Sarah Jane Adventures: Series 4

Except it isn't actually a sexual reference. Clearly you have your own issues if you think it is.

Plus in the context of British TV it's barely even a reference. Hollyoaks is on only an hour later with a big childrens audience and has gay storylines pretty much non stop and is more explicit in terms of all sexuality than nearly any other programme broadcast before 9pm in this country.

Plus Grange Hill and Byker Grove used to address these issues and far stronger ones, and they were shown after Newsround and before Neighbours - so between 17:10 and 17:25.

Good point - I'd forgotten Byker Grove despite watching it every week when I was younger!

There's also As If which used to be shown Sunday morning/early afternoon - as is the Hollyoaks omnibus come to think of it.

I don't remember As If. I do remember watching Grange Hill for years, they focused on drugs, being gay, sex in general all sorts of "adult themes." Didn't watched it for years and then watched a few of the last series and it was watered down rubbish. Complaining about any form of sexuality in Sarah Jane or Doctor Who to me just seems stupid and given what CBBC used to broadcast, pretty backwards.

^CBBC's remit covers 6-16 year olds, I think 16 is definitely old enough to be exposed to sexual themes as well as drug use, since 16 is the age of consent.

And let me be very clear: I don't care if you're gay, straight, dumb, smart, whatever.....if it's a children's show, leave out the sexual references and sexuality of characters. It's not media's place to expose a child to such things. :techman:

Naturally, then, you object to the depictions of Ariel and Prince Eric falling in love in The Little Mermaid? And to WALL-E's and EVE's relationship in Wall-E? And to depictions of Batman and Catwoman kissing in Batman: The Animated Series? And to Shrek and Princess Fiona choosing to get married and have children in the Shrek series? And to Mowgli choosing the village girl over Bagheera and Baloo in the finale of The Jungle Book? And to Prince Phillip's kissing Princess Aurora in Sleeping Beauty? To Kim and Ron becoming boyfriend and girlfriend in Kim Possible? To Princess Jasmine's very revealing costume in Aladdin? To Spider-Man and Mary-Jane being in a relationship in the Spider-Man TV series for kids? To Helga having an unrequited crush on Arnold in Hey Arnold? To Johnny always hitting on women in Johnny Bravo? To Miss Piggy being in love with Kermit the Frog on The Muppet Show?

After all, those are all depictions of sexuality. We wouldn't want to see that in children's stories.

Folks in the US seem to forget that its mainly just us and parts of the middle east who think 'gay = dirty, disgusting, and evil'.

Romance and sexuality are two different things. But, you're not interested in facts. Just in finding any avenue you can to preach your indignance.

Wild. That's a strange fact to bring up in the discussion, though, since no one has said anything about anything being "dirty, disgusting, and evil"...

Romance and sexuality are two different things.

In other words, it's okay when it's straight people because then it's "romance." But if identical behaviors are depicted using same-sex couples, then suddenly it's "sexuality" rather than "romance" and is therefore bad.

Well, considering that thats where the discussion seems to be headed. Whether gay references are appropriate thing to be mentioned in a kids program. Obviously people in the UK aren't really bothered by it. Whereas over here it seems to be a big deal.

Oh. Nah. As far as I'm concerned, the discussion is over. I've said everything I'm going to say on the subject. Sci will hear what he wants, and see what he wants. I've learned not to bother repeating myself too often... :techman:

I'm with you on this one, I don't see why kissing between boys and girls is "romance" and fine, yet the mere mention of the word gay is "sexuality" and therefore not fine...

Well now we've got Russell and Matt Smith out of the way again, can those of us who watch SJA all the time get back to discussing the ongoing series :)

What did people think of this week's? I really liked it. Very simple but effective set up. A wonderful explanation for why Clyde and Rani were unaffacted, proof that they can hold their own, on their own without Sarah/Luke/Mr Smith/K9. I thought the nature of the threat was quite inventive, and after the somewhat dissapointing Shansheeth, I thought the robots were quite effective. Be cool if they got a paint job/bit of a referb and ended up in Who. The only quibble I have is that things seemed to resolve themselves a bit too neatly, also the actor playing Gavin wasn't the greatest. On the whole though I liked it, and the uncomfortable flirting between Clyde and Rani was actually very sweet.

Seriously though Rani's dad ain't stupid, sooner or later he's going to need letting in on the secret (if only for the amusement of him realising the 'useless' Langer boy is actually quite the hero.)

Hm. A nice pair of episodes this week again - bugger all actually *happened* for most of it, but it was a good character piece for Clyde (who could definitely hold a show of his own) and Rani (who was at her best here). The truth about what was going on was rather cheesy, but it was a good low-key story with actual depth.

8/10 again! Four good ones in a row- that makes this the best season to date already...

I really enjoyed it - nice to get a break from Liz Sladen's over emoting for a week to be honest.

Yes the resolution was a bit too easy but great performances from the leads - I was almost disappointed when the other characters returned! I wasn't expecting them to acknowledge time had passed - it does look like things may change soon regarding how much Rani's parents know about whats going on.

Definitely the best series so far and next week also looks great.

That was a sweet little story. And nice to see Rani and Clyde getting some much needed character development.

I get the feeling that things are going to come to a head with Rani's dad very soon now.

If they can hold things together for the next two weeks, we might just have the best series ever.

I liked this story, quite a bit actually, I thought the empty streets were used very effectively and I found Clyde and Rani more natural than usual. I think Clyde wouldn't have minded a couple of more weeks with Rani as the only people on the planet before resolving this one.

I was going to make a joke about Clyde's hormones being responsible for a whole race of inbred British, but then I remembered all the existing jokes about the royal family. :P

Not bad, but IMO not much happened this week. Clyde and Rani basically spent three quarters of the story running around and wondering what was going on. They DID eventually solve the riddle and it was a great reincorporation of a previous plot point (two, if you count the biodamper), but it was almost too simple by literally removing anyone who could be a red herring or other diversion. Still, it got some decent characterization in for the two of them and I liked the resolution.
