Screen Rant article ranking every Trek series

Just in general I like to say that I’m one of these fans that pretty much finds something to like in all of the shows, even if I might rank them differently in overall quality for a tier list like this. I’ve found and can still find enjoyment in all of the shows. At the end of the day a series will always win me over with its characters. And I simply find something to love about all of the main characters in Trek. Even on a show like Picard, that I found so incredibly dull and stupid at so many times … I still grew to love the characters they created and the people that are portraying them.
I think that's the hardest part of tiered lists or numerical lists. Like, I don't care that much about different shows to say "oh, this one is obviously lesser than the other." That misses the nuance of the fact that generally speaking I can find things to enjoy in every single show, even the lower tiered ones. Why? Well, because usually the characters do something I find interesting or manage to do something that is unexpected or unpredictable. For instance, I don't rank Voyager very high but every single Tuvok episode, aside from exceptions because there always are, is one that I find incredibly enjoyable.

It's more nuanced, and the list attitude misses that detail.

Definitely. Which is why I try to not take stuff like this too seriously. This is just some harmless fun, nothing more. And as I said, I prefer creating these kind of lists, because they at least allow to put several items on one level, whereas in a regular ranking I would have to put each item on one single level, making it much harder and less accurate to how I feel about the shows.

Indeed, yes, this way seems to get closer to more nuanced.

I like this tiered system, idea. :bolian:

For me it's all about how much I enjoy the characters compared to stuff that irritates in the show, so:

However, just to muddy the waters, what irritates me most is not necessarily the same for each show, it could be dodgy writing or bad continuity or even the soundscape (as in TAS). :ouch:

Nice! Doesn’t look all that dissimilar from mine. Had no idea you liked Prodigy this much! :)

Here's mine, I rated the shows on enjoyment and rewatchability. That's one if the reasons DS9 is a bit lower than probably expected, it's a very good show but the serialized nature makes it harder to rewatch.

TNG is my absolute favorite, no contest.
Voyager, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New World and Discovery are all a lot of fun. Prodigy and Disco also have a slightly lower rewatchability factor due to serialization but they are shorter than DS9 and in Disco's case the arcs are restricted to one season each which makes it easier to handle
DS9 would be in A based on enjoyment but several long arcs make individual episodes less rewatchable because they only work as part of the whole so it ended up in B, that's still a good category though. Picard is strange, I would have put season 1 ain B or C, season 2 in D and season 3 in S so it kinda evened out and got a B even though I hate season 2 with a passion.
TOS is meh. I know it started it all but I honestly don't enjoy it that much, there are some all time classic episodes that I genuinely like but as a whole it's just not my cup of tea.
TAS and Enterprise I do not care for at all.

The Hageman Brothers must work on my frequency, I'm a fan of their Tales of Arcadia series, too.

I love a show with a lot of heart. :adore:

I was literally just thinking the other day how tough it is to give a linear ranking of these shows for me. I almost feel 2 lists, before Kurtzman and after is easier.
But this tiered thing was interesting when I gave it a go, didn't try to think too much, just put them where they felt appropriate to me. And surprised myself a bit!
Since I don't know how to upload the image, text it is:
S - TNG
A - SNW, Enterprise, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy
B - Discovery, DS9
C - TOS
D - Voyager, TAS

A list designed for the sole purpose of making me have to once again point out The Orville is REAL Trek I see. Well I will do that. Anyways here is the REAL list.

1 TOS
2 The Orville
3 TNG
4 SNW
5 DS9
6 Picard
7Prodigy
8Enterprise
9Voyager
10Lower Decks
11 Discovery
12 TAS

Are those of us ranking TOS including the TOS movies with it? It’s funny because I do, and yet when I think of TNG I usually don’t think of the movies.

According to Wikipedia: “'S' tier may stand for "Special", "Super", or the Japanese word for "Exemplary" (秀, shū), and originates from the widespread use in Japanese culture of an 'S' grade for advertising and academic grading.” :)
Also used in dancesport: You start at D, compete at the national level in A, then internationally in S.

Looking at their list, I'd say VOY is certainly above TOS for me, and I'd put PRO above LDS, and DIS below those.

