Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watch?

Re: Royal Wedding (Prince William & Kate)- R U Waking Up Early to Watc

Anyway it wouldn't be a matter of "gettin up early" for me - Sydney is 11 hours ahead of London, so it'll be 10pm Friday night. :)

I'm jealous. Wish I didn't have to wake up so early!!

Why exactly do you feel the need to get up early, does this event hold any importance to you what so ever?

Same reason people get up early for a midnight showing of a new movie or a sports event in another county, she wants to watch it.

But it's just a wedding, if William wasn't going to be King one day and wasn't a member of the Royal Family, would she really want to watch it then?

I bet if they televised the weddings of more celebrities a lot of people would watch them - it's a bit like watching property shows really, I like to see other people's houses - at weddings you get to see everyone dressed up to the nines, it's fun.

Yep. Plus, after seeing him grow up, I'm more than a bit vested in William's future. He seems like a genuinely good person, and Kate seems like a genuinely good person, and so I want to see them happy. That said, I may watch a few minutes of it, but not the whole thing. 7 hours? Wow.

I haven't read all of this. I have to say I am highly amused by the completely superfluous, bracketed extra information in the title.

Like those in the Commonwealth countries need them :)

Being American you have no more vested in him than say, the Irish, the French or the Chinese. Hell, I don't even feel that I have anything "vested" in him and he will supposedly rule over me being British and all.

You Americans do remember what you celebrate on the 4th of July, to get away from all this crap.

I know perfectly well what I celebrate on the Fourth of July...and last I checked my freedom includes being able to watch whatever I want on TV.

Even better, you have the freedom to pick up the remote control, turn off/ignore the idiot box and go to the gym instead, read a book, work on your hobby...

Not really, there are still things you can not watch on TV, but, you know, you can keep on telling yourself that you can watch anything you so wish because that's one of your "freedoms."

What makes you think I don't go to the gym?

Oh, right. American = fat and lazy. Sorry, I forgot.

And I'll amend my statement to say that out of what's available on TV, I'm free to choose or not choose. And on that particular day I'll be choosing to watch an expensive spectacle that I'm not paying for. Thanks for the free entertainment! :bolian:

I was merely suggesting a better use of the time instead of watching the idiot box. Not happy with what they're showing, vote with your feet.

You realize, of course, there are many ways to be vested in someone, whether emotionally, physically, ideologically, socially; on so many different levels, that mere nationality doesn't even have to play into it at all.

Yes, two of those though are pretty creepy and one of them isn't very patriotic and one of them, you've not got a chance in hell of doing.

This was a topic of discussion on Sydney 702 talkback radio yesterday. It seemed to boil down to this (for the 35-55yo female demographic):
We watched his mother become a Princess, & the early fairytale which for some of us, coincided with our own weddings. The births of Princes William and Harry coincided with the births of our own children, the Divorce coincided with the divorces of others. Then the tragedy of the boys losing their Mum. The image of the simple rose wreath on her coffin with "Mummy" written on it is seared into my memory. It's a sort of "maternal" investment. ETA: Prince William recently toured Christchurch after the earthquake and the flood & cyclone devasted parts in Queensland. The public reaction was very positive and the most frequent comment was "Diana would be proud".

Then again William has been popular here since his parents brought him here on his first visit as a 9month old.

That's your opinion, and you're welcome to it, just don't pretend to speak for me when you say I'm not in any way invested just because I'm a U.S. citizen.

That sounds about right. For me, there's the added sentiment that I just consider him a decent person, who has found someone to love and who loves him, and I always want the best for such people.

I find it amusing that you feel you are invested in him because you are a US citizen.

If you were from one of the Commonwealth nations or one of the nations that left the Empire with in the last century, then I wouldn't, but because you're from a nation that celebrates each and every year your Independence, I find it amusing.

Dimesdan - it's the contradictions that make us interesting. Be pretty blooming boring if we all fitted into little boxes.

Oh I know, and I never said it was wrong, I just find it highly amusing.

Again, you're speaking for me, and this time as if I represent the entirety of my nation, which I do not. Perhaps you should stop assuming and actually read what I'm typing, please. There are reasons for which I am invested. I have explained them, and they have nothing to do with nationality.
