Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watch?

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Dimesdan - it's the contradictions that make us interesting. Be pretty blooming boring if we all fitted into little boxes.

Oh I know, and I never said it was wrong, I just find it highly amusing.

Why is it amusing? People vest time in say a tv show. I like Dr. Who. Its one of my favorite shows on tv. Its probably in my top 5 favorite scifi shows. I have vested much time in it and want to watch new episodes whenever I can. Is it amusing because i am not British that I love Dr.Who? Of course not.

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

This was a topic of discussion on Sydney 702 talkback radio yesterday. It seemed to boil down to this (for the 35-55yo female demographic):
We watched his mother become a Princess, & the early fairytale which for some of us, coincided with our own weddings. The births of Princes William and Harry coincided with the births of our own children, the Divorce coincided with the divorces of others. Then the tragedy of the boys losing their Mum. The image of the simple rose wreath on her coffin with "Mummy" written on it is seared into my memory. It's a sort of "maternal" investment.

That sounds about right. For me, there's the added sentiment that I just consider him a decent person, who has found someone to love and who loves him, and I always want the best for such people.

Sounds about right to me, too, although with my birthday being just two months after William's, I'm interested from the viewpoint of a contemporary. Also, I have an interest in British history (an interest I share with my mother, so we're planning a Mommy and Me day on Friday  ) so of course I want to watch it being made.

Finally, I admit it. I'm good-naturedly jealous. I may be an American, but I still wanted to be a princess when I was little. ;)

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Why exactly do you feel the need to get up early, does this event hold any importance to you what so ever?

Same reason people get up early for a midnight showing of a new movie or a sports event in another county, she wants to watch it.

But it's just a wedding, if William wasn't going to be King one day and wasn't a member of the Royal Family, would she really want to watch it then?

Well, there are a number of reasons I want to watch:
1) I’m curious. People all around the world have been impacted by Britain and her culture. So it seems natural to be curious about the wedding.
2) I like traditions and traditional ceremonies. So that means I will enjoy seeing the men in their uniforms, the women in their dresses, etc.
3) I am a little older then Prince William. So I have grown up all my life hearing about him.
4) Like many Americans most of my ancestors are from England. I love genealogy and learning about my family history. That means I am interested in learning about the home country of my ancestors. And, like many many others, I am directly descended from British royalty (though it was hundreds of years ago via King Edward III). It may seem funny or petty to some, but I think it is interesting.
5) Yes, my country fought for Independence against England. Heck, I had relatives who fought against the British. I had other relatives that were still living in England at the time of the war. But that was hundreds of years ago (as was the War of 1812) so it is not as if I have some grudge against the British people. The British people are allies of America. So, I am happy for them and for the members of the royal family. I am happy for their future King and for their future Queen.
6) Disney has brain washed me into thinking that a wedding between a Prince and a Princess is important. LOL.
7) Because I just want to… do we really need any reason to be excited?

BTW, Jenna Bush Hager got married when her father George W. Bush was still President of the United States. If they would have televised that wedding (and especially if they would have had it in the White House) then I would have watched that too.
I haven't read all of this. I have to say I am highly amused by the completely superfluous, bracketed extra information in the title.

Hmmm… and to think I would have added more, but TrekBBS wouldn’t let me!

Personally I will be watching Channel 9 as Dame Edna will be one of the hosts and taping Channel 2 because the Chaser guys will be doing a comedy commentary. I normally cannot stand them but that should be funny!
Sadly the Chaser's version has been cancelled by the Queen. Now my plan will be Farscape DVDs, or something else. Don't really care now.

There was another thread on here mentioing the Chaser's version. What exactly is the Chaser's version?

Chaser is some not very funny person in Australia, from what I can glean in other parts of the board.

BBC America -- The network will air a commercial-free simulcast of what the BBC network in England will be showing. BONUS: Coverage starts at 3 a.m.
That is the real and most British way to watch it:o
I will maybe watch it..or at least parts of it:):D
Most likely via webcast from the BBC site.

He is going to be King some day. First the Queen (his grandmother) has to die, his father (Prince Charles) would then rise to the throne and will either turn it down, passing it on to Prince William, or take it then die at some point, elevating William.

In short-order William is second in line once his octogenarian grandmother dies, Charles himself is also in his 60s.

The Windors do seem to be long lived don't they?

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

The women especially - how old was the Queen Mum when she finally died?

EDIT: (after a quick visit to wiki) even older than I thought! She lived to 101!
