy to commit to TV.

Right - the short answer is that it won't stop anything. Like @Dukhat said, one-off tele-movies have been around forever. TOS Battlestar Galactica made it an art form when Glen Larson started assembling multiple existing episodes into larger tele-movies, allowing viewers to see the whole story in one sitting, instead of having to wait several weeks at a time to see how a serialized sub-story of the greater series pans out. It is by no means a new concept, just a new concept for Trek. I find it totally feasible and might help expand the universe without suffering from franchise fatigue.

This is actively fucking insane. That is not how any studio - a money-making entity - operates. Especially one as financially-troubled as Paramount.
Paramount will be merged in 2025. Its debts will be paid. The only division in Paramount Global that makes money is P+. It increases its revenue and subscribers every year.
