Spoilers Season 4 Trailer

I thought that looked fun. Typical DSC stuff, which I have enjoyed.

I’m a little perplexed that people complain about Star Trek needing to get away from a villain, and here is a season that would appear to be more about surviving a dangerous and mysterious anomaly, and yet people are still upset. I think this has the opportunity to be a puzzle solve/cooperation type of season that I personally have been waiting for.

At this point, I really don’t know what people expect. Star Trek: Discovery isn’t going to have an arc about Saru’s difficulties with an alien necktie or Stamets and Culber arguing over what kind of soup to eat.

I guess I just have to accept that I feel very VERY differently about the franchise than others do.

I think its about that fact that the show just always has some sort of drama, and can’t just engage in Trek exploration. It comes off as big budget blockbuster on tv.

This just seems to be the format for Disco though, so...

So why are they going TNG uniform color codes now instead of TOS uniform color codes? Captain Burnham gets the red shirt? Really? Shouldn't those go to Bryce, Rhys, Nilsson, Detmer, and Owo?

I would like to think there is a version of the Disco crew with the TOS uniform color codes, even if its just a holodeck program…

Considering Coutts, Rapp, and several other Discovery actors play Dungeons and Dragons in real life, I'd rather see the holodeck scenes have Detmer, Stamets and the crew do a Dungeons and Dragons holodeck program. They can even reference Stamets' hatred of Burnham by having him chop up a dungeon boss that looks just like her. And hopefully WB won't send Paramount a nasty letter after this episode the way I heard the James Bond studio did after DS9's "Our Man Bashir".

Here's the thing for me: SO FAR, I'm not a fan of what I'm seeing in that new trailer. But it's unbelievably early, so, show me more before I give my full criticism.

People here know that I absolutely did not like season 3 of the show and felt it was, by far, the weakest.

But as I watched the three trailers for each series, something occurred to me: each trailer perfectly showed off the unique styles for each show and it's clear what Discovery's is: big stakes and lots of action. The writing quality is an entirely different conversation, which I've had far too many times.

This is just what Discovery is and I'm not going to go in on the show angry at what I think it SHOULD be instead of what it actually is.

If you go back and look at the % of TOS episodes that were actually about exploration, and not some kind of crisis....you'd find it's about 20%.

Even the ultimate example of rose-colored Star Trek history, TNG, wasn't much different. Very few episodes that were actually about just exploring new stuff for the sake of science and discovery.

But I think to their point, the drama came out of the exploration. It was finding the unknown and trying to understand it (or combat it).

Perhaps the hardest part of being a part of a long running franchise; accepting that a show is rather than what I wish it would be or should be.

Exactly and that's something that I think is entirely unfair. I'm not going to hate on a show because they aren't doing what I think they should be doing. It's taken me three seasons to realize that this is just where Discovery is. It doesn't mean I'm going to stop watching because I want it to succeed.

At least, what I think succeed means. ;)

I hope they do a better job this season at telling us where all these locations are. It was very confusing in season 3.
I would also like to know how fast their warp is now. I still think them still using that at this time seems a bit antiquated. Would be like use still using coal to power our vessels.

Not sure any of that really matters. They go where they need to go at the speed they need to get there for the plot to work.
If it gets the job done and nothing better has been discovered, why not?

The US Navy has something like 7+ uniforms. Black & white enlisted (more for duty stations than on ship), "dungaree" enlisted (for shipboard duty), black & white dress enlisted, khaki & white (and maybe black?) dress officers. Plus the deck guys on carriers wear an OD jumpsuit I think.

They may have changed something in recent years, but lots of options for any given time and place.

Oh, I’m well aware that most contemporary military services around the world have a variety of uniforms for use in different situations — usually something along the lines of a formal uniform, a working uniform for permissive or non-operational environments, an operational uniform and then a range of more special gear for specific purposes (e.g. flight suits).

I have no problem with Starfleet also having a sensible range if uniforms — even back to TOS, this was always the case.

My comments were more in respect of the assumption that uniforms were for certain postings rather than for a general range of purposes: it never made sense to me that they would have one uniform specifically for ships and one specifically for bases, rather then thinking of them as a dress uniform for formal occasions, a smarter working uniform and a more hands-on utility uniform, any one of which might be appropriate in any location, depending upon the circumstances.

Take theTNG era: the dress uniform obviously is what it is, the TNG duty uniform was more like a service dress and there was the coloured working suit which was then, arguably, replaced by the DS9 jumpsuit which was more like a utility uniform. This then morphed into a more general utility uniform in time of war for the the First Contact evolution of the DS9 utilities (at least in-universe; out-of-universe, they just wanted a new “look” for a new movie and then rolled it out to the relevant TV show).

There’s no reason why the various different forms of uniforms couldn’t be worn on ships or bases as required.

Star Trek has always done a mix of both purpose and posting. Honestly, it could simply be the uniform of the day as ordered by the CO..

Does to me. Makes the universe feels more real. Otherwise it feels like Star Wars.
