Scribble's scribbles

Only a minor update...3d printer(s) on the way. :)

One (FDM) has a pretty decent build volume of 12"x12"x16"

The other is a resin printer for detail work. 47µm resolution.

I can't wait to have my own (physical) Refit bridge! Now to clear out at least 3.6-feet square in my basement.

Another thing I've realized we've never had are engineering figures in their rad suits. Might need to remedy that situation.

My printers have been here for a while, but I haven't been able to set them up due to reasons.

My resin printer, still in its sealed box:

I'm pretty confident I can get all control panels done on this printer. As I said, it has a resolution of 47µm, which is .047mm. Not perfect, and certainly better exists, but with a minimal amount of cleanup, this printer should do just fine for small marts and buttons and controls. It's also the printer I plan on using for action figures.

My second printer is a Creality CR-10 (blue). Supposedly it has a minimum layer thickness of .05mm, but I would need to get a different nozzle than what it comes with. That one, as I mentioned, has a build volume of 300mmx300mmx400mm, or around 12"x12"x16". I'll do larger set pieces for action figures with this one. I need to perform a few upgrades on it like giving it a dual-z-axis and filament sensor, as well as adding automatic bed leveling and a mirror build surface.

As soon as I start earning some extra money with these printers I'll begin working on building an even bigger DIY printer and possibly a milling machine and lathe.

My chairs are definitely on the docket with these printers. The difference is that they'll be articulated (swivel), unlike the ones I have on Shapeways that are static.

I was only going to do AA/DST-style 1:10-scale figures as far as Trek goes, but it sounds like I may need to do some of the missing figs from the Playmates 4.5" line. I just wish I didn't hate their hip joints so much (spread wide!).

I'll have this house to myself soon. I know I've been saying that for a while, but now it's becoming a reality. My housemate will be moving out as soon as they can. I'm so ready for that as I get performance anxiety in front of anyone with whatever I'm doing, including modeling or drawing, so that has been the main reason for my lack of 3d work for the last several months. I expect stuff to come flying out once I no longer have that barrier.

My ULTIMATE goal with 3d modeling and printing is to do what some consider the impossible (or very improbable) and that's build a studio scale Refit Enterprise. Yup, 100-inches long. Eight-foot, four-inches with a four-foot saucer.

So, all that aside, can anyone suggest a good Trek Toys FB group or external forum?

After a LONG hiatus from modeling (way too long), I'm back.

Up for show is my interpretation of @Cyfa's amazing Alt-Trek TWOK Rank Pins. I noticed the Commander rank their avatar and asked if they'd done an entire set and if it would be okay for me to model and render them. I was met with an enthusiastic A-OKAY.

This edge style is my favorite of the three (Shown is Lt. Commander)

Thank you. I was inspired by @Cyfa's design. I had to go back to the 2012 version of my software to get it done, but it turns out that nearly all fo the tools were there, even then. :techman:

Y'know, this has me thinking...I wonder how an Alt-Movie-Era-Trek would look. Uniforms, ships, weapons, and devices. Everything.

I'll be perfectly honest, I'm a better "copycat" artist than a true "designer" and I would love it if some people would put forward some sketches that I might take inspiration from and model with the hopes of eventually printing them. As with Cyfa's designs here, I can interpret designs that I see in various ways (Cyfa had no idea I'd do the pillow-embossing on style #1) and I'd love to have at it.

Any takers?

Does anyone else use a multitude of helper objects while they're modeling?

Is there a preferred edge-style between these? There are five different styles for both Commander and Lt. Commander.

The difference here is subtle, but the gold bars are slightly rounded in this one:

Here's a better idea of what the different edge styles are. I'm partial to Style #1 with the rounded bars.

You've done an absolutely brilliant job with these, @Scribble - Stunning! The way you've brought Robert Fletcher's designs - and my redesigns (love the pillow-embossing) - to life is just amazing! I shall be sketching away at more redesigns this weekend, now ;)

Very Awesome :)

Thank you, @Kaiser!

Awwww, shucks. :D As I said in your thread, thank you for the inspiration. :)

I look forward to seeing what you come up with!

Turns out I got lucky with my first attempt at lighting a scene without lights (HDRI imaging); it's a little more finicky than I'd thought. I'm finding that there's a LOT more color bleed from the image, itself, and I'm needing to adjust the color-temperature and exposure. I did none of that for the above images (an interior space was lighting the scene). Also, matching the render exposure to the background is proving to be trying, at best.

Yes, IRL I played a Gaffer's Spark for about a year, but honestly, I was horribly at it. I found out that's not where I want to be in the moviemaking universe.

[EDIT] With a little bit of post-processing in PS:

I spent too many hours yesterday messing with getting the exposure right that I didn't have any time to model further ranks. I also slept for 18 hours today, so I'll be up all night working on the rest of the Officer pins.

It turns out that my cat wanted attention for much of the night, so I didn't have ad much time to work on this as I'd hoped, but it also went way slower than I was thinking it would. Lots of fiddly stuff, and lots of changes after seeing the results. All I was able to do was the Captain (and Fleet Captain), but I'll get more this morning. The Admirals will be SUPER easy now.

Of the Fletcher insignia, I think styles #3 and #4 are closer to the originals (I've been looking at loads of screencaps on trekcore.com ;)), but after much dithering between #1 and #5, I think my favourite is now #2!

I have Commander and Captain insignia made from the same person and molds as the ones made for the movies, and they're pretty boring (and rough), and not nearly as thick or ornate as my renders, even #4 & #5.

For me, it's a tossup between #1 & #2. The last image wa #1. I'll re-render with #2 next.

I still think the (my) perceived value lies in Style #1, but I'll leave that to y'all to determine.

Style #2:

These are amazing. I've always liked the TWOK uniforms and rank insignia, even though they are a total departure from everything that came before and after. You've really done a great job with these.
