Scott Bakula's Take on the New Movie & Fan Reaction

~LOL~ Like I said - I'm from Philly. You should see the state of Eagles Fandom after years of no Superbowl wins... to us, that's just normal. We'll bitch the crap out of the team.

..but just let some outsider say somethin'... ~grin~ They may be idiots, but they're Our idiots. Same thing goes for ENT, I think.

I actually liked the pop-song theme for Enterprise - I don't know why some fans insist that every show run as essentially a clone of there shows. ENT is not DS9, and that is a good thing.

What I didn't like about the song is how they changed it in the third season and gave it all that wall of sound crap. It was better without the ridiculous beats.

I think the whole theme SONG concept was a frightening anomaly. ENT was expected to be an action/adventure show - I think it may be the only show of its genre ever to have a song for a theme. Unless you count "The Greatest American Hero." It's akin to having the "A-TEAM" theme for "Three's Company." Or "Star Wars" for "Kramer VS Kramer."

Generally, theme music is supposed to set the tone for the series - ENTs choice sent some seriously mixed signals, for generations that grew up feeding off the tube. It doesn't speak for the quality of the show itself, but it was jarring in the sense that it went against convention. I'm willing to bet that even in a scholastic sense, ENT's theme would be considered a case study in what not to do.

Would of been interesting if Bakula could have made a cameo in the movie. Hasn't it been mentioned somewhere in the reviews since the news of what scenes were seen in the move that Scotty mentioned making a new transporter and he accidently transported an Admiral's dog, meaning Archer and Porthos?

Actually I kind of liked the song from the series and I have found a new take on it made by someone that is doing a CGI verison of Enterprise. I wish I could remember what site it was but I can't right off.

For me the theme was a perfect metaphor for all the crap I'd put up with from non fans for my being a Trekkie. (hated when they added the beats too)

Anyway, Scott may have a point about teens not caring about this flick. I know a couple who, like his son, also aren't as enthusiastic about it as the studio may think they all are/will be.

Gee, not even the mods seem interested in sticking to the topic.

this thread is somewhere in galaxy M33, not really the mods' fault tho

The topic is Bakula's quote. We've been dealing with that. He brought up the 'No Slack. We're dealing with that. He brought up the theme. We're dealing with that. I'm not sure what you would want this to be other than a non-post entirely: it's a quote. either you riff with it, or there's no discussion at all.

Yes. There's some discussion about using the transporter during a key scene. Simon Pegg makes a comment about Admiral's Archer's beagle not being so fortunate and how he'll hopefully still turn up. So basically another sarcarstic in-joke at Enterprise's expense. Not unlike a recent Futurama DVD where a line of dialogue went: "Way to kill the franchise, Bakula!"

I would've welcomed seeing Scott (even in heavy old age latex), there to see this landlocked Enterprise take flight. Something alluded to onscreen in the U.S.S. Defiant computer screen from "In A Mirror, Darkly Part II"... supposedly the fanon derived launch date of 2245, now shifted forward for the convenience of introducing so many TOS characters all at once.

I liked that they tried to do something different with Enterprise's theme. I was tired of generic orchestral pieces.

There was also Firefly.

Actually, that fact about Archer witnessing the launch of the TOS Enterprise never made it on screen in In a Mirror Darkly. The script called for it, but it was not in the finished TV show.

Here's what memory-alpha.org says:
"Although it did not appear on-screen, the final section of the bio would have revealed that Archer dies in 2245, one day after attending the christening ceremony of the USS Enterprise, the first Federation starship to bear the name."
Here's what that episode's writer originally intended the bio on the screen to be:
http://web.mac.com/mike.sussman/mikesussman/IAMDArcherbio2.html
but the final paragraph was omitted/replaced in the final filmed version of the episode.

Here's that bio as it appeared on-screen:

It contains no mention of the TOS Enterprise or Archer's death.

Even the ENTERPRISE hater that I am? I think that would have been cool...

But let me say this; I have nothing against the cast of that show at all. They were let down by what was going on behind the camera; IMO

I like Bakula. He's a class act.

Yep.

Bakula didn't say a thing that wasn't true.

I get a big kick out of the fans who thought that if "Enterprise" failed then the studio would somehow go back, poll the fanbase and having learned their lesson deliver a next series or movie more-or-less tailored to Trekkie specifications. Idiots.

What can I say - I'm from Philly. We calls 'em like we sees 'em.

I've been to Philly too many times - the whole town needs new glasses.

Enterprise had more than it's fair share of clunker episodes, but some were pretty good -

Broken Bow
The Andorian Incident
Dear Doctor
Carbon Creek
A Night In Sickbay
Regeneration
The Expanse
Impulse
Twilight
Carpenter Street
Doctor's Orders
E2
Zero Hour
The Forge
In A Mirror, Darkly

And in the end, if we're all honest, new episodes of Enterprise were better than no new Star Trek at all.

As for Bakula's take on the fans... spot on I think.

Clooney good naturedly admits to killing off the Batman Franchise for years - I'd much prefer to see Bakula say something along the lines of "Maybe we shouldn't have had so many Time-Nazi-Aliens..."

In the same breath he also claims credit for The Perfect Storm, but it sounds like you want it to be taken gravely seriously. Whatever floats your boat.

Scott Bakula is one of the down-to-earth, fun class acts of the business. Not seeing him on weekly television in new adventures(either Trekking or Leaping)just royally sucks.:p I hope Jonathan Archer and/or Sam Becket return someday.

There May have been fans that felt that way; personally, by the time I was fed up with the whole franchise, I could've cared less whether there was another series. I had serious Trek fatigue.

DS9 was rough for me, because of they were essentially stuck in one place, and I really found the Bajorans as boring as all get out. Ghosts of the Pah! Let me touch you like Mork, so I can read your Pah. Vic Fontaine. The Loveable Ferengi. The Dominion was an entirely manufactured threat combining the Klingons and the Borg. With the exception of the Dominion, Starfleet did right just using DS9 as a resupply and getting on with more exciting stuff. The Cardassians - and especially Dukat - were the real gold that came out of that series.

Voyager, like I said, had Space 1999 syndrome. And frankly, I had a tough time with a lot of the characters. The command characters were Not strong - Tuvok may have been OK, but he had no one to play off. The secondary characters ended up carrying the series.

So, by the time ENT came around, the franchise was pretty boiled down For Me. I had hopes, but I had already dealt with years of what I considered meh, and wasn't prepared to eat too much more cardboard. I may be a fan, but that doesn't force me to be a homer. The Temporal Cold War and the Expanse was enough for me.

The upcoming movie is in the same place as ENT was, for me - I have high hopes, and I'll be disappointed if it sucks. But I'll never put myself in the position I was in when I first watched STTMP, trying desperately to like it even when "SUCK" is written all over it, just because it carries the brand name.

Does Pegg/Scotty actually use the name Archer?
