I've been a bit of a Robin Hood scholar (nerd!), so I enjoyed a film that was a bit more serious and made at least a passing attempt to depict the feel of the times in a generally accurate manner.
The actual Robin Hood "myth" most are familiar with is passed over, and instead this one focuses on the changing times & attitudes that created the legend in the first place. I suppose this is a "how did it start" kind of film.
Good stuff here, I think. Not great, but a step above the other mindless crap around this summer.
I just watched this film for the first time. I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. The story held my interest and the production values are top notch. I think what keeps Robin Hood from being really good, is that it feels kind of by the numbers, and is not all that emotionally engaging.
I would give it a C+ letter grade. Worth the rental, but not a classic.
I want to Netflix it and give it another sampling. I only saw it once in theaters and felt very middling about it. Parts I liked or were indifferent to so maybe another viewing will help me decide if I'd like to own it. I'm fine with the liberties taken with the legend it just seemed to take forever for Robin and Marion to start falling for each other. It's got to be the only Robin story I've seen where I'd catagorize them as not being 'in love'. This movie has them falling in love and the movie is set up for a sequel that seems like it would be more based in the traditional legend. That is the movie I'd probably really enjoy. Thought Russell made a good Locksley.
I would have preferred to see the two unknown writers' script, with Nottingham and Robin reversed with a little mystery criminal investigation at hand. A little medieval spooky but family friendly perhaps like Sleepy Hollow. Someone new making something new in Hollywood. It's so novel it's scary!
Since they changed the movie so much by the time they released it as Robin Hood, do you suppose there's still a chance that we might see a new, separate production of Nottingham?
While it kinda lagged behind in the U.S. and was never able to surpass Iron Man 2, I think it did do pretty well overseas. I think a sequel on that basis is still a possibility. But I think it also comes down to what Ridley Scott's schedule looks like. I know there's also some talk of him directing 1 or 2 Alien prequels, but I also heard that those might be having script problems.
I really wanted to like Robin Hood. Unfortunately, I just think it's boring. It's such a serious, stately treatment. And it did seem like the actors were mumbling a lot of their lines, which didn't mix well with the sub-par sound system at the discount theater.
As for the other Robin Hoods out there:
I've never seen the Errol Flynn movie or the Sean Connery movie.
It's been ages since I've seen the Disney movie.
I only saw Prince of Thieves once. I didn't love it. I didn't hate it. I liked Alan Rickman as the bad guy, but I always love Alan Rickman as the bad guy. The 11th hour revelation that Robin & Will Scarlett are half-brothers was weird. Mostly, all I remember is being turned off by the childbirth scene. (I hate childbirth scenes!)
The only TV version I've seen was the 2nd season of the recent BBC series. I liked bits of that one. I'm lukewarm to Jonas Armstrong as Robin but I really like Much & Alan A-Dale. Keith Allen is a brilliantly vicious Sheriff. And call me crazy, but I was actually rooting for Marian to get together with Guy of Gisborne.
So you can imagine how pissed off I was when he killed her at the end of Season 2. I didn't buy it. And from the way Richard Armitage sounds in the bonus documentaries, it sounds like he didn't either.
BTW, I just realized something about the 3:10 to Yuma remake with Christian Bale & Russell Crowe. It's Batman & Robin!
I'm thinking of putting this DVD on my Christmas wish list. The family always wants a few $20 or less items.
Anyone gotten the DVD yet?
I only saw it once in the theater, maybe I'll Netflix it first before I decide on it as a keeper.
Despite my reservations about the film itself, I find something oddly hypnotic about the box art. I might have to pick up the DVD regardless. (Although, I wish I knew if the bonus features on the 2-disc version were any good.)
