Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Discussion Thread

I'm not sure if "self-centered" is quite the right word for it. Yeah, he doesn't consider the effects his actions have on others, but there's a certain level of contempt for other people I feel that implies, and Scott's usually a pretty nice guy. He's just really irresponsible about the consequences that his actions have on his friends. "Feckless" seems better to me.

Yes, Scott Pilgrim's problem, the root of his character arc, is that he begins the story utterly deficient of feck.

I suppose self-centred gives it a bit more of a negative edge than it really deserves, but he doesn't give consideration to how his actions effect other people beyond himself. And his actions with Knives and the way he acts, "You were saying about me?", definitely does make him seem more self centred than unthinking.

Thinking it over overnight I've given the movie a bit more thought and reconsidered my, somewhat, harsh take on it. It was still average for me but in reflection the "style" of it was less annoying and seizure-inducing. Ok, it still kind of was, but I appreciated the "different-ness" of it. Just that it being so goofy and off-the-wall made it harder for me to reconsile this as being "part of the real world."

But the overall style of it was still kind of neat. There were just few characters I cared about and even to me it seemed like there were entire plot-threads missing. Like I'm not sure the history with his most recent ex (the "rock star") was fleshed out in the film enough or fully and, frankly, just seemed needless.

Eh, of all the ways to waste two hours I guess this movie wasn't a terrible way to do, I enjoyed it, but I wasn't in the mood for it's off-beatness -nor expecting it to be so off-beat- and not having a main character I cared about hurts it. Fun movie, might give it a re-watch on TV or DVD.

The comic is much more fleshed out, but that's what you'd expect given that it's 6 200+ page volumes versus an under 2 hour movie, so there are a lot of cut down, changed or completely missing plot threads and backstories.

^ Which is why after viewing the adult swim animation that I think it would have been served better as either an television series adaption or an animated film adaption. Seeing animated comic Scott with Michael voice over was outstanding. Same with Allison as Kim Pine.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the comics. I could tell a lot was left out, and things make a lot more sense in context. And if people thought the movie was weird, the comic is even weirder in terms of the reality-bending stuff.

I'll definitely be getting it on DVD, though.
