Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Another new teaser with a lot of NPH and more hidden messages.

Backwards dialogue "What are you doing in everyone's head?"
New binary code "Long diamond. Short heart".

"Brooding eLiJah MCMXXVI" is an anagram I'm assuming, and the year translates to 1926 which matches up with some of the Toymaker scenes they shot.

Won't someone think of the cosplayers bank balances?

So Jonathan Groff isn't in the musical episode, though looks like he's back in his "Hamilton" days. Maybe there's something to those rumours of LMM being spotted in Cardiff after all...

Looks Regencyish. Well, the Jane Austen cosplayers will have a head start. Given the popularity of everything from Pride and Prejudice to the Horatio Hornblower series, it's always surprised me that Doctor Who hasn't done more in the Napoleonic/Regency eras. On TV there's "Thin Ice" and "The Haunting of Villa Deodati" and maybe some others I'm forgetting. The tie-ins have done a bit more with the period, but not a whole heck of a lot, considering how much pop culture is set around that time. Bridgerton, for example, which may be a bit of an influence here.

Russell teasing on Instagram.

A pototo... Sontarans? Has anyone seen Dan Starkey lately?

Or is Groff playing Mozart and it's a reference to Mozart potatoes? Certainly the right time period.

Damn it! Ncuti is one of those irritating people who'd look good wearing an old potato sack isn't he!

Is anyone else a little bothered that it doesn't look like he'll have a consistent outfit? Then again maybe Whittaker would have been more appreciated if she'd been able to change more often!

Seriously though, surely if for nothing beyond a marketing angle presumably he's going to have a default outfit that he wears in most episodes?

Russell really is a publicity generating machine. First get worldwide coverage by announcing Groff's casting, then hold off on in-character photos and get a second round a week later.

If the new series isn't successful it certainly won't be from lack of trying.

It’s bothering me a lot tbh, I think of it as intrinsic part of the character that there’s a layer of anachronism in the costume, that they don’t blend in per se, and that the moment you walk in on an episode it’s good to be able to see that it’s *different* and that *there* is the Doctor.
The only time the Doctor should dress for the era is if they pick up some form of disguise part way through, and on the very rare exception they *do* ‘dress for the ocassion’ it’s better if they maintain some level of their character in that.
I don’t even know why we’ve gone all ‘tuxedo or tails now and then’ since Ten(nant) either. That’s a Bond thing, different Time Lord franchise entirely.

^^^It could be that we might see him wear a few costumes as he tries to decide on one main out, instead of just the instant new outfit for a new doctor, a bit like Baker when he popped in and out of the tardis at his regen, but this time he keeps each on for a few episodes, might make a interesting new take on regeneration.

Ncuti is a man of fashion. He'd probably hate it if he was going to all these different time periods and relegated to his Doctor outfit vs dressing for the occasion. Hair and all.
