Saints Row: The Third

Yeah, SR 2 started with the prison escape mission, so there's still that element of linear intro then letting you loose on the new setting.

I guess I'm just getting old because I don't remember that at all. Yet I remember having a lot of fun with SR2.

FINALLY got around to picking this game up today. Installing it now as I type. Here's hoping for some crazy ass fun to come!

After an amazing intro (I don't care what gh4chiefs says, he can go make a waffle, that shit owned bones), it admittedly starts off a little slowly. But after maybe an hour or two, shit gets real, then it gets off the hook, and then it goes to HOLY FUCKING SHIT and never lets up.

What the fuck is that supposed to mean? That appears to be the second personal swipe now you've taken at me in the last few days. I'm not sure what i've done to you, but you knock it off any time now.

Jesus Goddamn Christ, stop being so sensitive. It was a reference to the cutscene on the plane, when Phillipe tells Gat that he's Belgian, not French, and Gat tells Phillipe to go make a waffle. And I know you heard that line, because you were complaining about the intro missions.

Also, "personal swipe?" Really? Me telling you to calm down in the NFL thread is a "swipe?"

Breathe, dude. :wtf:

I didn't appreciate you talking to me like a 3 year old. You tell 3 year olds to settle down, not a grown man. I'll flat GUARANTEE you that would not talk to me like that in person. And it's particularly insulting coming from some whose posts are quite often the very opposite of "settled down." "Fuck this gay earth" ring any bells with you? And I don't know WTF "shit owned bones" means but it doesn't sound like there's any good intent behind it.

You would think, as a moderator, you would have a little bit more respect for a fellow poster and a little more decorum. Why you felt a comment about a coach warranted you telling me what to do i don't know, but I didn't appreciate it then, I don't appreciate these comments. You want to disagree with me on something, well fine. But keep the personal comments to yourself.

So, in Saints Row: The Third news, I killed Professor Genki with a gigantic purple dildo, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

I've been considering getting this, but I've been reading a lot of complaints about it on other sites. A lot of people are saying that the city is boring, that there's less customisability than in SR2, and that a big chunk of the main missions are actually side missions in disguise. Overall, consensus seems to be that SR2 was better. Is this just a reaction to the hype or is it really a step down from the previous game?

SR1 was the first game I got with my 360 and I thought it was okay, but not great. I'm replaying it now for the first time in almost 5 years and I'm finding it to be much more fun this time even though it's fairly basic.

There are definitely some legitimate gripes. Shaundi feels like an entirely different character, which is really jarring. And the storyline feels half as long as it should. Act 1 is pretty heavily padded with side missions masquerading as storyline missions, but that goes away pretty quickly (thank God).

If I had to sum it up, the game doesn't feel complete -- that it's almost there, but it needed another six months in development. Example: There's a fully fleshed out train track system running throughout Steelport, but no trains.

Of course, I'm quite aware of the fact that THQ hasn't been doing particularly well lately (reported a $92 million loss for Q2 after losing $47 million in Q1), and if we didn't get Saints Row: The Third now, we probably never would have, but it definitely feels ... hollowed out. Most of the blame for this I lay squarely at the door of THQ, not Volition. There seems to have been quite a bit of mismanagement on THQ's part behind the scenes (development began in 2008, and the reveal of the game kept getting pushed back from 2009 to 2010 to March 2011), and from talking to some Volition developers on the Something Awful Forums, there's definitely a faint air of ... disgruntlement with THQ regarding some of the decision-making.

Now, that said, while there are definitely flaws in the game, but it's so much fun I almost don't care.

Kanye West's "Power" playing while I parachute into a Morningstar penthouse and shoot shit up? Awesome. "Holding Out for a Hero" during the finale? Awesome. Random wrestling references that ACTUALLY MAKE SENSE IN CONTEXT? Awesome.

Killing people by punching them in the groin? Awesome. Running up and dropkicking someone straight out of their car? Awesome. Running up and smashing someone's face into the pavement, then flashing some cocky pose? Awesome.

It's not a perfect game, but it's the most fun I've had with a game all year, even more than Arkham City (which I've played through twice). I'd still recommend it without reservation to anyone who likes sandbox games.

Man, I tried going back to Saints Row this past summer while I was trying to kill time after finishing Saints Row 2 again, and it was like going from a Ferrari to a Pinto.

After having put a few hours into the game I gotta say it's awesome! Somewhat saddened by the decreased ability to customize certain things. But I'll look past it cuz the game is just so fun. And as mentioned upthread.....That parachute mission onto the penthouse was awesome. Plus ya gotta love the in car banter.

Small tip:
After doing Kinzie's first cyber-trailblazer mission do the other 2 as well, you will get the best non-customizebla car and motorcycle of the game in your garage...

The step up from SR to SR2 was impressive, it was like going from GTA3 to San Andreas Plus in one jump. Even the tone of the games are different, with SR going for a serious (if cheesy) story while SR2 went completely crazy. It's not a jump that should be made in reverse.

But having not played SR2 since it was released, the original game isn't so bad. I think the reason it didn't work for me when I originally got it was that I was still adjusting to the 360 controller, so it was more difficult than it should have been. As a result, I stopped playing after the main story ended and missed out on a whole bunch of achievements. I reckon I could get 300 points out of doing all the side activities alone. Yes, I do care about that sort of thing. :alienblush:

Anyway, I think I'll just pick up SR2 again and replay that, I'll hold off on SR3 until the price comes down.

I'd have to say in general, video games are on a steep decline in terms of single player quality.

Developers are looking to cash in on the multiplayer aspect of games... which is great, unless you don't enjoy multiplayer and prefer local multiplayer (which is basically all but gone) and single player. I don't know where SR3 ranks (I haven't played any SR's yet, but what I've read over the past few months suggests SR2 is the best pick, including the third) but the last half dozen or so games I've gotten for the Xbox have been disappointing in terms of actual replay value.

Short single player campaigns that can be replayed a few times + multiplayer that gets real old, real quick.

(I do realize that the Saints Row series is among the few engaging sandbox-style games out now, just venting on the decline of quality of console gaming in general)

The last time I was super pumped on most of the games coming out was the mid 2000s.

This game is the best Single Player experience from all the games in the Fall rush. Some of the set pieces are just... well, insane.

Lookingglass - you can buy infinite ammo eventually... if you are having a problem, just play on Casual and grind out the respect points.

Just finished both the main story line final mission's and I gotta say I love this game. Only thing I really missed was having a certain homie blowing shit up at my side. Here's hoping they find some crazy way to bring him back (in living form). Maybe in some future DLC or maybe even Saint's The Fourth. Considering some of the crazy shit that went on in this game, I'm sure they could find some way to do it. Either way.....Bring on the Fourth!

I have about 23 hours into the game on my main character and have finished the story. I'm also doing two simultaneous playthroughs with separate friends on XBOX 360 and PC and am still loving every minute of it! Awesome game ...
