I was hyped so much for this film for a long time and now I'm not after reading more about it.

I wish someone would do a proper Robin Hood movie, about as much as I wish someone would do a proper Arthur movie, but I digress.

Feel dirty saying it, but I think Kevin Costner did a pretty good Robin Hood movie, and I'm not really feeling the need for another one right now. Certainly not with the previews making it look more like a Braveheart sequel...

I had passes to go to a sneak screener last night but opted to make $123 in 3hrs so I gave my pass to a friend.
She liked it with the caveat that it lacked some of the narrative that Prince of Thieves had. That's right the love story was more fleshed out in Prince than Hood. Still it was a good action flick she said and will go with me again this weekend.

This should have been Nottingham instead of just another Robin Hood movie. It doesn't look all that spectacular and I don't think it'll supplant Prince of Thieves.

The lead singer of one of my favourite bands, Great Big Sea, is in it as Allan A'Dayle. Looking forward to seeing it this weekend. One thing to note is that's supposed to be an origin story; of how he became Robin Hood instead of the usual Robin Hood stories.

Prince of Thieves was an origin story, what theatrical take has there been since that? The usual stories Hollywood made about Robin Hood haven't been made in generations so today's moviegoer has little reference for Robin Hood outside Prince or godforbid Men in Tights. The masses in America are unaware of the BBC series, which I don't know how they approach the legend. Still, there isn't much for American general audiences to compare this to but Prince of Thieves, which also was an origin story of when he came home from the Crusades.

I've only seen the trailer recently but the scene with the D-Day landing boats and lowering ramps had my friends and me in stitches

Roger Ebert gave it 2 out of 4 stars, because he thinks of Errol Flynn swashbuckling when it comes to Robin Hood and was disappointed this movie wasn't like that.

Sorry, Roger but this is yet again a reason not to listen to critics. I respect how long you've been around but if your going to pull out Errol Flynn as your comparison I can't take you serious.

He has to know the audiences today in large part don't know Flynn, so to use that as your measuring stick is unfair. It'd be like saying RDJ isn't Basil Rathbone so the new Holmes movie doesn't measure up. Basil who?

^ Interesting RT rating from 69% when I was writing this thread yesterday to 53 earlier this evening. Generally with reviews after I see a film. Some have been positive, while others not so.

Anyways saw Robin Hood earlier in the day. How was it? I enjoyed it and looking for to a potential sequel.

Wow. Robin Hood Begins. A little Braveheart, a little Gladiator, a little Batman Begins, a weird take on the Normandy landing and a whole lot of middle aged people talking about freedom and liberty. Dull and set up for a franchise...that will never happen.

I haven't seen this, and I'm not really interested. I'm just too tired of the Gladiator 2 Ridley and Russell love vibe to care about a character that I've been reading and watching for twenty years.

The only thing wrong with Prince of Thieves is Costner, which is a weird thing to say since he's the star, but this was has had so many changes and recasts and Braveheartness that I'm just don't care. I also think its kind of pathetic that the History Channel ran a two hour 'documentary' about Robin Hood, the expert on camera being Russell Crowe, and this unbiased impartial look was written and director by Scott. Snark.

I like Errol Flynn's version, as well as Disney's. If you were going to have older Australians Crowe and Blanchett, they should have made an elderly version like Robin and Marian. I'm tired or origins, 'the story behind the legend that goes behind the myth and reveals the true story hidden beyond the bullshit'. Origins are not original. Why not make a Robin story that's actualyl displaced to the Crusade in which he fought?

Eh, Bean should have been Nottingham anyway. ;0)

I am a fairly big fan of the Robin Hood myth, and I am usually up for any new take on Robin Hood (unlike King Arthur, there really isn't a "definitive" version of the Robin Hood story in terms of original texts).

However, for the life of me, I simply can't get excited about this one, and I honestly cannot pinpoint why.