But here's my ranking based on averages of all episodes (but a year old):

Good to bad: LDS & PRO (tied), PIC, MOV, SNW, TNG, DIS, VOY, ENT, DS9, SHO, TOS, TAS

Surprised DIS is that high up, would've put VOY and DS9 before that.

Best of the Best
TNG - Sure it has a rough beginning, and sure it has a bit of a rocky ending, but I still think it has some of best premises in the series. I think this has the perfect mix of wonder and awe mixed with good world building and good ideas. I'm a sucker for very "sci-fi" premises, and I think this show has the best of them.

Excellent
DS9 - I definitely appreciate DS9 now a lot more than I did growing up. The inclusion of ideas about religion, war, and society have stood the test of time and I think it's one of the more rewarding shows to watch now, especially in a world where season-long arcs are the norm.

ENT - I love Enterprise, I don't care what people think. I think the set design is a big factor in that. I really think they nailed the half-space ship half-submarine aesthetic, and I like the time period that it's set in. Don't get me wrong, there's some hot garbage in there, particularly in the first season or two. However, the season 3-long arc was a step in the right direction, and I think the focus on multi-part episodes in the last season was a really great storytelling technique. If I could make any executive Star Trek decision, it would've been to give Enterprise a season 5, easily.

Great
TOS - Frankly it's been a while since I've watched much TOS, so if I had, it very well might have gone higher. As it is though, it's a certified classic. Upon rewatching, it's always surprising to me how many well known and well regarded episodes they had in just their first season alone. It established arguably not only a franchise but an entire TV style. Granted, some of the cost saving measures (filming on company backlot sets, reusing Nazi uniforms for the 5th time) hasn't aged well, and that last season tanked pretty hard.

LD - I'll admit that I didn't like LD at all when it premiered, and to be honest, I don't find the first season or so all that good today. It leans too hard into the nostalgia and name dropping that it didn't feel like it had an identity for itself. I'm pleased to say that recent seasons have reversed that trend and I feel the characters have really come into their own. They're now able to push their own characters forward rather than relying on what came before, and it's shown some of the best modern storytelling.

Good
SNW - This might be a little unfair, as I actually really like SNW. However, I didn't feel like it was on the same level as TOS or LD, simply because they have yet to have an episode that has really wowed me. They've had a few really solid episodes, but haven't had their version of Measure of a Man or Duet yet. That isn't for a lack of trying though, and I think this show has a lot of potential to become something great

VOY - I don't know what it is about Voyager, but I always just find it to be "okay". I think part of the issue was that they really standardized how a Federation starship should look, but that led to a lack of visual style, or perhaps worse, a lack of variety. They picked up two hitchhiker aliens in the first episode, but no other Delta quadrant species seems to want to join the crew. They're trapped with the knowledge that they'll likely die on that ship, at the very least from old age, but that's not really a growing concern. It's a show set in the Delta Quad, but could've been set around the block from TNG.

Oh no
TAS - I've seen like one episode of TAS one time, and it was okay I guess.

PIC - I never really thought this show was a good idea even from the get go, so I guess I wasn't super disappointed when it turned out to be a bit of a mess. There were some interesting ideas in there, like exploring the consequences of the Romulan supernova or what becomes of ex-Borgs, but it all felt so mean spirited. Everyone is mad at Picard for things that weren't his fault and frankly even when he made the right decisions. I've still never seen season 2, I'll admit, due to the poor ratings it got, and even though season 3 was definitely a step up, it was still a mess. Everything I liked about TNG, the sense of wonder, the visual style of the future, its people, were all gone.

A Hot Mess
DIS - I really dislike everything about this show. I don't like the sets, I don't like the acting, I don't like the plots, I don't like the character development, everything about this show is awful. I think the worst part about it is how it doesn't even feel like it belongs in the same universe. PIC, for all its faults, at least tries to fit in with the established galaxy. SNW manages to execute this well, but DIS never does, and I think it's a string of horribly written plots where their own writers forget to resolve the initial mysteries by mid-season. Even though it's ending, it's still around long enough to bring us a movie with my least favorite recurring organization in the franchise combined with one of its worst characters. Hazzah.

PRO - I haven't seen it, so I'll put it on the end here.
