Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

I feel Eddie Robson has the right of it: "Bearing in mind the cost of effects work was bumped up by Disney's requirement for it all to be done in 4k, whereas previously most episodes were made in 1080 HD, added to the general inflation of TV budgets across the board, that sounds more sensible to me."

Now that would make sense

Disney- Your cardiff CRT screens suck! What is that? A 2005 edition of photoshop? We're giving you money to upgrade your tech to look cool in 4K

And I think some of it did look cool the moment your saw "The Star Beast" things looked way better than "The Power of the Doctor"

Much like the change from "End of Time part 2" to "The Eleventh Hour" for the big HD conversion

Things didn't look so Soap Operay when RTD's ended. It stopped looking like East Enders

Doctor Who returns next Christmas

Pretty much as expected. Disney declines and the next new Who is December 2026. I'm sure the fact that they don't need to write long term contracts for a one off special with Piper made it easier to squeeze that one in. No rush to find the new Doctor and other long term cast.

While I suspect RTD will return for the following season, doing the one off special doesn't necessarily lock him in either.

I don't know. That just seems to be going backwards. Nothing against Piper. Same reason why I wouldn't want Tennant back for a season.

Going from the role of previous Companion to the role of The Doctor isn't even remotely the same thing as playing two different incarnations of The Doctor.

I'd like to see Piper get a full season in at least. She's got the part, may as well run with it.

If Billie wasn't already a Series Regular on Wednesday, I think the likelihood of her doing the role of The Doctor for a season would be much greater.

Apparently there are, shock, people of colour in Wales you know.

The way they go on about all sorts of things like that in some parts of wales, I had assumed they were one of those places where more than three people darker than catherine zeta jones would be assumed by some locals to be tourists or the vanguard of an invasion.

I’m *almost* curious enough to check the statistics, especially when taking into account how many people in general take work as extras.

On my few visits to wales thirty years ago, it did not strike me as diverse as home was. But to be fair, that wasnt Cardiff, and they hadn’t had their media makeover.

They do have lovely tap water in wales though.

Hard disagree. JMS as Doctor Who Showrunner would be the equivalent of Stephen King Showrunning an adaptation of The Dark Tower.
Not sold on this analogy. King's one foray into directing, Maximum Overdrive, was a huge failure, though that apparently had as much to do with his alcohol & drug intake at the time as anything, & the more recent Shining miniseries he spearheaded was apparently not that good, suggesting his visual storytelling skills aren't on par with his prose ones.

JMS, on the other hand, has a string of lauded TV shows & comic runs to back up his credentials in that department, & I for one will always wonder what might have been.

In terms of creative & critical success, though, the two are certainly in similar territory. They both really know how to spin an engrossing yarn, though I'd argue King doesn't always know when to stop.

JMS is aged 71, has never worked in British tv, most of his post-B5 tv shows failed to take off and his last one, Sense8, ended in 2018 after 24 episodes. The idea that he would be allowed to take over DW was as fantastical as anything in the last 2 seasons of the show itself.

You're either seriously ignorant of the width and breadth of JNS' works, or you're just trying to be a contrarian.

I picked Stephen King as my analogue because I thought I'd get crucified for picking my first choice, Neil Gaiman.
