Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watch?

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Kate always seems happy whenever I see a pic of her. Diana, OTOH, always looked a little sad.

Well, Diana was a bit more "forced" into her marriage than Kate apparently is, Diana was married very young and pretty much kept in an ivory tower during her entire "reign" while her husband (Charles?) dicked with another woman.

No Diana wasn't forced into the marriage Charles was. That was the first step in its downfall. Diana was not kept in an ivory tower at all. She became immensely popular which was another thing Charles was not happy about.

I seem to recall the two not making many appearances together and it pretty much being suggested that it was a "relationship for show." But it all happened when I was in junior high school/high school and I didn't care about the Royals then and care even less now.

Charles & Diana did quite a few joint tours in the beginning eg the 1983 Australian Tour with baby William. It was then that Diana's "star" really started to rise and "eclipse" Charles' "star".

My main problem was, planning to get married in the next year or so after them, all wedding dress designers were infected by the "meringue" disease. Very hard to get sleek, elegant dresses in 1982.

It was hard to get any good-looking clothes in 1982.

I'll pipe in here...I'll probably watch the ceremony. Being British myself and being fascinated with the monarchy since I was small I'll check it out. Kate is stunning as Trekker pointed out.

I have been really interested in royalty since the late 70s so I do remember that Charles and Diana made regular appearances together even before they were married.

I, for one, will be watching, but only for the Liturgy. I'll be keeping a tally of everything His Grace, +Rowan, screws up, as well as box scores on the Warders, Virgers, other clergy, non-clergy, and musicians.

Does Rowan Williams often have a hard time with the liturgy?

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

I'll be watching. I might even be staying up all night to catch the "early" coverage starting at 2 AM in my time zone. I would have liked to be there in London, but it just wasn't in the cards for me.

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Because I live in England, I'm exposed to British traditions frequently, and I feel that makes it harder to see them from an international perspective. ie, it's harder to see how interesting are British traditions to people in other lands.

Apparently over one billion people are expected to be watching this wedding, so to those of you who are not British, but are interested in this wedding, can you explain what makes it so captivating? How does it compare with marriages within other royal families? Why is it more captivating than the traditions of any other foriegn nation?

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Not the least bit interested. I wish the new couple nothing but the best and the greatest happiness, but in this day and age, do we really want to see the over-the-top engrandizing of that class of individual when the rest of us are having a hard time just paying the bills? Do we really want to see such royal opulence in the face of a global economic melt-down? My forefathers engaged in this little revolution thing a couple-hundred years ago for the right not to care about royal weddings and the like. I understand the "fairytale" aspect of the event, but when the curtain is pulled aside, it really just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Just my 2 cents' worth. Agree or not - nothing personal - I just don't really care.

I don't actually know, but I am a member of Ship of Fools, and we tend to scrutinize everything for our own amusement.

I viewed Trinity Episcopal's (Wall Street, NYC -- National Treasure) Easter Sunday Mass online, and I was astounded at the number of clergy and non-clergy in the entrance procession and then in the Sanctuary. I could not fathom why two priests, two deacons, and about a dozen albed lay people were needed to celebrate Easter Sunday Mass, to say anything of having three virgers escort them in. I'm pretty high church, but even this was too much for me.

As the Royal Wedding will be on the world stage, I expect even more pomp and clerical silliness. Which Bishops will be vesting? Which will wear choir dress? Who will be wearing a Cope? Who won't? What will the clergy from other Christian denominations be wearing? What about the Rabbis and the Imam? Will Lord Andrew, Baron Lloyd-Webber write something new? How many virgers will be needed? Will they be escorting HRH Elizabeth II, or does she have someone else? How much bowing will go on between Dr. Williams and the virgers, the Rector and the virgers? Will the Cardinal Murphy-O'Connor know what to do when a virger bows to him and tries to herd him? What about the Orthodox Bishop on the guest list? Will he have to remove his crown-like mitre in honor HRH? Will he get to swing incense about and chant something? Does he get to wear his omorphon, or is that considered rude?

Oh, I JUST CAN'T WAIT! I hope there's plenty of smoke and silly vestments and bowing and virgers and wands and reverencing and hats and gold colored books and crowns and copes and confusion and bowing and processing and ..... YAY! Liturgical insanity! Yee-haw!

Isn't it what you display to announce that you wish to participate in jamaharon? In that case, he should wait at least after the buffet.

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Anyway it wouldn't be a matter of "gettin up early" for me - Sydney is 11 hours ahead of London, so it'll be 10pm Friday night. :)

Damn, I misspelled it. It's actually omophor, and it's scarf like vestment worn by Orthodox bishops as a sign of their bishoply power.

Not to be confused with the horgon, which, hopefully Prince William will have on display in the bedroom before he consummates his marriage to Kate.

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

I've already seen more than enough of it - endless ads and "we're all celebrating".

Fuck right off - two people wanna get married, that's great, best of luck to them, but I don't know them and they don't know me, so what the fuck am I celebrating, exactly? An extra bank holiday? No, I'm self-employed so bank holidays are days when I'm fucked cos the editors are off. A gap in the reality TV schedules perhaps?

I'll be out in the garden reading if it's good weather, and watching some DVDs of real programmes if not.

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Personally I will be watching Channel 9 as Dame Edna will be one of the hosts and taping Channel 2 because the Chaser guys will be doing a comedy commentary. I normally cannot stand them but that should be funny!
Sadly the Chaser's version has been cancelled by the Queen. Now my plan will be Farscape DVDs, or something else. Don't really care now.

Pretty much sums up my feelings. I simply don't understand why people care about royal weddings, celebrity weddings, etc, etc. Not being in Britain, I'm not swamped with it in the media but as Canada is part of the British Commonwealth, we get enough of it as it is.

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

I plan on being asleep until after it occurs. suffering a hang over and not caring one bit. Why the fuck does anyone actually care about this? You Americans do remember what you celebrate on the 4th of July, to get away from all this crap.

I'm jealous. Wish I didn't have to wake up so early!!

Why exactly do you feel the need to get up early, does this event hold any importance to you what so ever?
