RIP Walter Koenig

It's making me sad realizing that both actors who played Chekov are gone, and one far too soon.
Ones last act as a Star Trek actor was an homage to the other which will forever be a beautiful memory.

As sad as death always is a man of 90 dying relatively free of pain or dementia is a day for celebrating life more than mourning death.

I had read his autobiography years ago. One of the best and funniest I've ever read.

Strange, Walter Koenig's most famous role was Pavel Chekov, my favorite role he has ever done was Alfred Bester.

RIP, Mr. Koenig.

Rest in peace, Walter. Thank you for Chekov and Bester.

Here's George Takei's tribute (shared with a recent photo of the two of them):

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.

Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Just last month, on Sept. 14, he turned 90, on the same day Brad and I celebrated our 18th wedding anniversary. I will always treasure that he and I shared that date.

Walter was more than Chekov. He was a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend. To the fans who loved him for so many years, thank you. He loved you too.Rest well, my dear friend. Keep navigating a steady course.

– George

During Star Trek: Picard, we had characters from DS9 and VOY appear on the show. I had hoped before the show ended for a TOS character to appear on PIC. The series finale kind of sort of gave me that.

Walter Koenig did a voice-only appearance as President Chekov. Not the helmsman Chekov from TOS but I think his son. I was happy we at least got that.

Am I correct in assuming this was Koenig's last ever Star Trek gig?

My heart is heavy. I never got the honor of meeting him but I wish I did. Still, thanks for being a part of such a legacy, Walter.

Just found out today, and am said; met him twice at two fan-run conventions here in Toronto, (Toronto Trek in 1995/96 where he appeared alongside Michael Dorn, and at a late '90's con); he was a great guy and a fine gentleman to meet and hear from. Was glad to see that he met Anton Yelchin on the set of the 2009 movie, and that he got to act alongside the actor playing him as a young man, Andy Bray, in the fan production Star Trek: New Voyages/Star Trek: Phase II (the episode 'To Serve All Of My Days'):

I believe it was his last.. I wished they would had offered Walter an actual onscreen role where he was sitting as the president but as a 160 year old Pavel Chekov. That would have been a great topper for the character. Another missed opportunity. ☹️

Koenig is totally getting snubbed from next year's Oscars in memoriam, isn't he? They showed Nimoy and Nichols, but they snubbed Kelley (who had a long movie career before Star Trek!) and Doohan.

The Emmys in memoriam remembered them all though.

Damn, another legend gone. I’ve always loved Chekov and been very fond of Walter Koenig. We know that the day will come when we have to say goodbye to the legends who have meant so much to us, but that knowledge never makes it any easier when it eventually happens.

May he rest in peace. He will never be forgotten. :(
