Rogue One (2016) [SW Anthology Series)

The description of how this movie plays out-notably that the use of the Force is virtually non-existent seems odd to me. I ain't Wars IMO without the Force - and just another space battle film.

It's akin IMO to having Star Trek without the existence or pre-existence of the Federation.

None of the quotes say that (well the ones I've seen) - they say

a) there is no Jedi
b) No magical warrior is coming to save you

which does not preclude either force users, Sith Lords or Vader (or even the emperor).

This quote implies at least to me that Force will be very minor part of the story. Isn't that like JK Rowling writing a Potter prequel with the magicians as a backstory to the Muggles - but still calling it a Wizard film?

Rogue One
Rogue One won't be a film about people with The Force or the Jedi in general, Edwards said. Instead "it comes down to a group of individuals who don't have magical powers that have to somehow bring hope to the galaxy." He showed off a brief teaser for the film, made with the cooperation of Industrial Light & Magic (the film hasn't started shooting yet). The teaser stars with Obi-Wan Kenobi's voice-over from the first Star Wars , talking about how the Jedi established peace in the galaxy "before the dark times, before the Empire." The camera tracks over a jungle valley as the voice-over continues. A lone TIE Fighter then soars overhead, heading towards the outline of what looks like a nearby moon... but is actually the Death Star..

So a decent chunk of Season 1 of TOS isn't Star Trek

Fair enough- the Potter example of Potter virtually w/o the wizards and more about the muggles s a better example. To further the analogy against this movie as described- it would be like the muggles on a quest to destory the wizard world and virtually not having them as a plot at all.

I dunno -we'll have to wait and see. Just seems odd for Star Wars to not have much about the jedi or the force as described.

I'm actually looking forward to a non-Jedi Star Wars film. Growing up, I loved the Han Solo trilogy, that kind of "little people" story approach appeals to me. Like Firefly. :)

Honestly thats like saying a movie about Klingons wouldnt be Star Trek...

You could make this a Vader film in which he hunts down and kills all of them one by one leaving the last one who manages to escape or get the plans away before they are killed - because part of the "there are no Jedi" might also be "there are no Jedi to save you from that Sith Lord in the black hat" though that might make it a little dark... but it would be a way to use one of the (if not) most popular characters in the franchise.

It would be interesting if Darth Vader simply permitted the spy to escape with the plans because he knew that they would lead him to more worthy targets, in this case Leia.

The SW universe is very large. It will still be completely Star Wars even without the force.

Considering the dearly lamented EU covered many aspects of the Star Wars universe, many which didn't involve Jedi, Sith or the Force, I'd say the majority of SW fandom disagrees with this assessment.

You are likely very correct. I however think there is a difference between those that have only watched the films versus those within the, fandom that have read the books and watched the films as well.

I suppose it's irrelevant - Disney could slap a star fleet uniform on a film labeled Star Wars and it likely would be an overwhelming success regardless.

ONe other thought about this film's plot. It occurs to me that the viewer knows the end story already. The people trying to steal the death star and/or it's plans will fail. We know this already because of the other Wars films.

Films where the viewer knows the ending of the story e.g. The Titanic work because of character development and often at least in Titanic's case a love story.

The writers will have to do some amazing character development IMO to make this work for the audience because we already know how it turns out - presumably badly for them.

Well if you want to split hairs, the force *is* still there, it just that there isn't anyone around in the movie who can consciously utilise it.

Which is fine by me. The EU contained many successful stories that did not include Force - users. I am sure the nuEU will be able to do the same.

No, they succeed in sending them to Leia..

That's right - it's the second death star where '.....lots of rebel fighters died ...' to send the plans. Nevertheless, we don't know their fate .... and .... we still know the outcome they successfully steal the plans.

Just sayin, when the viewer knows the outcome good storytelling will be required to engage the audience.

Just saw the teaser. From what I could see it looks pretty col. I'd love to see a higher quality version.

No, many Bothans died just to bring the information that Death Star II was being created and that the Emperor as overseeing the final stages of construction.. This has nothing to do with the plans
