I wonder how much that stupid new Tardis/warehouse cost...

I feel Eddie Robson has the right of it: "Bearing in mind the cost of effects work was bumped up by Disney's requirement for it all to be done in 4k, whereas previously most episodes were made in 1080 HD, added to the general inflation of TV budgets across the board, that sounds more sensible to me."

Today's Deadline article on the Who Disney deal gives a much lower figure (£6-8m per episode), which rather gives the impression yesterday's figure (£10m) was what we in the industry call "a guess". https://deadline.com/2025/10/why-disney-ditched-doctor-bbc-1236601181/bsky.app
Pretty much as expected. Disney declines and the next new Who is December 2026. I'm sure the fact that they don't need to write long term contracts for a one off special with Piper made it easier to squeeze that one in. No rush to find the new Doctor and other long term cast.Doctor Who returns next Christmas

BBC confirms future of Doctor Who and a new Christmas Special in 2026
Fans of the beloved series have much to enjoy ahead of the special, with The War Between the Land and the Sea and a new animation series for CBeebies, which is in developmentwww.bbc.co.uk
I don't know. That just seems to be going backwards. Nothing against Piper. Same reason why I wouldn't want Tennant back for a season.I'd like to see Piper get a full season in at least. She's got the part, may as well run with it.

Apparently there are, shock, people of colour in Wales you know.
Well, more like supporting cast.
I'm sure there are. But are there writer/producers willing to do it for the money the BBC is willing to offer, with the BBC's strings attached? That's a smaller pool.
Is it bigger in the inside?I wonder how much that stupid new Tardis/warehouse cost...
Bullet dodgedJ. Michael Straczynski wanted the job after Chibnall left, but RTD was their first (and only) choice.

Oh, did he write the novel Doctor Who is based on?Hard disagree. JMS as Doctor Who Showrunner would be the equivalent of Stephen King Showrunning an adaptation of The Dark Tower.

JMS is a Stephen King-level writer in terms of his career.
That's why it's equivalent.

Not sold on this analogy. King's one foray into directing, Maximum Overdrive, was a huge failure, though that apparently had as much to do with his alcohol & drug intake at the time as anything, & the more recent Shining miniseries he spearheaded was apparently not that good, suggesting his visual storytelling skills aren't on par with his prose ones.Hard disagree. JMS, on the other hand, has a string of lauded TV shows & comic runs to back up his credentials in that department, & I for one will always wonder what might have been.
In terms of creative & critical success, though, the two are certainly in similar territory. They both really know how to spin an engrossing yarn, though I'd argue King doesn't always know when to stop.
