Sarah Jane Adventures: Series 4

Having watched it again with Lesley now that she's back from work, I caught the line about the other people at the funeral being old soldiers.

Something I meant to say: Clyde continues to be fucking great - I loved his "man I'm running out of reactions!" and "shuffle for your life!" Jo... Jo just wasn't Jo, really. That was Katy, not Jo. Still fun though!

But Joi was always Katy, so why should that be any different at...ah, 57 than 21?

Who didn't have Alien Bodies running in the back of their mind?

I swear, at times I've thought that RTD sleeps with Lawrence Miles' oeuvre beneath his pillows at night...

At first I thought Santiago (which really is a great name) might be Jo's boytoy!

Never trust a vulture around the dead!

Here is a sneak preview of the next episode as Jo is captured by the vulture aliens:

It has to be an in-joke by now, but what is up with all last the names of either Smith or Jones in the Dr Who universe?

Russell T Davies is not a creative man. Which also goes some way to explaining why the Shansheeth are yet another big earth animal (like the Judoon, Spiderwoman...er, conkers).

I was thinking mainly of of Jo's long list of protests. It was either a political sledgehammer or a real pisstake of her leaving story. And I don't think it was the latter.

Personally I thought it was there as a logical extension of her leaving story - certainly her husband in The Green Death seemed the kind of guy that would keep protesting.

Well that was a bit up and down. Loved the scene between Rani and her Dad, loved Sarah Jane's reaction to UNIT turning up, though it would be nice if she didn't hate them quite so much.

SJS and Jo meeting was well handled, although it really was difficult to reconcile Katy here with Jo Grant. I actually thought their reminices went on a little too long, but it was nice to see Pertwee and Baker.

Clyde...the guy's a legend, his banter with the Groske(?) was brilliant.

The bad. Was it just me, or did Tennant get more screen time than Smith?

The Shanshee; love the concept, and have no problem with them looking vulture like, but the realisation wasn't great. If they do appear in Who then some serious work needs to be done on the costumes.

Anyway, it was good but, like last year, it was just too long before the Doctor actually showed up!

Actually I'd agree, RTD isn't that inventive when it comes to coming up with character names. However I think in this instance we can cut him some slack given that Jo went off with Professor Jones at the end of The Green Death. She could have kept her own name I guess, that would have been the hippy thing to do, but on the whole it'd be more likely she'd take the name Jones.

And obviously RTD isn't responsible for Sarah Jane being a Smith, nor the fact that the Doctor often called himself John Smith.

Martha Jones and Micky Smith I'll give ya though!

So I wonder if I was the only one who teared up a bit when Jo first turned up (damn these allergies!). Say what you will about RTD, the man is a pro when it comes to writing characters. I think with a less skilled writer she'd have gotten annoying pretty fast. Can't say I'm a big fan of her 'career', but shes still a dear.
Hell, just about everyone seemed a lot more real than usual.

Sarah's UNIT hate didn't bother me that much. Especially since they turned up in her driveway with a squad of stormtroopers just to deliver a bloody funeral notice! Not to mention what they'd probably do to her and the kids if they got even a whiff of what she had in the attic. a good aggressive offense seemed the logical course of action.

I ended loving the Shanshee despite a bit of puppetishness. They were downright frightening in that last showdown with the Doctor. I honestly wouldn't mind seeing them again, although it would be nice if they all weren't totally evil, like they seem to have down with the Jadoon.

I had two problems with this. For one, I don't really see Jo Grant when I see Katy. Yeah, I've made cracks over her appearance but she seems much different all around. The other problem is unlike Sarah Jane she wasn't given a really sentimental reunion. Her reunion with the Doctor consists of him telling her that she looks like someone baked her! (unless I didn't hear that right)

Well, theres still part two. As has been said before about other stories, Part one was mostly set-up.

Plus 30+ years can change a person.

I have seen Part One. I have stronger feelings about this than I thought I would. Read on if you want to know them...

loved Sarah Jane's reaction to UNIT turning up, though it would be nice if she didn't hate them quite so much.

Yeah, that and Jo's Political Agenda really stood out as the normal RTD tropes. Yet, with Sarah, why the hell would she "hate" UNIT? This was just the organization that pretty much gave her access to what would become her life. UNIT protected her, and never did her wrong. Hell, it was inferred she even lived on the base. So, now it's the 21st century, and since RTD has a problem with "the military" all of his characters have to as well? Nonsense. That's why I always thought the 10th Doctor was a pompous moron for being so "I'm so righteous!"-gurning whenever they or any military were around. Pertwee had no problem living with UNIT. All the other Doctors consider the Brigadier their second-best friend and have aided UNIT hundreds of times.

So, given the entire history of the show, it's not unreasonable or unfair to point out that Russel needs to reign in his insta-depth political beliefs. I know he's pandering to a specific and favorite fanbase, but it's fucking childish and repetitive. Just like Jo and Santiago's listing of their "protests". Chaining themselves to things? Really? I remember Jo being dumb as a sack of bricks. But, I was hoping life had taught her some things. How can I possibly take her "life" seriously? What on earth has she actually accomplished other than to make herself feel better? If The Doctor doesn't tell her she's wasted her life on insignificant RTD-liberal-slanted protesting, then I'm simply going to regard her as the same paper-thin character she was back in the day. Meanwhile, RTD will have proven one final time that he lost all mojo by the end of Season Four of Who.

I actually thought their reminices went on a little too long, but it was nice to see Pertwee and Baker.
Agreed on all accounts.

Clyde...the guy's a legend, his banter with the Groske(?) was brilliant.
You know, another "inch" into Ten's "How Awesome Am I?" territory and I would hate Clyde. As it is, he's genuinely a great character in the hands of other writers.

The bad. Was it just me, or did Tennant get more screen time than Smith?
As usual, Russel and Co.'s "LOOK IT'S DAVID TENNANT!" mantra shined through clearly. I was just biding my time until we got past that over-dramatic emo.

Anyway, it was good but, like last year, it was just too long before the Doctor actually showed up!
It's RTD. Second verse, same as the first. :techman:

Agreed completely.

That's what I heard too...although in fairness she did say he looked like a baby first!

Well with UNIT I wouldn't say Pertwee and Baker were always 100% behind what they did, but they did see the value of them. That said modern UNIT seems a very different organisation, and seems to be portrayed a bit differently every time!

Thing is when Clyde gets into I'm awesome territory, it's pretty obviously a front--obviously Ten believed it :)

Yeah, fair point with Clyde. I guess I do like him, but when RTD writes him he can be a bit "too much", you know? And yes, I know we got the momentary "fall" at the end of Waters of Mars, but that never seemed to justify the years of building Ten up like a pompous, self-righteous crybaby.

Oh well. Enough about Ten. He's gone. Might as well just let it go and be happy Smith is around... :techman:

 Yeh sure.
Oh, well now you've posted a rolleyes smiley and a sarcastic agreement, you've clearly torn my statement to shreds.

Oh you!

Do you actually like Doctor Who? I've never got any sense of any enjoyment from any of your posts.
Yeah, I'm a Doctor Who fan. Doesn't mean I have to like that talentless hack RTD, his binman Doctor, his prancing tit Doctor, his fuckwitted chav love interest, his no-dimensional excuse for Catherine Tate to inflict her sketch show schtick on a wider audience, or his pathetic attempts at stories that are more about getting teenage girls to wet themselves over Tennant as he pulls out the crying towel than plot logic or satisfying storytelling.
