Season 1 Blu-ray but no UHD :(

but it’s not a deal breaker. I’m not one of those people who refuse to watch anything pre-HD.

I will always choose HD/4k over DVD quality if I have the option. But I don’t go ‘eww’ if I only have SD quality as an option, I won’t complain.
Yeah, I when I watch DS9 or VOY I notice the SD softness for about 30s then get engaged with the story and no longer notice/care.

What I've found most annoying is when a show is initially released on Blu ray but then the producer switches to DVD-only for later seasons.

Same. My only other gripe is when the DVD version is far softer than it needs to be, or is crammed onto fewer discs than it really needs. If you won't give me a Blu-ray option, why are you borking the DVD? (One example of getting double-screwed was Vice Principals. Only season one is on Blu, and the season two DVD has worse PQ than it should have.)

That's weird, though, right? I can't speak for other countries, but in the US, high-definition television sets had reached 80% market penetration back in 2015 (based on some quick Google searches). It has to be somewhere near 100% today. You haven't been able to buy a standard definition television set for many years now. Blu-ray disc players have been available new for under $100 for years. And yet, even here, new shows all get DVD releases along with Blu-ray. That's kind of mind-boggling.
You should look on the comments on Amazon.co.uk with some of these TV shows are released on DVD "I'm not buying this in SD, when I watched it first time in HD on my TV. I'll wait for the Blu-Ray." which invariably never comes.

Im guessing that the previous seasons didn’t sell well enough to justify the cost.

^I don't know, but ironically when I've found out about such things I've usually halted further purchases of the series in question (Glee in particular comes to mind, where A/V quality is important). I have a 50" TV and I can see the quality drop between DVD and Blu ray, and while I accept it if a series was only released on DVD, I have no interest in encouraging a downgrade.

There is absolutely nothing I despise more than upgrade treadmills. (Yes, an unusual attitude for somebody who makes his living writing software.)

I will say that Monday evening, while my dad was watching Monday Night Football in the living room, I turned on a DVR recording I hadn't gotten to of my favorite team sport, in the kitchen, while putting dinner together (Curling*, the Women's Bronze Medal Game from the Beijing Winter Olympics), and in the intro, they had a flyover shot of the ice, and you could actually see the pebbled surface. That was impressive. But after dinner, I saw the rest of the game on my old CRT TV, and it wasn't any less enjoyable. (Sweden beat Switzerland.)

Given that (1) I do most of my recorded-television watching on screens that are either small or low-resolution, and (2) the only BluRay machine in the house is an early model that takes several minutes to mount a volume, I'm sticking with DVDs, for the most part. I have a couple of movies on BluRay, but that's all, so far.

Luddites of the world unite! You have nothing to lose but your upgrade treadmills!

*Curling may (on paper) look like a bizarre combination of shuffleboard, lawn bowling, and janitorial work, but if you actually watch it, you realize that it's almost like chess played on pebbled ice. Right down to being timed almost like a chess game.

I'm surprised that we still don't have a release date yet. Since my parents don't stream I was planning on getting this for them as a Christmas gift. But I'm not ordering until I know for sure it can be purchased in time. And I won't be purchasing any of these for myself until paramount gets with the program and releases these on 4K.

It will likely be released shortly before season 2 airs, so we’re probably looking at sometime in March.

That doesn't make any sense from my perspective. Why not release during the holiday season when everyone is out shopping? Oh well. Guess I'll buy my folks something else and hold off on that until birthdays.

Physical media is seen more and more as a niche market. The fact they are still releasing a physical copy kinda surprises me. They would much rather get you to subscribe to their streaming platform.

Yeah, it would make sense, but that's how they've done the releases for all of the streaming shows so far. Probably has something to do with what @HotRod mentions, maximizing the amount of time that it's only available via streaming.

If Paramount didn't think they could make a decent profit from releasing the Blu-Rays of their various Star Trek series, they wouldn't do so. Everything with respect to that is based on ROI (Return On Investment). That's the main thing that drives these type of decisions. Obviously I guess 4K versions haven't sold as well as they like, so they don't bother to sell them.

I say that because if they did they'd both be released at the same time, as no it doesn't make sense to not have a 4K version available to be sold for the Christmas holiday season.

I get the mindset, but it won't work for people who have no interest in streaming. My folks don't stream and they never will so all companies like Disney are accomplishing is guaranteeing that they will never see their tv shows. It really doesn't make sense for shows like Mandalorian or Wandavision because anyone that wanted to check them out on Disney plus has done so by now. They won't lose anything by releasing them on home video at this point and would make a killing from people like me who want to buy it for friends or family. But that's Disney's loss. At least I can still buy new Star Trek.

I mean this in the nicest possible... People like your parents don't matter anymore to large corporate media companies. They would rather pretend people like that didn't exist.

They want you plugged into a montly subscription, where you're likely to keep paying, month after month, regardless of the content. Selling a few thousand DVD's is miniscule compared to what they make streaming to millions. It's hardly worth the effort.

It's the same across most media. New cars don't even come with CD Players anymore. Why? Everyone has Spotify or Apple music. Physical media might not be dead, but it's dying.
