Roberto Orci want both Shatner and Nimoy in Star Trek 3

How did Shatner's possible involvement leak this early?

Is it just me or does it seem a little fishy that Shatner's possible involvement has leaked this early in the production?

Who would have access to the script at this point? It isn't like they have started filming and there are a lot if people involved. I can understand leaks coming from Episode 7's production as there are many people involved with the film at this point, but how many people would know of ST 3's specific scenes?

Is it possible this leak (I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist) was intentionally planted to test the waters or gain publicity? If that's the case it has worked. Just Google Shatner + Nimoy ST3. Or did someone at the studio somehow get their hands on the script?

Probably just someone guessing based on the fact the film is being released during the original series 50th anniversary. Orci really had no choice but to say 'no comment'. If he says Shatner isn't involved and he is, the fan base will scream how he's a liar. If he says Shatner is involved and he isn't for some reason, the fan base will scream how he's a liar.

I don't believe there was any leak. Someone just got lucky.

Re: How did Shatner's possible involvement leak this early?

I bet it's been thrown out there on purpose to gauge fan reaction and convince whoever needs convincing. Bill Shatner has made a joke routine out of this for two films running. Every time he's done a talk show, or an interview it's come up. In reality he probably never particularly wanted in. It seems obvious that he won't do a cameo or any role where the story can work just fine without him.

So on that basis, maybe what's been scripted uses Shatner like Nimoy was in 2008 and they need help from the fanbase to sway him. Otherwise, they're back to the drawing board on the story idea.

Cancel my previous supposition then, if that's the case then. I'm sure it would've originated from somebody more pro NuTrek. Because it'd get reported both sides of the debate either way. But ultimately end up disregarded, once it's clearly proved to somebody who voiced strong criticism. There'd have to be a reading between the lines, of an agenda from somebody other than who wrote such an article.

Devin Faraci is generally pretty reliable, that said someone had to give him the information. I believe in this case where there is smoke there is fire + that Shatner will return as Kirk.

It could've leaked this early because it's not true and someone is just screwing around?

It's almost a standing joke to have rumors that Shatner will be in the "next" (whichever "the next" is) movie or episode of Trek.

Of course instead, we end up hearing all these stories later about how negotiations broke down (as in Shatner wanted too much money) or that Shatner doesn't do cameos.

I'll take everyone on this board out for a drink if Shatner is in the movie. I'll throw in dinner, too if he plays Kirk.

Orci probably doesn't give a crap whether the fans think he's a liar or not, nor should he. And as for "no comment?" Well, why not? As someone else here said, why not ruffle up the fandom feathers with baseless speculation? It'll only help the interest in in the next film whether Shatner's in it or not.

Given the backlash Abrams had to endure over Khan and the coverup in ID, I think that Orci playing it safe is a smart move. Discretion is always a safe bet, mostly because Trek fans are known to ruffle feathers regardless of the news.

No comment may be the most ruffling comment because you can't confirm or deny anything, so speculation goes amok.

Kill two birds with one stone: no one can call you a liar and you get to watch the fan base chase its collective tail for the next six-to-eight months.

You don't need to Google. There's already an active thread about this here in the forum, so why don't I just move your thread on over there?

Buckle up!

What backlash was that, exactly?

Backlash :guffaw:

I love how the minorty opinion suddenly becomes fact.

Its hard to describe a backlash but I could say maybe there was. remember that awful poll of Into Darkness voted as the worst trek film. Apparently only 100 people:lol: or so took the poll test but the story spread like wildfire that even major entertainment sites like hollywood.com and Access Hollywood ran the story.

Calling the "backlash" against the Khan cover-up a "minority opinion" is overstating its significance, I think. "Outlier opinion" is surely more accurate.

Although it generated some buzz in esoteric fan circles such as ours, I don't believe it was a real backlash anyway, because it didn't affect the bottom line. Anybody who says they boycotted STID over that most likely wasn't going to see it anyway, and we can see how massive a dent they put in ticket sales.
