The same writers who blew up Vulcan?![]()
"This was the gutsiest thing that we did. Blowing up Vulcan was nothing compared to saying, 'Spock and Uhura are in love with each other and having this incredibly intimate relationship.'" - DVD commentary
That would be very interesting and take advantage of the potential that the alternate reality provides. Why not talk about them having a child, with Spock feeling more impetus due to the loss of Vulcan, and the population of Vulcan needing help.
Even Spock Prime could be in there, discussing his regret over not being a parent, or a discussion along those lines. You can address the emotions that nuSpock feels, the regret, the worry, and the like over feeling like he needs to have a child, yet feels a duty towards Starfleet. Uhura can likewise look at the long term implications of their goals, and their relationships.
Yeah, I can see this working out very well in the trilogy's arc![]()
The fun should precisely be exploring the differences and what ifs
and for Spock who is the most complex, it would be more poignant because on one hand, you have the young one living his conflicts and insecurities (due to his relationship with Sarek and the way he was treated since he was a kid, he'd be scared that his kid would have to face the same) on the other hand there is Spock prime who has regrets and has to see another version of himself get what he never got and he doesn't want to interfere but he doesn't want this Spock to suffer like him.
For Uhura it would also be a way for the character to have something she wanted in TOS too but circumstances didn't make it so for her. It was written in biographies that tos Uhura loved her job and was happy about her career but she regretted the fact she didn't allow herself to have a relationship and start a family, especially when she saw that other officers managed to have both a career and personal life and didn't have to make a choice.
But I have a feeling the writers will never use this potential, they a bit want to have the cake and eat it too with the alt reality.
Now with these rumors about cameos of Shatner and Nimoy, combined with them using khan in stid, I have a feeling the third movie will be another wasted opportunity.
It's a pity because after the destruction of vulcan they could have created SO MANY new stories using the repercussions of what happened to the vulcans as a catalyst, they really didn't need to use old stories.
The problem is, also, that as much as the reboot has two protagonists, Kirk is still developed as the only protagonist. All the attention Spock got in the first movie was an exception but not the rule. There was an article about that and the fact that the writers refuse to admit that perhaps Spock should be the hero of this trilogy because he provides more potential for new stories.
There is also Orci now saying that the characters will be closer to tos, this doesn't make me so hopeful to see new stories and them being 'bold' with the characters.
This Spock (and the rest of the characters) will never be like the TOS one and Orci is the one that showed us WHY. The death of his mother and destroying vulcan as well as the talk he had with Sarek had destroyed, also, one of the main issues tos Spock had. That was his wrong perception of the vulcans and his belief that his feelings were entirely a human weakness. This Spock has his father telling him the truth and that he doesn't have to try to be like him (a vulcan and unfeeling) because he already is (sarek's a vulcan and he admits he has feelings too) it resolved something fundamental for the character.
Furthermore, the death of his mother might make him all more defensive about his human side because it's everything he has left of her now.
He has his own integrity as a character to respect now.
Making him too much like TOS Spock now would reduce him to a caricature.
Keep their spirit and some similarities but also don't hand wave away that your characters are facing circumstances that the previous version never did.
It is always a risky thing to take two characters from a franchise and put them in a romantic relationship that wasn't present in the original material. I think that Spock and Uhura was done well in 09 and ID and would like to see that relationship continue on.
I understand that Khan was a large nod towards the TOS plotline, but that doesn't mean the writers are steering towards repeating everything. Partially because Khan was Lindelof's idea, partially because Khan was still different from TOS to a degree and partially because I think the larger character arcs will play out in an interesting way, with both Spock and Kirk stepping in to more mature shoes.
If that involves Uhura getting pregnant, then great. I'm sure it won't be a huge plot line in the film, but the aspects of their relationship receiving more life is always interesting to me. Nice to have their characters fleshed out

Also, as much as the films have focused on Kirk and his growing in to a mature leader, there has been a maturation and growing process for Spock as well. I think Kirk's is being more of a mature leader, while Spock's is allowing the emotions he feels inside him to be expressed in a healthy way.
