Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

And he asked him to write a specific story once; the opening two-parter for Series 9.

This was at the point when Jenna hadn't changed her mind about leaving yet and the new companion wouldn't have been introduced until Episode 3.

He did indeed. Moffat invited RTD back every season he was showrunner, RTD declined each time.

IIRC, both RTD and Moffat have admitted that coming back to write content for the Lockdown Bonus Material back in 2020 reignited their passion for writing Doctor Who.
Thank you for reaffirming my memory. I had forgotten about the Lockdown material and how that helped reignite their respective interests in the show.

Like I said, given enough time, I'm sure Chibnall will find himself back as well.

Oh, that's interesting, I hadn't heard about that specific instance.

As much as I love Jenna and Clara, I really do wish she hadn't changed her mind. "Last Christmas" was such a perfect ending for the character. That and I really wanted Shona as the new companion.

RTD did get to write for Eleven though with the SJA ep Death of the Doctor, so we can at least see how he would have approached the character.

New trailer tomorrow. If they have any sense they're release it at a sensible time for the UK.

I've just realised Disney have a clip of Ncuti hyping the trailer while the BBC just have a photo of him. You couldn't make it up.

Blimey; there's that Disney money in action.

Oh, and still not on the BBC YouTube Channel. Way to disabuse the notion that it's all for the Yanks benefit now, guys!

Edit: I hope that's a mistake on the upload and not the actual colour grade as all the colour has been drained out of it.

Is it just me, or does it seem as though this is the first Doctor since the relaunch that is unencumbered by the emotional trauma brought about by the Time War?
Edit to add.
I heard the word "Supernatural" in the trailer, which harks back to what RTD said in an interview about the Toymaker loosening the rules to allow supernatural elements to enter in to the universe.

"There's no such things as monsters, it's just creatures you haven't met yet."

Excellent trailer, although I do wish they used the original Bowie. I'm very curious to see how this butterfly effect that creates fantasy realities theme plays out.

This new, intriguing season cannot get here soon enough!

Well, that is the point of bi-generatuon.

Special relationship right there.

Still looks like a couple of people escaping from some really weird H+M photoshoots.

Eleven pretty much was, except for the odd bit and the anniversary. He was more haunted by Trenzalore… and of course Twelve and Thirteen were too. RTD had to mine the Chibnall Fracas for angst instead, TC, Flux… the whole ‘that’s alright then’ scene recontextualising all the companions post-Donna, even if they had already had the blows softened. (No companion save Martha voluntarily walked out the Tardis till Ryan and Graham. And arguably Martha was basically traumatised into it and didn’t exactly leave. To be fair, companions just hopping off to do something else or go home was becoming increasingly uncommon since the seventies.)

Random thoughts:

Lots of snow cropping up in different places (even indoors!); connected to the night baby Ruby is abandoned?

Kate talking (off-screen) about the world becoming more Supernatural, so still playing with that idea.

Tennant again, albeit as 10. I'm guessing it's Jonathan Groff's Time Agent character IDing the Doctor so we'll get a quick shot of everybody.

The episode with the overgrown TARDIS is the one they shot mostly without Ncuti while he finished Sex Education. I'm guessing the various shots of Ruby alone at home (and growing older) are from that one too.

Susan Twist's mystery character is the head of Big Bad Triad Technologies.

But I do have to protest that there's nowhere in London you can stand and see Big Ben, St Paul's and Tower Bridge at the same time.

Most of the comments I'm reading seem to be positive, a lot of them talking about the production values and not being bubble wrap and cardboard and all that. While that may not be totally fair especially with newer Who it shows there are people interested that weren't before.

It seems every negative comment mentions "woke" so you can give that the weight you feel it deserves. Either that or complaining about D+ not being the Beeb.

Loki should be able to control all these alternate timelines, right? Nine times out of ten. Well, seven times out of ten. Five times....

Dennis Moore. Dennis Moore. Riding through the night. Soon every lupin in the land will be in his mighty hand. He robs from the rich, and gives to the poor. Dennis Moore. Dennis Moore. Dennis Moore.
