Probably because this is a TV movie not a theatrical movie.
A really shitty one, i might add. Empress Georgiou coming back for one special Discoverse special presentation special. Hold your socks folks, this will be even weirder and nonsensical than Disco season 3 and 4 combined..

I've seen the first season. It started out a little rough, but once I got into it, I found it be one of the best first seasons of any Trek and one of the strongest CBS/Paramount Plus Trek series. I wasn't much of a Janeway fan, but I'm more of one now (some of Kristen Beyer's Voyager books also helped in that regard too).

There's only been 1 season, with I think 18 episodes. Season 2 is coming in December.

Good.
I'm surprised they haven't done more Paramount+ Movies. If they can't get a theatrical movie off the ground, I guess P+ is the next best thing.
Theatrical is non-starter for money. Paramount wants to see a better profit.

As much as I like Yeoh I am not sure I need a redemption ark for Space Cannibal Hitler but new Trek is new Trek and I will give it a chance.

Can we, just, like, have a Star Trek spy movie with Michelle Yeoh as the lead character...
portraying a completely new, different character that has fuck-all to do with space cannibalism & genocide?

I adore Michelle Yeoh, but I really am not looking forward to a Section 31 film when we live in an era that tends to glorify militarism and the violation of human rights as being "for the greater good," especially focused on a universe, like Star Trek, where humanity has grown and realized a little bit of "security" is not worth the loss of essential freedoms. It just seems like a regressive step.

Be a little more forward thinking. If Kurtzman wants to make a one off movie about Space Hitler, breaking good, no one should stop him…

We don't know what it is about though? The pitch line is learning making peace with her past sins. Why not explore thta idea?

It's reductionist to me to say it's regressive. We don't know. It could very well be Georgiou learning these methods of security above all don't work, as part of her ongoing character arc. The Mirror Universe humans are described as "the very flower of humanity." And people look down on them, and say "Well, that's not for our Star Trek." Well, then our humanity has no place in Star Trek. We are doomed as an ignoable savage race rather than ever being capable of evolving.

Some sins are so grievous that it is irrelevant if the sinner makes peace with them. She is canonically a genocidal maniac. I'm not saying it's impossible for the writers to sell an arc that makes her a sympathetic protagonist in the face of this but it's definitely a tough needle to thread and even if they do it I'm not sure how this fits into the overall Trek philosophy to the extent it's been made explicit.

Just saying - if my pitch starts with "After Hitler had a change of heart and became a snarky adventurer..."

...

through it in the bin.
No matter how fun it is or how good the actors are.

That is possible, and I will give it a chance, but the likelihood that this is about Section 31 being something that should be abolished is slim. It is more likely to be depicted like most police procedurals in the modern era, in that while there are some "bad apples" who will get caught by the protagonists, the system itself is a force for good.

It's not looking down on someone who gained her power by slavery, bigotry, and a soul crushing environment of fear, along with a dash of cannibalism and heaps of torture and cruelty. If the show was about Adolf Hitler getting a puppy and learning the true meaning of friendship, a lot of people would rightfully have a problem with it. That signifies growth for this "ignoble, savage race," wouldn't you think?

This seems like a compromise - Scheduling for Michele Yeoh and also salary cost for just one movie instead of a full series run.

Though this single movie may give a budget opening for Legacy to be greenlit. There will be a programming void on Paramount.

I haven’t seen it yet, So I can’t actually declare it “shitty”. I will say I’m not a fan of Sec31 or the Emperor in Exile.
