Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

(Lucasfilm used to have that exact job. I wanted to apply for it back in.. about 2004. I doubt my Star Wars and Indy was up to snuff though.)
They still have that job, the Lucasfilm Storygroup oversees all of the content to try to keep it all as consistent as possible, the members are Matt Martin, Pablo Hidalgo, and Emily Shkoukani. They're included in the credits of all of the comics.

Even Moffat had other people writing episodes.
And in 26 years of classic Who it managed fine without a One Man One Vision setup.

Gentle reminder that of the 8 episodes in Ncuti's second season, RTD wrote four of them. The Well was co-written with Sharma Angel-Walfall. Pete McTighe wrote Lucky Day, Inua Ellams wrote The Story & the Engine, and Juno Dawson wrote The Interstellar Song Contest.

Yes he wrote 6/8 episodes in the first Ncuti season, but there were still two episodes written by others.

And I'm sorry Classic Who never had a one man one vision set up? So we don't have a Hinchcliffe era, or a JNT era or...

unlese what if doctor who 2005 era goes back to the 1960s to 1980s verisons as in production goes old school style like the old days

cd and tape cassettes sound effects old school jim henson style puppets and anamotronics cast and crew wearing monster costumes and wearing makeups

We have the era’s and they have stylistic themes and what have you, but even within those we have say the Saward era and the Cartmel era, or Douglas Adams… it’s nowhere near similar, partially because of the way the modern show sets up its arcs. Saward is the only one who really comes close to forcing Who into *his* shape, and writing (or ghostwriting…) a few of the stories.

As to RTD and other writers, well, it’s all there in what you’re saying. Not only is he in overall control but also wrote half of the stories, and had a strong influence on at least one of the others. And Lucky Day must have been a bit of a shopping list story too, let’s be honest.
It’s also rather telling that Inua Ellams wrote a better Omega story than RTD, whilst still lifting from his own pre-existing work.

I wouldn’t necessarily describe recent Who as full auteur mode, but it’s increasingly obvious that no one was saying ‘how about not doing that?’ and a push to put it fully into auteur storytelling would be a catastrophic mistake.

to get high ratings again and record breaking award nominations at the uk tv awards plus to get all of the pure old school doctor who superfans happy again
I really enjoy old Doctor Who, but I don't want to go back to that era. While I personally don't mind the dated special effects and production style, it's not going to get high ratings and win awards today. Nostalgia does sell to a certain extent, but those old fans aren't going to be around forever. There's probably quite a number of them that are already gone. They need to move beyond that and just try to write interesting stories, and they'll gain new fans.

Love how you've gone from complaining he didn't let other writers write episodes at all to saying well he still wrote half of them.

And again not that unusual. Go back to Series 5 and Moffat wrote 6/13 so almost half, and as for shopping list episodes, again not unusual, that's what Victory of the Daleks was for Gatiss.

Careful you don't put your back out shifting those goalposts.

I didn’t go back on anything.
My comment always said that a push towards auteur would be a bad thing.
That someone not saying ‘no’ to some of RTDs excesses these last couple of seasons was a problem.
That we didn’t need a One Man One Vision approach.

I did not say we already had auteur/vision but that move towards it has been a mistake, and that moving even further in that direction would be a terrible idea. And yes it’s a trajectory that started under Moffat really, and has steadily got worse, and sometimes with worse results.

At no point did I *complain he didn’t let other writers write episodes at all*.

And Victory of the Daleks is really not an episode I am going out to bat for either — but then I am not playing Moff vs RTD. Just analysing what we have seen on screen of late.
