I wonder if people in the 1970s complained about Pertwee turning up in a different outfit every story?
Variations on a theme though. You get the same with Tom, to a lesser extent. Then again ever so slightly for the rest of the Classic Series. McCoy took a while in his first season to be settled by the designers. But they were all subtle changes. Capaldi went through a bunch too, but I consider that something of a weakness of his run tbh. (And like Tom before him, I don’t think much of Matt’s purple phase)
Back when Ecclestone was cast, and they went with the Leather Jacket, the costume designer talked about maintaining an overall Doctorish silhouette, which is in part what I am talking about.
I’ve said it elsewhere, but part of the nature of the character is that as s/he changes face and body, s/he tends to do the Einstein (may have been Turing) thing of sticking to one outfit/look. Aside from disguises, the most radical changes for a good ten to fifteen years were when Tom went purple and McCoy got a brown jacket. Pertwee changed a fair bit, yes, but he’s pretty consistent with his set-up when you look at it. It’s very rare you might look at a shot of Pertwee in another role, and mistake it for Who, and vice versa — you know when you are looking at him in Who. (Or in later years, when he dresses for interviews and goes back to the look)
More often than not, each Doctor has a ‘look’ that is somewhat immutable, and often echoes across incarnations. Usually something of the Edwardian fashion. (Jodie really should have had that look — it would have been *so much better* even if Missy had beat her to the punch a little.)
It is a very small concern of mine that they are ‘Bonding up slightly, because Ncuti is a handy clothes horse of an actor.
