Season 3 First Look

No, I normally LOVE her reviews, especially LDS, her joy in it is apparent, but her last couple of vids I've seen, Trek and non-Trek, have been... unhappy. She might be going through something, I really hope not.

It was always odd that Spock was affected, but McCoy and Kirk weren't. It's not like McCoy started acting like a Neanderthal.
Five thousand years isn't that long for humans, even if you discount the Vulcan mass-telepathy theory for why Spock's personality changed. The 27th century BC was in the Bronze Age, well into the development of civilization. Homo sapiens have been more-or-less anatomically modern 200,000 years, and have had the monopoly on the greater human genus for 40,000 years.

Looks like a fun episode, like normal Trek leave your analytical mind at the TV room door.
(turning into a Vulcan should not change your hairstyle or speech patterns, unless that potion had Spockitis in it)

Initial reactions: Love Uhura's new pre-serum hairstyle! Never thought Pike's Peak could get even taller, but the hair department defied physics once again.

Later reaction: I have to agree with Jessie Gender on the content of the scene. I get the comedy the writers are going for, but making his mixed-race heritage the butt of the joke is a serious misstep for a franchise that should damn well know better by now.

Calling it right now.

The serum didn't just make them Vulcan, it made them Spock, in some way or another. Not only did it give them his logical personality, but also all his personal issues, including his internal feelings about being half Vulcan. Hence why they're so hard on him about being half Vulcan. It's because he's so hard on himself. By the end, they'll reach a greater understanding of his inner turmoil through this experience.

Yeah, that sounds like the good version of this episode.

If that actually happens, when the grading thread comes out, it won't get lower than an 8. What we percieve now as Spock being the butt of the joke might end up having a lasting impact for the rest of the crew to stop making him the butt of the joke.

Except the characters refer to themselves as full Vulcan.

I mean, the country she lives in is turning against people like her a lot.

We can just say they represent the Vulcan side of Spock or something.

The writers aren't going to have four of our main characters shit all over Spock for an episode without a reason. I'm just guessing what that reason is. Maybe I'm right, or maybe I'm wrong and they came up with something better.

I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe the serum made them the full Vulcan version of Spock as seen in Spock Amok.
They should really be Pre Surak Vulcans, highly emotional, arrogant, violent, ready for a fight at the drop of a hat. Or be like Tuvok in Voyager when his mental shields were disengaged.

Pike combed his hair with gel while writhing in pain on the floor??? Sorry but this clip is pretty bad imho and doesn't wet my appetite for any more SNW at all. Didn't we have enough silly episodes last season? We get 10 episodes every year and a half or so and we are treated to more goofy stuff ???:sigh:
I'm very disappointed..

With a surprise cameo by Bob Newhart who did this before his passing?

I dunno, it just looks like a level of "fun" I can enjoy and Trek has always in some manner blurred the concept of species versus culture. I'll accept that "somehow" the serum also alternated the personalities to the level of pure Vulcan emotional control, provided the story and arc of the characters has them learning/growing or accepting Spock more in some way by experiencing a Vulcan lifestyle.

Sometimes... Sometimes you have to accept radical plot set-ups and contrivances in order for a story and character arc to happen. Trek has done this from the beginning.

"Oh, the transporter made a passive Kirk and an angry Kirk and they have to be recombined because "passive" Kirk needs that other side of him to be himself.

"Oh, the transporter made them kids so they have to realize the chances they now have, the impacts this has on the current lives and reflect on their previous childhood."

Maybe a this episode we'll see our characters wanting to express their emotions, but realize the intensity of Vulcan emotions and what it takes to control them without breaking out in some level of intensity or violence.

*shrug*

Clip looked good and SNW is the only NuTrek I'm digging so, I look forward to it. It's the only series treading the water of the look and feel of Trek I enjoy. Which, is way I like Voyager more than DS9, though DS9 is better in almost every aspect and has one of my favorite episodes of the franchise. But, I can play a VOY episode and just have more...fun. This episode looks like fun. Can't wait to see it in, what? April or May?

Vulcans gonna Vulcan. Being prejudicial pricks is part of the brand. And a way to comment on that attitude.

Absolutely. But we can still make fun of it and/or dissect it, as we do every nook and cranny of old Trek.

I really like SNW a lot, and look forward to season three. But I won't deny that the show can sometimes lean into itself just a little too hard. I don't think this clip was the best foot to put forward, but it won't stop me from watching and enjoying S3. :)
